Mexico

This expert-led historical tour is an enriching experience and the perfect deep dive into pre-Columbian Mexico, a culture that remains alive today.

The Nahua are one of the most prominent and impactful indigenous groups in Mesoamerica. Nahua culture is diverse, stretching across civilizations such as the Mexica (Aztecs) and Tlaxcalteca, among others.

To explore this heritage, we’ll begin at the Cuicuilco archaeological site, a thriving city between 350 and 150 CE before it was engulfed by lava from the Xitle volcano. Here, you’ll gain an understanding of Mexica archaeology and culture.

Moving downtown, you’ll dive into an introductory Náhuatl language class. For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. I often drive the two hours to catch the sunrise in Virginia Beach. Rudee’s Inlet is a favorite spot because of the contrast of the rocks.

Getting there on a little ferry tossed around on the surging Atlantic Ocean needs courage. As the boat uses all her resources to maneuver into a tight, rocky harbor, I wonder if the captain, who does this twice a day, is either extremely brave or completely suicidal. We step on to what looks like the sets of a Disney fantasy movie. Twenty colorful grass-roofed homes, one little schoolhouse - which has one child - and a bridge over the Atlantic.

I meet my guide Harald - a septuagenarian with poise to rival the curious sheep we see hanging precariously over the cliffs. Harald leads our little group on a 4-hour hike across the island to the lighthouse at the westernmost point of the Faroes.

Birds are everywhere - puffins, fulmars, kittiwakes, gannets - on the green hills, riding the ocean waves, occupying every inch of cliff space, filling the air with their calls, and circling the sky.

Naples, Italy, is home to Spaccanapoli, the city’s most famous and historic street that slices through the heart of the ancient center. This narrow, bustling thoroughfare is more than just a road—it’s a journey through Naples’ rich history, culture, and daily life. 1. Archaeological wonders include the Tophet, a Punic sanctuary, and the Necropolis, showcasing the island’s deep-rooted Phoenician and Carthaginian history.

Created by potter José Franco in the 1940s, this miniaturized village features authentic replicas of old Portuguese homes, mills, workshops, and shops that reflect the customs and everyday lives of the Portuguese countryside.

1. Explore a charming miniature village that recreates rural Portuguese life with attention to detail. You’ll find scaled-down houses, churches, schools, and windmills, each showing different aspects of traditional Portuguese architecture and the everyday lives of past generations.

Visit Aldeia José Franco

India

My taxi driver, Chand, tries his best to persuade me to change the plan - “K.R. Market is a complete mess in the rainy season”, he argues, and for effect, twists his head around to the back seat to look at my tunic, shakes his head, and declares woefully — “You will be covered in mud and smelly water”. Sadly for him, I can’t resist a wholesale flower market. 

At sunrise every day, the southern end of Avenue Road lines up with a couple hundred flower vendors. Business between 5 to 8 a.m. is hectic and noisy.. Since it’s well past 10 a.m. now, I weave my way instead through stalls of vegetables, fruits and spices to find the building where these vendors disappear to after their morning sales. 

Chand is right about the mulch smells and slushy floors.  Climb up to the second floor to find a quiet spot to view the action from above. Or wander through the narrow passages, as I do, stepping around baskets full of flowers. 

For the record, my tunic remains mud-and-slush-free.
