Chile

This 1.5-hour experience takes place at CasaPlan—a collaborative workspace for artists living in the city of Valparaíso and the wider Fifth Region of Chile. Located in El Plan (the flat part of the city), CasaPlan features a printmaking workshop, two galleries dedicated to contemporary Chilean art, and a cafe. Hosted by one of CasaPlan's resident mixed-media artists, Marcela Rodriguez, you will enjoy a private tour of the printmaking workshop, witness a lithography demonstration, and engage with creatives over their latest projects. 

Traditionally using limestone slabs, lithography is a printing technique that works on the immiscibility of oil and water. Marcela will also accompany you to the two visual art shows—explaining the concept behind each installation. In the instance that one of the artists exhibited is available in the workshop, Marcela will facilitate a cultural exchange with them. The experience includes coffee/tea and a slice of cake in the cafe and a print to take home.

CasaPlan is a cultural hub in Valparaíso that brings together art, food, education, and hospitality in a beautiful historic space. It was founded by the female artist Javiera Moreira and the architect Antonia Jarpa to serve as a printmaking workshop where established artists nurture emerging creatives through courses and residency programs. Being located on the periphery of Valparaíso's typical tourist trail means the venue retains a community vibe and is primarily visited by artists and local residents. 

Although cafe-goers glimpse the artists at work in the open-concept studio, Marcela's experience is the only means of interaction. As one one the few bilingual creatives, Marcela can facilitate conversations with the resident artists and lead a fascinating dialogue about Chile's modern art scene. Marcela will also escort you to the two art shows which often exhibit work by CasaPlan's resident artists. She will provide insightful commentary on the pieces, to be continued over coffee.

Meet Marcela in CasaPlan on Avenida Brasil, in Valparaíso, Chile. Upon arrival, make yourself known to a member of staff at the cafe and they will call Marcela from the workshop.

Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist who grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis in the US and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico, at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at CasaPlan in Valparaíso.

Türkiye

Step into a Kurdish family home in Istanbul for an intimate Dengbej storytelling and dinner experience. Dengbej is a traditional Kurdish music style where singers recount epic tales of history, love, and loss using only their voices in an a cappella-style performance. You’ll start with a neighborhood walk, getting to know the local Kurdish community, before gathering around the family table for a home-cooked Kurdish dinner, prepared by the host’s mother.

As you tuck into your meal, a professional singer will perform a variety of Dengbej songs that convey the struggles and resilience of the Kurdish people, reflecting their historical, social, and cultural experiences. Once forbidden during periods of repression in Turkey, Dengbej has survived through clandestine performances and oral transmission. This experience allows you to delve into the origins and nuances of this vibrant art form while hearing the stories of a Kurdish family based in Istanbul.

This experience offers a rare chance to engage with Dengbej storytelling in a private Kurdish home, surrounded by warmth and hospitality. Unlike staged performances, this is an intimate gathering where songs are woven into personal stories. Your host, Baver, and his family will welcome you into their home, where professional Dengbej singer Xalide, from a lineage of Dengbej singers, brings this tradition to life.

Dengbej is one of the oldest forms of storytelling, dating back thousands of years. Despite centuries of suppression, it remains a vital record of Kurdish history and identity. Each song recounts tales of love, battles, and farewells, blending spoken word and melody. At the edge of Granada’s Albaicín neighborhood stands a factory where Fajalauza has been making pottery the same way for over 500 years. Fajalauza is a living record of Granada’s artistic identity, tracing its techniques to the Al-Andalus period and the workshops once clustered near Puerta de Fajalauza. This ceramic tradition blends Islamic, Iberian, Andalusian influences into a style known across Spain: white enamel, cobalt blue and green glazes, and patterns that echo the Alhambra.

This tour, led by a member of the Fajalauza Foundation, opens parts of the site normally closed to the public: kiln rooms, workshop floors, the small museum where archive pieces sit beside recent works. The glazes echo those used for centuries, often inspired by the Alhambra.

Ceramics here were created for daily use: vessels to carry water, preserve food, identify homes, mark graves. Even now, their forms remain largely unchanged. Few places in Spain hold time, rhythm, and tradition in such balance.

Fajalauza is one of few surviving craft lineages in Spain with unbroken continuity from Post-Reconquista era to the present. Fajalauza tiles replaced originals in Patio de los Arrayanes. Still run by the Morales family since the 19th century, its techniques and motifs—heraldic eagles, grenadine sprigs, blue-green latticework—have remained largely unchanged. The factory’s location, firing techniques, and visual language have endured war, exile and mass production. It is here, in the factory, where each piece begins—still shaped by wheel, hand, story.

The Morales family now runs the Fajalauza Foundation which preserves its legacy. This experience offers access not only to the factory but to the people preserving it. The Foundation’s members guide you through kilns, archives, workshops, sharing their stories. The tour is about heritage—but also part of a larger effort to preserve and convert it into a cultural center and school. You become part of that.

Fajalauza is a national institution. Its works have appeared in international exhibitions, design circles, and documentaries, recognized as the soul of Granada’s ceramics tradition. The Fundación Fajalauza now works to safeguard the historic site, protect traditional methods, and share the knowledge held by the last generation of master artisans.

Chemi and his team are warm, fluent, and deeply knowledgeable—generous stewards of both heritage and hospitality. With them, you gain rare access to the art, stories, and meaning behind one of Spain’s most iconic crafts.

Japan

The city of Iwatsuki, just outside of Tokyo, is one of Japan's major centers for Ningyo doll production. Much more than simple toys, the dolls are celebrated as works of arts created by master artisans preserving an important aspect of Japanese heritage. Your guide, Hiro, will introduce you to the world of Japanese dolls starting with a curated tour of a doll museum, where he will explain the history of ningyo dolls and their production process. 

After the museum, you'll enjoy lunch at a long-established traditional Japanese restaurant before heading to the Ifuji Ningyo Shop, where you will learn the traditional technique of "kimekomi," pressing fabric into grooves carved in the doll's body to create clothing. Your teacher will be a master artisan who has been maintaining the craft as part of many generations of craftspeople in Iwatsuki. Take your work home with you as a special souvenir.

Finally, you'll visit a local doll shop for more up-close viewing and shopping for ningyo dolls.

This full day experience gives you a rare opportunity to be immersed in the world of Japanese dolls, learning how they are made and getting a chance to participate in the process, and viewing works of art in a museum. The three-hour workshop led by a master artisan is not a rushed, assembly line experience, but a naturally paced opportunity to appreciate the skills required to manufacture these dolls and chat with the artisan about their work.

While many centers of traditional crafts are located far from Tokyo in difficult-to-reach locations, Iwatsuki is conveniently accessible by train in Saitama Prefecture, just an hour from central Tokyo, making it a perfect way to spend a day experiencing a unique aspect of Japanese culture.

Evolving Art: Palazzo Grassi

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

Fes Medina: Bab To Bab

Cádiz, Spain, is home to Plaza de San Juan de Dios, a lively and historic square that has served as the city’s social and commercial hub for centuries. Dating back to the 16th century, this elegant plaza is framed by colorful neoclassical buildings, palm trees, and lively cafés, making it a perfect place to soak in the atmosphere of Cádiz. Overlooking the square is the striking Town Hall (Ayuntamiento de Cádiz), while fountains and street performers add to the vibrant energy of this must-visit spot.

1. The Town Hall of Cádiz, an elegant neoclassical building with a grand clock tower, has stood as a symbol of the city’s governance since the 18th century.

2. A dancing water fountain display, installed during recent renovations, creates a mesmerizing effect at night with colorful lights illuminating the plaza.

3. Traditional cafés and tapas bars line the square, offering delicious local specialties like fried fish (pescaíto frito) and tortillitas de camarones (shrimp fritters).

4. The Church of San Juan de Dios, dating back to the 16th century, features an impressive Baroque interior and a collection of religious artifacts.

5. A statue of Spanish politician Segismundo Moret, a key figure in 19th-century Spanish politics, stands at the center of the plaza, adding historical significance to the site.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the evening to enjoy the illuminated fountains and a relaxed dinner at one of the plaza’s open-air restaurants while listening to live street music.

Plaza de San Juan de Dios

The Moroccan fig liquor is beginning to sneak up on me. Or perhaps it’s the jet lag. The soulful music of the live folk vocalist is not helping either. 

We’re waiting for dinner, in the courtyard of a restored Riad. It’s a good thing I haven’t eaten much during the flight because very soon, it’s clear that they expect me to have the appetite of a small army. 

The food is absolutely delicious, and here’s what I learn:
“Salad” is a selection of 5-10 amazing dips served with khobz - flatbread. 
Pigeon pastille is a must-have any time you see it on a menu!
Tagine of lamb with fluffy couscous - when cooked to perfection as it is here - is irresistible. 

This is followed by an elaborate dessert course, mint tea prepared with precision and ceremony, gnawa singers and a belly dancer who insists on audience participation. 

This story celebrates a series of unforgettable meals in Marrakesh - some in fine restaurants and others on the street.
