This full-day tour introduces you to the cultural heritage of Chile’s Atacama Desert, the world's driest non-polar desert where landscapes comprise volcanoes, salt flats, geysers, and lagoons. Hosted by Mirko, a bilingual guide, you will venture into remote valleys to learn about the Atacameños (the "people of the region") and explore a little-known archaeological site. The purpose is to connect with the local community and understand how the people of the Atacama have adapted to this demanding yet beautiful environment.

The morning is spent with a community where many individuals hail from the Lickanantay ethnic group. You will walk alongside llama herders while hearing tales about ancient Andean life and how the worldview is upheld. Next, you will oversee a clay-making workshop before dining on a lunch typical of this region. The afternoon is spent at the Tulor Archaeological Site, learning about of the architecture, society, and life of the early Atacameños.

The experience is a rare access invitation to connect with the people who descend from a 10,000-year-old culture steeped in agriculture, animal husbandry, and the cosmos. Once a semi-nomadic tribe, this civilization adapted over the years and developed advanced agricultural techniques.

Mirko first invites you to participate in the typical day of the Lickanantay people by joining a llama herder on a mindful walk during which they'll share stories about their lifestyle. By observing the molding and firing of clay, you'll hear how a connection is forged between people and land. You'll try it for yourself and take away a piece of worked clay. 

After dining on a lunch of quinoa, corn, pataska, and herbs from the highlands, it's time for the history lesson you wish you'd had at school. Predating the Incas, the Tulor Archaeological Site is one of the oldest pre-Columbian sites in the Americas. As you walk amid the adobe ruins, Mirko will explain evidence of social organization and rituals.

You leave San Sebastián by private transport and drive west toward the coast, where the Basque Country’s food culture begins in daily routines. This private, archaeologist-led visit to San Francisco Monastery and La Merced Convent explores how Cusco shifted from an Inca imperial capital to a colonial city. At San Francisco Monastery, you notice its Baroque façade giving way to decorated chapels and serene courtyards. Delsi draws your attention to the blend of Indigenous and European architectural elements, explaining how local materials, techniques, and ideas were incorporated into a new religious framework -- where the monastery played a continuous role in Cusco’s spiritual and community life since the 16th century.

The walk begins near the Museum of Fine Arts, on the left bank of the Garonne River, and unfolds across roughly four kilometers. You cross central districts before reaching the right bank, stopping at buildings and monuments that illustrate distinct architectural approaches. Stone, iron, concrete, and glass appear as markers of changing priorities — religious authority, commercial expansion, industrial confidence, modern reinvention. You look at proportions, materials, ornament, structure. Fleur guides observation and discussion, explaining influences and why certain buildings became reference points in their period.

While the shrine itself is not accessible to non-Muslims, the area around it offers a peaceful reflective spot for a picnic and stunning views across the Atlas Mountains and up towards the summit of Toubkal. Overall, the Sidi Chamarouch trek offers a profound glimpse into the Amazigh (Berber) spirituality, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural tapestry.  

On this trek, you'll follow the same scenic route both to and from Sidi Chamarouch as it's part of the trail leading to the Toubkal Summit. Experience the elegance of the Nani Bernardo Palace, designed by Architect Vittoria in 1550. Marvel at its harmonious aspect, enriched by a valuable hidden Venetian garden. Should Nani Bernardo be unavailable, the alternative stop is Ca' Rezzonico Palace, another marvel of Venetian architecture - or a similar equally stunning palace, specially selected by Lucia. 

This is a private palace that is accessible only by appointment and with the help of our connection with Lucia. 

Designed by Architect Vittoria, on commission from the Bernardo family, the Palace was built in 1550. 
Around 200 years ago, the current owner's ancestors added a new Italian garden to the palace, demolishing a series of houses on the side closest to the Grand Canal in the process and gave the Palazzo Nani Bernardo an entirely new, and harmonious aspect that is still evident today.

Another element is the really valuable back garden, very nice and extraordinarily extended in length, made during the eighteenth century. In case Nani Bernardo is booked out for a private event, we will replace this stop with Ca. Rezzonico Palace or an equally stunning palace.

This is one of the last remaining boatyards of Venice. Typically hard to access since it's a working facility and tours are not provided without prior notice. It's also essential to have someone local to interpret the workings of the place for you. [Note: There are times when the Squero is closed for maintenance. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. The perfect way to view the red pumice layers of Santorini is to walk from Oia to Ammoudi. Just 214 steps down, the going down part was easy since the reward is a meal at one of Ammoudi’s legendary fish tavernas by the sea.

We buy fresh seafood by weight - the classic order of octopus and calamari along with some fish -  and it’s grilled right then and there. The sights and smells of the sea are so familiar and similar - whether in this hidden Santorini cove or at home in San Francisco.
