Sanja Matsuri has roots dating back to the 7th century and is considered one of the largest and wildest festivals in Japan. It’s a rare opportunity to capture locals outside of everyday Japanese life — expressive, celebratory, and fully immersed in tradition.

Held on the third weekend of May every year (May 15-17 in 2026) at Asakusa Shrine, the festival takes over the neighborhood for three full days of parades, music, dancing and ritual. At the center are the mikoshi — portable shrines carried on the shoulders of teams of bearers, who shout and sway as they move through narrow streets.

You’ll be drawn to the raw energy of the crowds, the emotion on the faces of the mikoshi bearers, and the visual richness of the traditional wear — from happi coats to tabi socks. The festival offers a sense of controlled chaos that makes for powerful street photography and a deeper understanding of Japanese culture in motion.

This workshop immerses you in the action with an expert photographer by your side to help you capture key moments during the event. Each Mikoshi — portable shrines carried by locals — is paraded through the narrow streets of Asakusa and around the historic Senso-ji Temple district, an area rich in tradition and culture.

The atmosphere is intense, chaotic, and filled with raw emotion — a dream for photographers seeking to capture movement, energy and cultural detail. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to photograph traditional clothing such as happi coats, headbands, and other ceremonial wear. Between the surges of noise and motion, you’ll also find quieter moments to photograph — people preparing to join the procession, families enjoying street food, or festival-goers resting between events.

It’s a rare chance to engage with one of Japan’s most dynamic cultural traditions — up close, in motion, with your lens trained on the emotions that defines it.

He'll have plenty of insights into the culture and energy of the Sanja Matsuri, as someone who’s photographed it many times before.

Italy

Corviale is one of the most ambitious and controversial housing projects ever built in Rome. Conceived in 1972 and stretching for nearly a kilometer, this massive complex—locally known as Il Serpentone (“the big snake”)—was inspired by Brutalist and Rationalist architecture and designed to house 8,500 people.

Walking through Corviale today means entering the layered story of a city that, in the 1970s, faced deep social inequality—when a third of its population still lived in shack settlements. This experience unfolds as a moving urban workshop: you’ll explore the hopes and failures that shaped this space, from its utopian promise of public housing to the long years of abandonment, marginalization, and stigma.

As the district undergoes a slow and ongoing transformation, this walk invites you to question what renewal really means, and how architecture, policy, and community intersect in the making—and remaking—of a city.

This experience offers a rare chance to explore Corviale with a sociologist who has spent years studying the urban stereotypes often attached to Rome’s outskirts. As you walk through the architecture and social fabric of this monumental complex, you’ll gain insight into the hopes and contradictions that shaped it.

The conversation will also open up to a broader reflection on similar projects from the same era—like the Vele di Scampia in Naples, built to house families displaced by the 1980 earthquake. Both Corviale and Scampia were born of urgency and idealism, yet followed different paths. This comparison adds a deeper layer to the walk, encouraging a critical reading of how cities respond to housing crises.

You'll end the experience with cappuccino and cornetto at the only café currently open in the area—a quiet reminder of how isolation, resilience, and change still coexist on the edge of Rome.

She was the first in Italy to publish a study on gentrification comparing her own neighborhood, Testaccio, with Astoria in New York. This is a 3-hour cooking experience at the Amal Women’s Cooperative Center, founded by the remarkable Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen. Rooted in empowerment and inclusion, the experience offers a hands-on introduction to Moroccan cuisine while celebrating the social impact of food.

You’ll begin with a short introduction to Amal’s mission—supporting women from vulnerable backgrounds by training them in the culinary arts. From there, you’ll dive into Moroccan cooking: exploring local spices, learning the stories of each dish, and preparing a traditional feast with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Some recipes are cooked over charcoal, using bellows to control the flame—an immersive detail that reflects Morocco’s culinary heritage.

As your dishes simmer, you'll enjoy a traditional tea paired with homemade cookies. The experience ends with a shared meal; you’ll gather to taste what you've created and connect with members of the Amal team, learning more about their lives, resilience and work.

Unlike many cooking classes in Marrakesh, this experience is private, intimate and timed for an early dinner, featuring a selection of thoughtfully curated dishes to prepare and enjoy. Amal is more than a cooking school—it’s a space of transformation, offering hope and vocational skills to women rebuilding their lives. This experience was created by Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen, founder of the Amal Center—a nonprofit dedicated to empowering women through culinary training and job placement. The session is led by the on-site manager and supported by members of Amal’s original team of chefs—women who helped shape the center and now lead with warmth, confidence, and skill.

You’ll be guided by a small, welcoming team trained in the spirit of Amal’s mission: to use food not only as craft and culture, but as a path to opportunity and connection. Their deep knowledge of Moroccan cuisine and generous hospitality ensure an experience that’s as meaningful as it is memorable.

Argentina

This special experience takes you off the beaten path into the world of a truly local family in Lunlunta, Mendoza. For over 30 years, Juan Marcos Juricich — a softly spoken agronomist and beekeeper — has lived and worked on this small finca with his children, who now help him run the place. Upon arrival, you'll explore the estate with Federico, the youngest son and a winemaker who produces organic wine from grapes lovingly grown on the family plot. You'll sample his latest blends fresh from the tanks and, if you like what you taste, you can even bottle your own wine to take home. 

Through Federico, you will learn about Juan's storied beekeeping and organic honey production methods. There is a chance to try the honey and, depending on the season, hold the hives. To wrap up the experience, Federico will fire up the parrilla for a home-cooked asado, served under the trees with laughter, stories, and wine. This is not a show. It’s a slice of Mendoza life — shared the way it’s always been.

This experience brings you into a real working farm and the home of a family who live off the land, producing wine and honey. You’ll get up close with the bees, understand their significance to the local ecosystem, and learn how Juan, an agricultural engineer and respected apiculturalist, specializes in queen bee breeding and sustainable apiculture.

This is a sensory experience where you will touch the earth where the grapes grow, taste wine straight from the tanks,  dip your fingers in organic honey, and get a feeling for agricultural life in Argentina's Wine Country. By spending time with the Juricich family, you are connecting with people who don’t follow recipes—they follow instincts, seasons, and passion. There are no guides in uniforms and no tired tourist rehearsals. Julieta will be on hand to translate and guide the experience, but the real hosts are the Juricichs. This full-day photographic excursion whisks you away to salty lagoons and a traditional Atacameño town as yet untouched by tourism. Besides learning landscape photography tips and tricks under the eye of a professional photographer, you will float in a saline lake and learn the geological importance of the region's ecosystem.

The day starts at Cejar Lagoon where the high salinity carries you across the surface of the lake without needing to stroke or kick. Swimming is optional yet highly recommended. After drying off, you will visit the Tebenquinche Lagoon to study the salt deposits from the lakeside. There is a relaxed lunch interlude in the town of Toconao where you will tour its main square and side streets. The afternoon concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat in the Chaxa Lagoon where flamingos wade in the shallows for shrimp. Throughout the day, photography remains the priority. 

This is an immersive exploration of the flora and fauna of the Salar de Atacama focusing on photography. Mirko—schooled in the geology and geography of the region—will impart knowledge sharpened by years of living in San Pedro de Atacama. He will explain the fragility of the ecosystems and provide insight into why the Indigenous Licanantay people consider the lagoons and volcanoes sacred. As a professional photographer, he will train your eye to capture the smallest of details and mentor you through the stages of capturing landscapes and close-ups.

The experience also includes the option to swim in Cejar Lagoon; a thrilling experience which fosters a deeper connection with the environment and supports with acclimatizing to this parched landscape. He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. Naples, Italy, is home to the serene Santa Chiara Cloister, a breathtaking oasis of history and artistry hidden within the bustling city. Part of the larger Santa Chiara religious complex, this 14th-century cloister is a masterpiece of Neapolitan craftsmanship, famous for its majolica-tiled columns and benches that depict scenes of daily life. A visit here offers a peaceful retreat, where visitors can admire exquisite frescoes, walk through a tranquil garden, and explore the site's fascinating history.

1. In the center of the cloister, a stunning courtyard features majolica-tiled columns and benches, decorated with vibrant blue, yellow, and green ceramics depicting pastoral and mythological scenes. The tiles, created in the 18th century, are a highlight of Neapolitan artistry.
2. Along the perimeter, ancient frescoes cover the walls, illustrating religious narratives and glimpses of medieval life. Some of these delicate paintings date back to the 14th century.

Santa Chiara Cloister

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the magnificent Hadrian’s Gate, a 2nd-century Roman triumphal arch that serves as the grand entrance to the city’s historic Kaleiçi (Old Town). Built in 130 AD to honor Emperor Hadrian’s visit, this three-arched marble gateway is one of the best-preserved Roman structures in Turkey. With its intricate carvings, towering Corinthian columns, and ancient road beneath, Hadrian’s Gate is a must-see for history lovers and photographers alike.


1. The ornate marble façade, adorned with intricate floral and geometric carvings, showcases Roman craftsmanship at its finest.

2. The three grand archways, framed by towering Corinthian columns, create a dramatic entry into Antalya’s charming Old Town.

3. The original ancient road beneath the gate, visible through a glass panel, offers a glimpse into the footsteps of travelers from nearly 2,000 years ago.

4. The two flanking towers, built at different periods, provide an interesting contrast between Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman architectural influences.

5. The location at the entrance of Kaleiçi makes it the perfect starting point for exploring Antalya’s historic streets, filled with Ottoman houses, boutique shops, and quaint cafés.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon for fewer crowds and the best lighting for photography. Don’t forget to look up—the decorative ceiling of the arches is one of the gate’s hidden details!

Hadrian’s Gate

Namibia

It’s a new day in Sossusvlei. And I am rising towards the sky, timed perfectly with the rising sun, in a wicker basket attached to a hot air balloon. It’s my first balloon ride!

The sand dunes of the Namib desert are taking their time turning orange in the glow of dawn. Our pilot tells us that in Namibia, the only time one can fly a balloon is the sunrise hour. She can’t steer the balloon but she can control the altitude, and depending on the wind channels at each altitude, choose her preferred “course”. 

It’s more peaceful than I imagined. The sound of quiet is unnerving, but no one in the gondola wants to break the peace. In fact, the only sound to be heard is the feverish clicking of cameras. I could get used to seeing the world from this perspective.
