The Mafra Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the most important Baroque structure (and the largest building) in Portugal. It was commissioned by King Dom João V in the 18th century, funded by the wealth coming from Brazil. The complex is organized around central interior courtyards, where the Basilica, Convent, and Palace meet and intersect. This architectural complex represents one of the artistic, architectural, and cultural highlights of Portugal.

The Mafra Palace-Basilica-Convent is unique for its scale, sumptuousness, and quality of architecture and decoration. Some highlights include the Infirmary, the Throne Hall, and the Library, which holds about 35,000 rare books. The Basilica is adorned with a unique collection of Italian Baroque statues (the largest outside Italy), six historical pipe organs, and two carillons composed of nearly 100 bells.

The building is also a very important landmark in Portuguese history. It originally reflected the wealth and power of King João V but also represents the lives of several other kings who spent time there, in the surrounding gardens or the nearby royal hunting park. King Manuel II spent his last night in Portugal in one of its rooms before leaving the kingdom forever after the fall of the monarchy in 1910, departing from the nearby Ericeira village beach.

The Cerco Garden stands on one of the flanks of the Convent-Palace. Initially designed and inspired by Versailles, only a small part of the garden was completed. Cerco Garden serves as the perfect transition between the vast, walled former Royal Hunting area, known as Tapada Real, and the monumental Convent-Palace. At an eco center located on a 1200 year-old chinampa you see axolotl, the mythical amphibian once considered a delicacy of Aztec gods. You'll also meet Lupita, a Xochimilco native who welcomes you with organic coffee. She explains how the first inhabitants developed milpa, an ancestral and sustainable system of crop production. You may see small offerings once placed beneath crops by Xochimilca women, honoring Chicomecóatl, the corn goddess.

You explore the chinampa's crops and pick your favorites. Lupita will ask you to help her make a delicious green salsa, which, along with the freshly harvested salad and tlacoyitos filled with beans, will be your fresh, organic lunch.

This is not a party trajinera tour. Instead, you'll experience Xochimilco in a mindful and peaceful way. The experience begins in Marseille and heads toward the Mediterranean coast. The road climbs through pine woods and vineyards before reaching Cassis, a small harbor town at the edge of the Calanques National Park. A walk through its narrow streets leads to the harbor and waterfront, lined with colorful houses. There is time for a short boat excursion into the Calanques and a light lunch.

The route then continues along the clifftop Route des Crêtes to Cap Canaille, where the cliffs rise to nearly 400 meters above the sea. From the viewpoints, the coastline opens onto broad views across the bay of La Ciotat and the island of Île Verte.

A visit to a local Cassis winemaker introduces you to the white wines for which this small appellation is best known. Following the coastal road back to Marseille, the day ends at the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, with wide views over the harbor, Fort Saint-Jean, and the Old Port.

Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

The Brancacci Chapel, tucked away in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, is renowned for its frescoes. These masterpieces, primarily by Masaccio and Masolino, mark a pivotal moment in the history of art, showcasing the early Renaissance's break from Gothic conventions - a must-visit for art lovers: 
1 - The Brancacci Chapel's walls are adorned with frescoes that revolutionized Renaissance art. Masaccio's 'Expulsion from the Garden of Eden' and 'The Tribute Money' are particularly notable for their use of perspective and chiaroscuro, techniques that added a new dimension and realism to painting. These works had a profound influence on later artists, including Michelangelo and Raphael.
2 - The frescoes are a result of the collaboration between Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippino Lippi. While Masolino initiated the project with a softer, more Gothic style, Masaccio's contributions introduced a more naturalistic approach. Lippi, completing the chapel after Masaccio's untimely death, brought his unique touch, bridging the gap between the early and high Renaissance styles.

The Vasari Corridor, an elevated kilometer-long passageway, is a symbol of the Medici family's influence in Renaissance Florence. Commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici in 1565, this corridor connects the Uffizi Gallery to the Pitti Palace, offering a unique journey through Florence's history, art, and architecture. 1 - Designed by Giorgio Vasari, the corridor was constructed to allow the Medici family to move freely and safely between their residence in Palazzo Pitti and the government headquarters in Palazzo Vecchio. 2 - As you walk through the corridor, you are surrounded by an exquisite collection of artwork, mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a unique collection of artists' self-portraits. 3 - The corridor has witnessed both tragic and triumphant moments in Florence's history. In 1993, a section of the corridor was heavily damaged by a terrorist attack commissioned by the Italian mafia, destroying several artworks. 4 - The section over Ponte Vecchio offers breathtaking views of the Arno River and the city. In 1939, Benito Mussolini ordered the enlargement of the corridor's windows for Adolf Hitler's visit, allowing an even more impressive vista. This panoramic view was reportedly so admired by Hitler that he ordered Ponte Vecchio to be spared from bombing during World War II​​.

5 - The corridor concludes with a view of the Church of Santa Felicita, where the Medici attended Holy Mass from a privileged vantage point.

At the close of the turtle hatching season, in January this year, when only a handful of nests remained, we assisted Mel Tennant, fondly known as The Turtle Man, in releasing 54 newly hatched Hawkbill Turtles into the ocean.

The turtle hatchlings — incredibly — found the ocean on their own, with no help or nudging from us. How do they know where to go and how to swim right after they are hatched? Well, they do. Sea turtles are born with the instinct to move toward the brightest direction.

The Oracabessa Bay Sea Turtle Project, under Mel’s extraordinary leadership, provides incubation support and the safe release of these endangered creatures.
