Holy Week in Málaga is one of the city’s most revered traditions. Each year, the streets become a living stage for devotion, history and collective memory. Over the course of the week, approximately 45 formal processions organized by over forty brotherhoods (cofradías) move through Málaga’s historic center, carrying lifelike wooden sculptures of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

Semana Santa in Málaga is distinguished by the scale of its processions through the city’s narrow streets. Here, the floats—known locally as tronos—are monumental platforms bearing sculpted scenes of the Passion of Jesus Christ and images of the Virgin Mary. The tradition of carrying tronos in Málaga spans centuries. These tronos are carried by teams of hombres de trono, men who undergo extensive training to bear extraordinary weight.

From a private balcony on Calle Larios, guests witness the physical and emotional intensity of the procession at close range: the synchronized movement of the hombres de trono, the cadence of drums, and the slow advance shaped by discipline and faith. Come and experience what happens in Buenos Aires after hours in a two-hour milonga experience hosted by a professional and globally renowned tango artist. Blending music, dance, social interaction, and traditions, milongas are deeply embedded in modern Porteño culture. The term refers to both the concept and the venue, with milongas typically being held in dance halls and cultural centers. For locals, the milonga represents community whereas for visitors, it’s an immersive cultural experience.

In this experience, Gisela will explain the cultural history of tango and what the dance means in modern Buenos Aires and wider Argentina. She will explain the etiquette and codes of the dance floor and terminology relating to tango—such as Ronda, Tanda, and Cabeceo. There is the opportunity to dance tango if you wish; however, this is optional. You are welcome to simply spectate and soak up the atmosphere from the sidelines. The experience also includes sharing wine and empanadas with Gisela.

Although both experiences are pivotal to the full Buenos Aires experience, milongas are far more intimate and authentic in comparison to watching a tango show. These are social and participatory affairs where regular people go to dance with friends and family. Some dancers are professional, others are just starting out with the steps or seeking to improve. Ultimately, the milonga stands for community and nurturing connection. There are no choreographed routines here, although you may well rub shoulders with professionals indulging in a relaxed night away from the theater!

Milongas are the realm of local residents. However, tourists are welcome to join in and engage with the attendees, many of whom are regulars. Growing up in Buenos Aires, Gisela Vidal danced her first tango at the age of 14. From there, she trained extensively in Tango Salon and Tango Stage style with the finest Argentinian Masters. Besides tango, Gisela has studied contemporary dance, jazz, belly dance, ballet, Argentine folk, and salsa. She has undertaken further tuition in theater and film acting, mime and clown art, and singing.

Gisela has participated in international tango festivals and major events including the opening of the Dakar 2009 in Buenos Aires. She was the choreographer and a stunt dancer for the Tango Infedele Video Clip. During her 20-year career, Gisela has danced and coached in over 40 countries. She co-managed a tango school in Milan and coordinated the Tango Querido School in Tuscany. She launched her own jewelry business in 2018.

This full-day outing from Santiago takes you to the coastal city of Valparaíso, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique topography, cultural diversity, and layered architectural heritage. Hosted by a professional architect, you will be shown around the colorful Cerro Concepción and Cerro Alegre, visiting such emblematic viewpoints as Paseo Gervasoni, Paseo Atkinson, and Paseo Yugoslavo. Diego Baloian is an architect holding a degree from the Universidad Finis Terrae and a Master's in Cultural Heritage from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). As the founding partner at DBG Architecture and Massantiago, his work focuses on architectural design, the restoration of heritage buildings, and urban planning. He has led and participated in projects and seminars in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, and Hungary. 

Diego has also organized conferences and exhibitions on Latin American architecture in collaboration with Guiding Architects Network, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH). Originally from Minnesota, multimedia artist Shannon McEvoy studied in Viña del Mar in 2010. The country and its people left a lasting impression on her, and she quickly returned after graduation. Inspired by the street art of Valparaíso, she incorporated Chilean muralism into her undergraduate Honors Thesis and later became a muralist herself.

Shannon has lived in Chile for over 10 years, where she teaches English and creates murals—though her talents extend far beyond. She also paints, sketches, makes ceramics and jewelry, designs her own clothes, and experiments with photography. As an artistic director, she has overseen several monumental public art installations in Santiago and beyond.

Passionate about both art and language, Shannon sees them as powerful tools for self-expression and meaningful connection. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she also speaks basic Portuguese.

Venice’s history is inseparable from its bond with the water that surrounds it. This experience begins where the lagoon meets the entrance of the Grand Canal, reading the skyline of San Giorgio and Punta della Dogana as a way into the city’s past.

The navigation continues around Punta della Dogana and the Basilica della Salute, following lines that reveal stories of commerce, devotion and resilience. From here the route moves toward islands that marked important moments in the life of the Republic. San Lazzaro highlights its Armenian heritage, while Lazzaretto Nuovo, once part of the city’s quarantine system, recalls the measures that protected the Republic.

The passage through the Arsenale opens a view of Venice as a maritime power, with basins and gateways that still convey its scale. The loop around San Michele, Venice’s cemetery island, brings a different register, with its walls and cypress trees marking the city’s relationship with memory before returning toward San Marco.

Understanding Venice through its waterline gives access to the forces that defined the city across politics, health, faith and maritime power. The lagoon becomes a guide rather than a backdrop, revealing how each island contributed to the survival and ambition of the Republic. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Eclairs, ratatouille, fromage – mhmm, so yummy – paired with a glass of wine and pleasant company, a French cooking class is a trip for all the senses (and fun, too). We opted for a private cooking class in Paris with Léo, a chef who has cooked in several top restaurants throughout his life. 

The first dish we learned how to cook was a French cheese plate and handmade bread accompanied by filled vine leaves. After that, we learned about French cuisine, the main ingredients, preparation methods, history, and drank some more wine. We learned what ingredients make the French kitchen unique (wine, vinegar, and cheese) and made a delicious ratatouille, one of France's most popular vegetable dishes. 

We read you can also do these courses online, but you have to get the ingredients and tools beforehand. A good option for digital visitors!

Colombia

The Coffee Triangle - which includes the pueblo towns of Salento and Filandia - has its own culture, diversity, food and of course, coffee.

I was told that I would find the best cup of coffee in the world in Colombia’s Zona Cafetera. I found some of the tastiest beans in little vintage cafes with vintage coffee machines. The coffee plantations nearby offered tasting sessions too. Part of the fun Is to climb on the back of a colorful Jeep to get to the plantations.

On the Coffee Road, in the colorful town of Salento, the biggest attraction - besides the coffee and the arepas - is its traditional architecture of one- and two-story buildings, with walls painted white, and doors and window frames in the brightest of candy colors.

Catalonia, Spain, is home to the medieval village of Siurana, a hidden gem perched on a dramatic limestone cliff overlooking the Siurana Reservoir and the rugged Prades Mountains. Known for its breathtaking views, cobblestone streets, and tragic legends, Siurana was the last Muslim stronghold in Catalonia, falling to Christian forces in the 12th century. Today, it’s a paradise for hikers, rock climbers, and photographers looking to immerse themselves in history and nature.
