The Fernwayer Film — The Human Side of Travel
6 min · MP4
Shot mainly in Venice — a boatman who has spent his life on the lagoon, a fourth-generation fisherman, an art director and urban explorer, a glass artist — with segments from Spain, Japan, Mexico, and other parts of Italy. Screened at Westminster Abbey as part of Monarchy and Democracy: A History of Leadership, where Fernwayer features as a Leader in Sustainability.
The human side of travel has always existed. It was just never the easy part to find or book. Fernwayer was made to change that.
“The trip gets better when you stop being the main character.”

“It is a proposition built around hope and optimism: when travel is shaped by local knowledge, generosity and genuine encounter, it can widen perspective, deepen understanding, and leave both travellers and local communities with something of lasting value.”
Alok Singh · Co-founder & CEO
“A tradition survives when the person carrying it can keep doing it with dignity.”

“For us, that is luxury. The moment you no longer feel like a stranger, even though you’re in a new place.”

communications@fernwayer.comFernwayer (www.fernwayer.com) is a San Francisco-based curated marketplace for rare, private travel experiences. Taking its name from Fernweh — farsickness, the opposite of homesickness — Fernwayer co-creates every experience with photographers, fishermen, artisans, historians, chefs, architects, journalists and naturalists: people with real knowledge, a genuine point of view, and a deep connection to place. The result is not a generic tour but a carefully structured human encounter, with depth, access and context that is rarely this easy to find, or this easy to book. Fernwayer launched in mid-May 2024 and currently offers more than 800 experiences across 14 countries.
In 2026, Fernwayer was featured as a Leader in Sustainability in Monarchy and Democracy: A History of Leadership, an official History of Parliament project produced in partnership with St James’s House and launched at Westminster Abbey.
