Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

Argentina

This experience takes place at the studio of celebrated tango dancer, teacher, and choreographer Gisela Vidal. In a one-hour workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of tango—from posture and footwork to the subtle, improvised cues that turn each step into a shared language. Born in Buenos Aires in the late 1800s, tango emerged from working-class neighborhoods as a fusion of African rhythms, European melodies, and immigrant longing. In neighborhoods like San Telmo and La Boca, tango spilled into the streets—danced in courtyards, bars, and late-night cafés—becoming a mirror of the city’s mood and motion.

After the session, you’ll share mate (a traditional herbal infusion) or wine with Gisela. In this informal moment, she’ll share stories from her own globetrotting career and offer deeper insight into how tango has evolved—not just as a dance, but as a living expression of Argentine identity.

Gisela Vidal has spent over 20 years performing and teaching tango, with a career that’s taken her to more than 40 countries—every continent except Antarctica (for now). She has performed at international festivals, appeared on television, and taught dancers around the world.

Her method is intuitive and personalized, using a range of exercises to help students develop fluidity, elegance, and their own expressive style. Drawing from other dance forms, her coaching is both creative and encouraging, with a focus on feeling, musicality, and the subtle dialogue between lead and follow.

Growing up in Buenos Aires, Gisela Vidal danced her first tango at the age of 14. From there, she trained extensively in Tango Salon and Tango Stage style with the finest Argentinian Masters. Besides tango, Gisela has studied contemporary dance, jazz, belly dance, ballet, Argentine folk, and salsa. She has undertaken further tuition in theater and film acting, mime and clown art, and singing.

Gisela has participated in international tango festivals and major events including the opening of the Dakar 2009 in Buenos Aires. She was the choreographer and a stunt dancer for the Tango Infedele Video Clip.

During her 20-year career, Gisela has danced and coached in over 40 countries. She co-managed a tango school in Milan and coordinated the Tango Querido School in Tuscany. She launched her own jewelry business in 2018.

The Coffee Triangle - which includes the pueblo towns of Salento and Filandia - has its own culture, diversity, food and of course, coffee.

I was told that I would find the best cup of coffee in the world in Colombia’s Zona Cafetera. I found some of the tastiest beans in little vintage cafes with vintage coffee machines. The coffee plantations nearby offered tasting sessions too. Part of the fun Is to climb on the back of a colorful Jeep to get to the plantations.

On the Coffee Road, in the colorful town of Salento, the biggest attraction - besides the coffee and the arepas - is its traditional architecture of one- and two-story buildings, with walls painted white, and doors and window frames in the brightest of candy colors.

Coffee Culture

Hidden beneath the streets of Naples, the Galleria Borbonica is an underground tunnel system with a fascinating history dating back to the 19th century. Originally commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon as an escape route from the Royal Palace, the tunnels later served as a bomb shelter during World War II and a storage site for abandoned vehicles and artifacts. Tips for Visiting
The best way to explore is through a guided tour, available in multiple languages. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended, as the terrain can be uneven. Bringing a light jacket is advised, as the tunnels remain cool year-round. Booking in advance is highly recommended, as tours often sell out quickly.

Galleria Borbonica

Portugal is home to vast cork oak forests (montados), particularly in the Alentejo region, where traditional cork harvesting has been practiced for centuries. Portugal produces over 50% of the world’s cork, used for everything from wine stoppers to sustainable fashion. These forests not only support rural communities but also provide a crucial habitat for wildlife, including the endangered Iberian lynx. A guided visit to a cork farm offers a fascinating look into this eco-friendly industry, from the hand-harvesting process to the transformation of cork into everyday products.

Palacio de Bellas Artes

Set in the picturesque Maria Luisa Park within the Plaza de América, the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions is a beacon of Andalusian ethnological heritage. Housed in the Mudejar Pavilion, designed by Aníbal González for the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition, this museum offers a deep dive into the region’s traditional culture. With its rich collection ranging from ceramics to lace and embroidery, it beautifully preserves the customs, crafts, and ways of life that have shaped Andalusia over centuries.

Museum of Popular Arts

Corfu, Greece, is home to the Church of Agios Spyridon, one of the island’s most iconic landmarks and a revered religious site dedicated to Saint Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu. Built in the 16th century, this Venetian-style church is known for its distinctive red-domed bell tower—the tallest in Corfu—and its rich history of miracles attributed to the saint. Housing the relics of Saint Spyridon, the church is both a place of deep spiritual significance and an architectural gem in the heart of Corfu Town’s old district.

Church of Agios Spyridon

Pyrgos is a trendy hilltop medieval village. It’s full of little winding, narrow streets constructed haphazardly on the hills alongside multi-colored houses and doors. We lose our way several times and keep looping back to the same point .. using that as an excuse to check out yet another local art gallery constructed unobtrusively into the hillside. 

During the 15th and 16th century, the locals defended themselves from pirates by erecting kastelias .. fortified buildings. Pyrgos has the best example of these medieval buildings on the island. It also has the oldest churches.

We stop at a home with a large blue door .. and the views are stunning but give an impression that Santorini is flat and covered by vineyards instead of being a caldera. 

The one fascinating feature of homes here is a long, deep chimney for ventilation. And the strong winds make howling noises through the chimneys.

In Pyrgos, we visited vineyards ... but that’s a different story.

Old Blue Doors

Alsancak is one of İzmir’s liveliest districts, where historic charm meets modern entertainment. Its narrow streets are lined with well-preserved buildings, trendy cafes, and boutique shops, creating a perfect blend of culture and modernity. As night falls, the area comes alive with music, laughter, and the hum of a vibrant nightlife scene.
1. Beautifully preserved historic architecture lines the streets, adding a unique character to the area.
2. Chic cafes and restaurants serve everything from local specialties to international cuisine.
3. The neighborhood’s vibrant nightlife includes bars, live music venues, and bustling clubs.

Alsancak Neighborhood

Vlychada Beach on Santorini is a unique and serene destination, known for its dramatic lunar-like landscape and tranquil atmosphere. Located on the southern coast of the island, this beach is framed by towering white volcanic cliffs carved by the wind and sea, creating an otherworldly backdrop. Its soft gray sand and clear waters make it an ideal spot for relaxation, far from the bustling crowds of Santorini’s more famous beaches. 
1. The beach’s volcanic cliffs, sculpted into surreal shapes, are its defining feature, making it one of the most photogenic locations on the island. 
2. The soft gray volcanic sand and pebbles contrast beautifully with the azure waters of the Aegean Sea, offering a peaceful and natural setting for sunbathing. 
3. Calm and uncrowded, Vlychada Beach is perfect for those seeking a more tranquil experience compared to other Santorini beaches. 
4. A nearby marina with traditional fishing boats adds to the charm of the area and offers a glimpse into the island’s maritime culture. 
5. The beach is located close to the Santorini Arts Factory, a cultural hub with exhibitions and events celebrating local creativity and history. 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 2–3 hours at Vlychada Beach. Bring your own beach essentials, as amenities are limited, and consider staying for the sunset, which paints the cliffs in golden hues.

Vlychada Beach

Nestled on the northeastern slopes of Athens’ Acropolis, Anafiotika is a charming and historic neighborhood that feels like a Cycladic island village transported to the heart of the Greek capital. Built in the mid-19th century by stonemasons from the island of Anafi, who came to Athens to help construct King Otto’s palace, this neighborhood is a tranquil oasis of whitewashed houses, vibrant bougainvillea, and narrow, winding streets. Its unique blend of Cycladic architecture and urban history offers visitors a serene escape from the city’s bustling energy. 
1. The neighborhood’s homes feature signature white walls, flat roofs, and brightly painted shutters, reminiscent of the Greek islands. Despite being in the shadow of the Acropolis, Anafiotika retains its island-inspired charm. 
2. From many spots in Anafiotika, visitors are rewarded with sweeping vistas of Athens, stretching to the Aegean Sea. Sunset here is particularly magical. 
3. The maze-like alleys are perfect for leisurely exploration, with each turn revealing hidden courtyards, colorful flowers, and local charm. 
4. The neighborhood is almost car-free, creating a peaceful retreat where you can enjoy the gentle hum of daily life and occasional melodies of traditional Greek music. 
5. Anafiotika’s location makes it an ideal starting point or detour for visitors heading to the iconic Acropolis. 
Visitor Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, as the cobblestone paths can be uneven. Bring a camera to capture the postcard-perfect beauty!
