Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology is one of Latin America’s most important museums — a vital space for understanding the depth and diversity of Mexico’s cultural heritage. Opened in 1964, it preserves and celebrates the pre-Columbian civilizations that shaped the country: the Aztec, Maya, Olmec, and Zapotec. The building itself is an icon of modern Mexican architecture — a vast courtyard shaded by a monumental concrete “umbrella,” its single central column carved with mythic reliefs.

Inside, you move through galleries that feel like time slowed down. Among the most famous pieces are the Aztec Sun Stone, a massive calendar disk that encodes the Aztec cosmos, and the colossal Olmec heads carved from basalt. You’ll also encounter the intricate Maya stelae and treasures from the Tomb of Pakal the Great in Palenque — touchstones of an imagination that still defines Mexico’s identity.

Anthropology Museum

If you choose Chapultepec Castle instead of Museo Tamayo, Andrea will arrange to visit this first — so you can make the climb while the hill is still cool and shaded.

Perched high above the city, the castle commands sweeping views of the valley and stands as a symbol of Mexico’s layered history. Built in the late 18th century, it has served many lives — first as colonial palace, then as residence of Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota during the Second Mexican Empire, and later as official home of Mexico’s presidents. Today, it houses the National Museum of History, where rooms are preserved with 19th-century furnishings, imperial artifacts, and murals tracing the country’s struggle for independence and revolution.

Highlights include Maximilian’s ornate chambers, the Hall of Battles, and murals by Diego Rivera and other great Mexican artists. From the terraces, weather/visibility permitting, you can see the city stretching below — green canopy to skyline.

Do keep in mind: the path to the castle is a steady uphill walk of about 15–20 minutes, post the visit, another 15-20 min walk downhill to reach the Anthropology Museum. There will be a brief coffee break at this point.

In this option, you’ll begin at the Anthropology Museum, then, after a coffee break, continue to the Museo Tamayo, Mexico’s leading space for modern and contemporary art.

Founded in 1981 by painter Rufino Tamayo and his wife Olga, the museum was conceived as a bridge — to bring international art to Mexican audiences while celebrating the country’s own creative voices. Designed by Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky, its striking modernist architecture blends into the green contours of Chapultepec Park, creating a space that feels both serene and charged with creative energy.

Inside, you’ll explore Tamayo’s own paintings, where indigenous imagery and cosmic color meet the abstract language of modern art. Option 2: Museo Tamayo

Polanco is one of Mexico City’s most elegant and dynamic neighborhoods, known for its tree-lined streets, luxury boutiques, fine dining, and cultural richness.

After your morning exploration through Mexico’s past and modern expressions, Andrea will take you to a restaurant for an extensive lunch where you'll get to try various dishes representing some of the best of Mexico City cuisine.

From there, you visit the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, a remarkable insitution that preserves the experimental studio and public mission of David Alfaro Siqueiros, one of Mexico’s great muralists. Housed in the artist’s former home and workshop, the building still bears the traces of his process — large-scale murals, technical studies, and the curved walls designed for his “Polyangular” method, meant to let art move with the viewer.

You walk the line between art and activism, between creation and conviction — a fitting conclusion to the day.

The afternoon seeks to tie the day’s themes together: Mexico’s art as memory, power, and reinvention. Over lunch, the continuing conversation with Andrea helps you connect the threads — from the mythology of the Anthropology Museum, to the expression of the Tamayo, to the social conscience embodied in the work for modern artists.

At the Sala de Arte Público, you see how art left the studio and entered civic life. Andrea Bustillos, trained in Madrid, is an art historian and currently Curator in Chief of Fundación Casa Wabi. With a strong focus on contemporary painting, she has curated numerous exhibitions and collaborated with a wide range of artists, from emerging voices to established names. Andrea Villers, educated in Granada, with a master's in curatorial studies, runs a consultancy that develops exhibition projects and advises on cultural strategies.

Italy

Once a nameless patch between Via Prenestina and Via Casilina, Pigneto only began appearing on maps in the early 2000s, following a wave of street art, pedestrian renewal, and urban transformation. But its roots go back much further.

Born in the late 19th century as housing for railway workers and artisans employed in nearby factories, tram depots, and waste facilities, the neighborhood soon became a backdrop for Italian neorealist cinema.

Walking through its early workers’ blocks and the charming “villini” district—small villas built by a railway cooperative between 1921 and 1924—you’ll uncover traces of a layered past.

Gardens and Art Nouveau façades tell a different story from the one often associated with Pigneto today. Now a hub of nightlife and alternative culture, the neighborhood blends its working-class origins with a bohemian spirit. Along the way, a cappuccino and cornetto in a local café will offer a moment to take in the neighborhood’s everyday rhythm.

What sets this experience apart is the chance to explore Pigneto with Irene, a Phd Urban sociologist and researcher who has spent years studying the evolution of Rome’s urban fabric, with a special focus on the city’s first industrial settlements from the late 19th century.

You'll meet Irene in Via del Pigneto 22, Rome

Irene Ranaldi is an urban sociologist and independent researcher based in Rome. She was the first in Italy to publish a study on gentrification comparing her own neighborhood, Testaccio, with Astoria in New York. Her work draws from historical archives and years of field research, focusing on the social transformations of urban districts and the shifting boundaries between city centers and peripheries.

Chile

This 3-hour private experience is divided into a visit to the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art and a relaxed weaving workshop with Flor—a passionate textile artist and entrepreneur from Santiago. Over coffee and cake in a beautiful setting, Flor will introduce you to the art of pin loom weaving: a portable and creative method of weaving using a small frame with pins or nails. After this, you will visit the museum and tour the collection of over 1,000 pieces of Indigenous art, focusing on textiles. 

During the mini workshop, Flor will share simple techniques to start your own woven design—something you can continue during your travels. You’ll begin with a short introduction to Amal’s mission—supporting women from vulnerable backgrounds by training them in the culinary arts. From there, you’ll dive into Moroccan cooking: exploring local spices, learning the stories of each dish, and preparing a traditional feast with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Some recipes are cooked over charcoal, using bellows to control the flame—an immersive detail that reflects Morocco’s culinary heritage.

For centuries in the Algarve, people learned to use local natural resources to produce useful objects mostly for farming. Some of these people are keeping their traditions alive. In this tour, you will meet some of them.

Recognized as one of Algarve’s most traditional villages, Alte's cultural tapestry is woven through its artisans. You’ll explore small, picturesque rural villages and meet with local craftspeople specializing in woodwork, cane, and vegetable fibers. You’ll see their dedication and skill in transforming natural materials into artistic and functional objects.

You'll start your experience at a tiny, 8-seat yakitori shop that is only open for a few hours each night. Established by a husband and wife team nearly 40 years ago, the wife took over running the shop on her own when her husband's health declined several years ago. A long established clientele and 6 consecutive appearances on the annual Top 100 yakitori shops in Tokyo keeps the shop full nearly every night, but also makes it difficult for newcomers to join in.

Your host Aya is a long-time customer of the shop who will introduce you to the owner and customers alike as you enjoy a full course yakitori meal, drinks, and friendly interaction with the regulars. The shop closes at 9:00pm, at which point you and the remaining regular customers help shut down the shop before heading to the nearby Golden Gai area to enjoy a few rounds of drinks and lively conversation.

Establishments like this yakitori shop, with excellent quality food, a long list of regular customers, and few seats can be nearly impossible for visitors to Japan to enjoy on their own. Aya, a foodie who grew up in Tokyo and has arranged a variety of difficult-to-organize experiences for company CEOs and other VIPs, gets you rare access to this cozy shop and an opportunity to mingle with the owner and regulars. Mercato Coperto in Trieste

Yves Saint Laurent gifted Jardin Majorelle to Marrakech, the city that adopted him and his partner in the 60s. They bought an electric-blue villa and its garden, preserved the vision of its original owner (landscape painter Jacques Majorelle), and opened it to the public. 

What makes this feel like a psychedelic mirage in the desert?

Hot pink bougainvillea bursting from terracotta planters. Architectural cacti in lemon-yellow planters. Bamboos growing against cobalt-blue walls. Colorful birds flitting through palm trees. Saint Laurent’s gorgeous collection of Moroccan art, that I totally covet. 

It also has a museum that features jewelry in a setting that our guide Khadija keeps referring to as “a dream”. A dark room with a star-spangled ceiling and low voltage spotlights shining on stunning jewelry sets.

Khadija’s right. Please let all my dreams be like this place.

Psychedelic Mirage

Nafplio, Greece, is home to the Akronafplia Castle Ruins, the oldest fortress in the city, offering breathtaking views and a deep dive into Nafplio’s layered history. Originally built by the Greeks and expanded by the Venetians and Ottomans, the fortress served as a defensive stronghold and later as a prison. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of ancient walls, stone pathways, and hidden towers while enjoying panoramic views of Nafplio’s Old Town, the Argolic Gulf, and the Palamidi Fortress.

1. The ancient stone walls and battlements offer a glimpse into Nafplio’s long history of occupation, blending Greek, Venetian, and Ottoman architectural influences.

Akronafplia Castle Ruins

San Pedro de Atacama is an oasis within the driest desert in the world at the very north of Chile. At more than 8000 feet above sea level, it sits in the center of a ring of volcanoes, the most famous of them being Licancabur. A couple of them still spew smoke.

Volcano climbing, consequently, is a very popular activity here ('why climb the volcanoes?’ - I ask. ‘Because you can!’- says the guide) and we are quickly put on a 4-day program to acclimatize ourselves to the altitude - with progressively higher altitude hikes to prepare us for the final climb. My favorite part of the hikes is the opportunity to capture the colors of the altiplano! That and the thrill of walking through the Mars like topography of the Atacama desert.

Climb Licancabur if you are an experienced climber, Toco or Corona for one day climbs. And you will have bragging rights forever for having climbed a volcano!

If you're looking for an unconventional neighborhood with art galleries, parks to hang out in, and lots of young, trendy people, Newtown is the place for you. I basically spend all my weekends there, drinking coffee, going to book clubs, working at the community kitchen Lentil as Anything, and having a beer at one of the lively bars at night. 

Australians love vintage – which makes Newtown the heaven for vintage clothes, cameras, vinyl records, and much more. I’ve got some new sandals, a polaroid camera, and jewelry, all unique pieces at an amazing price. Worth the hype!

You can easily get there by train, it's just a ride from Town Hall, or simply stay a few days in one of the hostels in Newtown.
