Andrea Bustillos, trained in Madrid, previously directed a gallery focused on contemporary painting and now leads a national program supporting Mexico’s Creative Industries. Andrea Villers, educated in Granada with a master’s in Curatorial Studies from UNAM, runs a consultancy that develops exhibition projects and advises on cultural strategy.

Their experience is in-depth and shaped by their knowledge of the local art scene and strong relationships with artists, curators, and institutions. On rare occasions when they are unavailable, their trusted colleagues Jaime and Mario—also seasoned art historians—will host in their place.

Chile

This full-day tour introduces you to the cultural heritage of Chile’s Atacama Desert, the world's driest non-polar desert where landscapes comprise volcanoes, salt flats, geysers, and lagoons. Hosted by Mirko, a bilingual guide, you will venture into remote valleys to learn about the Atacameños (the "people of the region") and explore a little-known archaeological site. The purpose is to connect with the local community and understand how the people of the Atacama have adapted to this demanding yet beautiful environment.

The morning is spent with a community where many individuals hail from the Lickanantay ethnic group. You will walk alongside llama herders while hearing tales about ancient Andean life and how the worldview is upheld. Next, you will oversee a clay-making workshop before dining on a lunch typical of this region. The afternoon is spent at the Tulor Archaeological Site, learning about of the architecture, society, and life of the early Atacameños.

The experience is a rare access invitation to connect with the people who descend from a 10,000-year-old culture steeped in agriculture, animal husbandry, and the cosmos. Once a semi-nomadic tribe, this civilization adapted over the years and developed advanced agricultural techniques.

Traditionally used to decorate manuscripts, textiles, and ceramics, Ebru has been cherished in Turkey since the Ottoman era, blending artistic expression with meditative practice.

Set in a tranquil Istanbul gallery, this hands-on session begins with an introduction to Ebru’s rich history and cultural significance. You’ll observe a live demonstration by a master artist, learning the techniques of working with fabric—how to prepare the base, control the pigments, and create balanced, flowing designs. Using natural earth pigments, you’ll craft a vibrant scarf, watching colors float, swirl, and settle into intricate shapes before being transferred onto fabric. With over two decades of experience, Nesime has been leading workshops at her Galatart Ebru Workshop in Istanbul since 2009. Her passion for preserving Turkish marbling has led her to explore its many forms, from bookbinding to fabric design. She has perfected the intricate process of transferring Ebru onto textiles, creating wearable and decorative artworks that honor this historic craft. Through her engaging workshops, Nesime not only teaches technique but also shares the rich symbolism and meditative qualities of Ebru, ensuring that each participant leaves with a deeper appreciation for this living tradition.

remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. The museum of photographs is fascinating in how it came about – two famous photographers, Patrick Menac’h and Hamid Mergani, brought together their common passion for vintage Moroccan photography, and pooled their photos for the public to admire. Here I realize how black-and-white photos can dramatize the light-and-shadow effects in the medina.

From the terrace, you can have a glass of mint tea, and wonder about the thousands of satellite dishes that dominate the view. 

It’s peaceful here. On a clear day, you can see the snow-clad High Atlas Mountains. But you can’t see the chaos of Djemaa el-Fna, or hear shouts of ‘Balek!’ whenever donkey-carts come through laden with heavy goods. You can’t see the ‘hand of Fatima’ good-luck symbols painted on the carts after they have ambled past you. Or count the number of chickens being transported on the back of a groaning Vespa.

Technopolis City of Athens

At Riisitunturi National Park, ancient trees enveloped in layers of sticky snow (called ‘tykky’ in Finnish) assume fantastical shapes of monsters, ghosts, birds and families of snow people. On days like this, when sunrise and sunset happen within a two-hour window, backgrounds are brushed in pinks and yellows, and foregrounds etched with tracks of reindeer, dogs and humans. 

Snow is something more than frozen water to the Sami people. It’s a way of expressing the basis of their existence.

Best time to visit? Late December to March. Getting there from Rovaniemi takes more than 2 hours each way, but the trails are easy - we did a 4 km.

The Coffee Triangle - which includes the pueblo towns of Salento and Filandia - has its own culture, diversity, food and of course, coffee.

I was told that I would find the best cup of coffee in the world in Colombia’s Zona Cafetera. I found some of the tastiest beans in little vintage cafes with vintage coffee machines. The coffee plantations nearby offered tasting sessions too. Part of the fun Is to climb on the back of a colorful Jeep to get to the plantations.

On the Coffee Road, in the colorful town of Salento, the biggest attraction - besides the coffee and the arepas - is its traditional architecture of one- and two-story buildings, with walls painted white, and doors and window frames in the brightest of candy colors.

Essaouira, Morocco, is home to its bustling Port of Essaouira, a vibrant hub of the city’s maritime culture and a must-visit destination for food lovers and photographers. Famous for its bright blue fishing boats, the port offers an authentic glimpse into the city’s seafaring traditions, with fishermen hauling in fresh catches daily. Adjacent to the port, the Fresh Seafood Market tempts visitors with displays of just-caught fish, shrimp, octopus, and lobster, all ready to be cooked on the spot by local vendors.

1. Watch the colorful blue fishing boats return from sea, creating a picture-perfect scene and offering plenty of opportunities for vibrant photography.

2. Stroll through the fresh seafood stalls, where vendors display their catch of the day, from sardines and sea bass to exotic shellfish.

3. Enjoy a true local experience by choosing your seafood and having it grilled to perfection at one of the nearby market stalls—served simply with lemon, bread, and local spices.

4. The port’s historic ramparts and Skala de la Ville offer panoramic views of the ocean, fishing boats, and bustling market activity below.

5. Get a glimpse into daily life as fishermen mend their nets or haggle with buyers, offering an authentic look at Essaouira’s maritime traditions.

Visitor Tip: Visit in the morning to catch the fishermen returning with their fresh catch, and bring cash for small purchases. Don’t forget to try grilled sardines—Essaouira’s most iconic seafood snack!
