A short guided hike of roughly two hours will take you to a series of caves featuring rustic paintings and traces of human habitation dating back over 10,000 years. They depict the early domestication period of the Zapotec people, when their ancestors first settled here as hunter-gatherers. These caverns are part of a larger network of over 200 caves in Yagul, where the earliest remnants of domesticated corn—a tiny and now obsolete variety known as teocintle—were discovered. This entire area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

As these caves are protected and the town operates under Indigenous law, it’s required that we travel with a local guide provided by the pueblo’s government office.

After the hike, we’ll continue the corn theme with lunch at a local restaurant, sampling one of the most iconic corn-based dishes in Oaxaca: the tlayuda. We’ll share a variety of styles, along with a refreshing non-alcoholic agua fresca.

This hike is a chance to appreciate the splendor of the Oaxacan countryside and gain insight into the earliest Zapotec people who settled in this land. Your host, a long-time Oaxaca resident with strong connections to this community, will arrange the hike with a guide from the local government office to ensure the experience complies with Indigenous law for this protected area. You’ll then explore the magic of corn firsthand by trying one of Oaxaca’s most iconic delicacies—the tlayuda. Hike Through Corn's Origins

What’s Included: A guided medium-level hike with a tour of the caves and their paintings, along with full context about the culture, sites and surrounding region. We recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable shoes. Flip-flops and sandals are not advised to avoid potential injury. Julio will weave you around the artisan village and introduce you to craftspeople who will share their work and stories. As this is an opportune moment to pick up souvenirs, it is advisable to carry cash (Chilean pesos).

Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Mount Vesuvius Crater Hike

Joshua Tree National Park | United States

Forty-five minutes from Palm Springs – or a slightly longer, two hours from Los Angeles - in California’s southernmost Joshua Tree National Park, I’m waiting at the Visitor Center to buy my park pass, and it’s clear that the most commonly asked question of the rangers in this Park is - “Why is it called a Joshua Tree?"

Turns out the giant, branching yucca’s shape reminded early Mormon settlers of a story in which the Prophet Joshua reaches his hands up to the sky. “A good Joshua Tree will be really thick, with arms sticking out like they’re wearing furry sleeves.” – From The Bulletin, in a 1987 article, 7 years before the trees got themselves their own National Park. 

No two Joshua Trees are alike – for that would be too boring. Instead, they defiantly withstand the desert conditions and stretch out in weird and wonderful ways.

Portugal’s Évora Historic Center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most beautifully preserved medieval towns in Europe. Located in the Alentejo region, Évora is a treasure trove of Roman ruins, Gothic churches, whitewashed houses, and charming cobblestone streets. Once a royal residence and an important academic hub, the city’s blend of Roman, Moorish, and Portuguese influences makes it a must-visit for history lovers and photographers.


1. Roman Temple of Évora (Temple of Diana) – One of the best-preserved Roman temples in the Iberian Peninsula, dating back to the 1st century AD.

2. Évora Cathedral (Sé de Évora) – A massive Gothic cathedral offering stunning panoramic views from its rooftop.

Évora Historic Center

Initially a medieval fortress, it now boasts the Renaissance grandeur of the Salone dei Cinquecento. A living testament to the city's political, artistic, and architectural evolution. Top reasons to visit:
1- The construction of Palazzo Vecchio, attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, began in 1299. Built over the ruins of the Uberti Ghibelline towers and atop a Roman theater, the palace exemplifies the triumph of the Guelph faction. It has served as the seat of the city council, composed of the Guilds of Florence, and even housed Duke Walter VI of Brienne. The architectural design, initially severe and medieval, concealed sumptuous halls and residential apartments​​.
2 - Created during the Republic of Fra' Girolamo Savonarola in 1494, the Salone dei Cinquecento is the most significant room in Palazzo Vecchio. Originally basic and almost devoid of decoration, it was later chosen by Piero Soderini for grand murals by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, depicting the Republic's victories. Although these works were never completed, their initiation marked a high point in Renaissance art. When the Medici returned to power in 1540, they transformed the Salone into a symbol of ducal authority. Giorgio Vasari was tasked with its renovation, elevating the ceiling and adding a coffered structure with forty-two panels. The room's decor glorified the Medici family, replacing the original allegory of Florence with a depiction of Duke Cosimo himself​​​​​​.
Palazzo Vecchio, located at Piazza della Signoria, Florence, is open to the public as a museum. It offers various guided tours, some specifically tailored for families with children. The mezzanine level houses the Loeser Collection, and the second floor features private apartments and chambers, including the original Hall of Priors and the Hall of Maps. Chile’s Tara Salt Flats (Salar de Tara), located in the Atacama Desert, is a breathtaking, otherworldly landscape of vast white salt plains, towering rock formations, and flamingo-filled lagoons. Situated at an altitude of over 4,300 meters (14,100 feet), this remote destination offers breathtaking panoramic views, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers. The journey to Salar de Tara, through volcanic plains and surreal rock formations, is just as spectacular as the destination itself.


1. Expansive salt plains, stretching endlessly beneath the deep blue sky, create a dramatic and surreal contrast for photography.

2. The Monks of the Pacana (Los Monjes de la Pacana)—towering volcanic rock formations sculpted by erosion—resemble silent guardians in the desert.

3. Lagunas filled with flamingos, where Andean, James, and Chilean flamingos wade through shallow waters, offering incredible wildlife photography opportunities.

Tara Salt Flats

Faroe Islands

Getting there on a little ferry tossed around on the surging Atlantic Ocean needs courage. As the boat uses all her resources to maneuver into a tight, rocky harbor, I wonder if the captain, who does this twice a day, is either extremely brave or completely suicidal. We step on to what looks like the sets of a Disney fantasy movie. Twenty colorful grass-roofed homes, one little schoolhouse - which has one child - and a bridge over the Atlantic.

I meet my guide Harald - a septuagenarian with poise to rival the curious sheep we see hanging precariously over the cliffs. Harald leads our little group on a 4-hour hike across the island to the lighthouse at the westernmost point of the Faroes.

Birds are everywhere - puffins, fulmars, kittiwakes, gannets - on the green hills, riding the ocean waves, occupying every inch of cliff space, filling the air with their calls, and circling the sky.
