Japan

Step inside a working Buddhist temple in Osaka and spend several hours following the rhythms of a monk’s day. You’ll meet your hosts - a practicing monk who also works as an architect, and Zane, who has spent ten years in Japan studying religious and cultural traditions. Then you’ll change into the traditional robes of a monk and begin a series of mindful rituals.

First, a guided meditation and the practice of shakyo: hand-copying sutras in the form of kanji characters using brush and ink. This is a daily ritual for monks, intended to steady the mind before service. Later, you'll assist with the daily temple tasks, from preparing for festivals to sweeping the temple grounds.

Midday, you’ll share a shojin ryori meal: a simple, seasonal vegetarian lunch prepared in the Buddhist tradition. Zane provides translation, insights and context throughout.

At the end of the day, you’ll receive either a goshuin (temple stamp) or omamori (amulet)—a small marker of your day as a monk in Osaka.

Most introductions to monastic life in Japan take place in rural retreats. This temple is an active religious site in the grid of central Osaka. You’ll speak with the monks about their lives, explore the overlaps and tensions between secular and spiritual paths, and observe how Buddhist tradition is preserved and adapted in a modern context.

The monk who leads the experience also works as an architect. His approach integrates design with ritual. His wife prepares the mid-day meal using principles of shojin ryori passed down through temple tradition. Zane, who has spent a decade in Japan, helps translate both language and context, offering interpretation that clarifies without interrupting the cadence of the day.

This experience exists because of their friendship. The access comes through trust and invitation. Their hospitality and passion for sharing Japanese culture are generous. You’ll come away with insight and understanding of a world that usually stays closed to outsiders.

The experience is co-led by a temple monk who also works as an architect. He is passionate about blending modern design with tradition and along with his wife, who was born into a temple family, works to promote Japanese culture by creating various events such as tea ceremonies. 

Your co-host is Zane, a resident of Japan for 10 years originally from New York. His passion for learning about traditional Japanese culture and sharing it with overseas visitors has led him to close collaborations with Japanese people to share unique experiences for visitors to Japan. Zane also practices Japanese calligraphy and has a workshop in Kyoto.

Mexico

This private 90-minute mezcal tasting is designed for first-timers curious about agave spirits, as well as longtime fans seeking a short, deeply rooted way to gain new appreciation. Andrea — an anthropologist and longtime resident of Coyoacán with family roots in Guerrero — begins with a brief walk near her studio in a neighborhood shaped by the encounter of colonial and Indigenous cultures — the roots from which mezcal emerged.

Back at her studio, you’ll taste three distinct mezcals from Guerrero, each carefully selected by Andrea. As you sip, she shares the cultural context behind each variety — from the agave species to traditional distillation methods. You’ll learn how to “kiss” the mezcal, as Spanish speakers say — a slow, attentive tasting style that reveals each glass’s unique character. Each mezcal is paired with locally inspired bites, drawing on the Guerrero heritage Andrea brings to both her cooking and design, and curated to enhance and echo the complexity of the spirits.

The setting is relaxed, the guidance personal, and the flavors unforgettable. This is a rare introduction to mezcal by someone who lives and breathes its culture. Andrea has spent years sourcing, bottling, and sharing small-batch mezcal from Guerrero. Her background as an anthropologist brings depth: this isn’t just about what mezcal is, but why it matters — culturally, historically, personally.

Andrea is an anthropologist by training, Master Mezcalier by trade, and a singer. She has fifteen years of experience promoting Guerrero State's mezcal culture and traditions, an area not typically associated with mezcal, but with plenty of flavors that are a joy to discover.

Andrea's own work in mezcal emerged from an extensive family history, where numerous memories and experiences have been intrinsically linked to the enjoyment of this spirit, always accompanied by good food and music. Since 2010, Andrea has been an integral part of the new narrative being woven around mezcal from Guerrero, actively contributing to its recognition and appreciation both nationally and internationally. 

Andrea's knowledge encompasses not only the specific culture of Guerrero, but extends to the diverse traditions that exist throughout the length and breadth of Mexico. She is certified as a Master Mezcalier and as a Leader in Food and Beverage Sensory Evaluation.

In a 3-hour walk you follow Madrid’s monumental architectural arc from medieval settlement to early 20th-century modernity. Among its various highlights are — San Nicolás de los Servitas, the city’s oldest church built in the Middle Ages. Pontifical Basilica of San Miguel, a Baroque church famed for its rare convex façade and sculptural allegories. Crypt of La Almudena Cathedral, a vast neo-Romanesque subterranean space with over 400 uniquely capped columns. Real Basílica de San Francisco el Grande, crowned by a large circular dome, houses Spanish paintings from Zurbarán to Goya.

The Bonneville Salt Flats are not to be missed! A slight detour off I-80 near the UT/NV is a moon-like alternate universe not to be missed. Go for a quick run through the salt flats or just stop for a quick photo op or picnic!

Juta Valley is a wonderful area in Georgia near the
 Stepantsminda town. 
This picture was taken on the way to the mountain lake and it's absolutely breathtaking! I had a feeling that Iam in the movie "The lord of rings".

On a foggy morning as the sun rose over Lake Inle, my boatman took me to the rendezvous point deep inside Inle Lake. Three fishermen sat in their boats with little fires to warm them up. They had promised me the previous evening to do a demonstration of their fishing technique. 

The quintessential pose of the Inle fisherman involves standing at the end of the boat on one leg with the other wrapped around his oar. Inle is a shallow lake and standing wouldn’t let they see the reeds below, they explain. Plus they use their body to propel the boat, leaving their hands free to collect their fishing net. 

Then they throw the cone-shape nets into the water, pressing on it with their foot so it sinks to the bottom where the fish are and traps them in.
