Understanding Yaqui Worlds

Cócorit | Mexico
About
What is this?
This immersive cultural experience begins with private pickup from your accommodation in Hermosillo and a scenic two-hour drive to Cócorit. Along the way, your bilingual hosts introduce you to the cultural and historical landscape of Sonora, setting the stage for a deeper connection to the Yaqui world.
Your first stop is the Museo del Yaqui, where interactive exhibits explore key aspects of Yaqui identity—cosmovision, ethnobotany, traditional medicine, and their resistance to colonization. Central to Yaqui belief is the concept of aniam: multiple interconnected worlds where ancestors, spirits, and nature coexist. The museum grounds this cosmology in artifacts, stories, and modern-day relevance.
Following the exhibit, you'll engage in conversation with knowledgeable local guides who help bridge tradition and present-day life. This stage lays the foundation for understanding Yaqui culture as a living, evolving worldview.
What makes this unique?
Most visitors to Sonora never encounter Yaqui history beyond a museum label or textbook. This experience changes that. You’ll explore the Museo del Yaqui through the lens of hosts deeply connected to its cultural roots. The concept of cosmovisión is explored not just academically, but spiritually and socially—revealing how it continues to guide the Yaqui relationship to land, ancestry, and everyday life. This belief system, blending traditional Yaqui spirituality with Catholic elements, centers on interconnected worlds and a reverence for nature and ancestors.
This tour is a dialogue. It invites questions, reflection, and a deeper understanding of how colonial history, Indigenous resilience, and spiritual continuity intertwine. The inclusion of local voices—both as educators and conversation partners—ensures respectful, place-based engagement and sets the tone for the journey ahead.
