In 1953, Shoghi Effendi, guardian of the Bahá'í Faith, envisioned a temple to unite a continent. By 2016, this dream crystallized into the Mother Temple of South America—and today this is the first stop on your one-day odyssey of Santiago de Chile.

The Bahá'í Temple of Santiago is a structure of nine luminous “petals” each arching skyward like a prayer. Thirty meters high, its glass-clad sails filter daylight into a sanctuary for 600 souls, symbolizing the Bahá'í tenet of oneness.

Santiago Bahá'í Temple

Arriving at Los Dominicos Artisan's Village is akin to walking into a living archive of Chilean tradition. Nestled beside the 18th-century San Vicente Ferrer Church in Santiago's Los Condes district, this enclave of 200 workshops hums with the legacy of Mapuche metalsmiths, colonial leather workers, and mestizo weavers. 

Julio will weave you around the artisan village and introduce you to craftspeople who will share their work and stories. As this is an opportune moment to pick up souvenirs, it is advisable to carry cash (Chilean pesos). 

Trace your fingers over copper cookware forged in ancestral fires, inhale the earthy musk of medicinal herbs, and savor empanadas—a culinary relic of Spain’s Moorish past reborn in the New World.

Los Dominicos Artisan Village

Huelén, the Mapuche called it; "here is the place." 

In 1540, the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia raised his cross upon this volcanic outcrop, thus founding Santiago as a bastion of empire. Today, Santa Lucía Hill's serpentine paths lead past moss-crowned cannons and neoclassical follies with each step a dialogue between Indigenous resilience and colonial ambition. 

After a short climb, you'll pause at the summit and observe how the city sprawls below like a map of its own layered history.  

Santa Lucía Hill (Cerro Santa Lucía) is one of Santiago's most treasured natural landmarks. Paths weave through lush greenery that provide relief to the lungs of Santiaguinos and Santiaguinas before culminating with one of the finest views in the city.

Santa Lucía Hill

Lunch unfolds in Bellavista, Santiago’s most bohemian barrio, where cobblestone streets and kaleidoscopic murals pulse with artistic energy. This eclectic neighborhood thrums with craft breweries, artisan markets, and the legacy of such creatives as Pablo Neruda whose whimsical home, La Chascona, nestles nearby. 

Julio will take you to Galindo, a beloved local institution where the walls buzz with decades of stories and the aroma of Chilean comfort food fills the air. Refresh with a tangy Pisco Sour and savor Pastel de Choclo—a caramelized corn pie steeped in Andean tradition. This one-day history tour of Santiago concludes in the Historic Civic Center where Julio will introduce you to such wonders as:

Immerse yourself in the fragrant world of an aromatic and medicinal herbs farm nestled in the picturesque region of Alentejo, Portugal. This experience invites you to explore the sustainable practices of organic farming and gain insights into the use of Portuguese aromatic herbs. You'll witness the farm's commitment to biodiversity and regenerative agriculture, making it a haven not just for plants but for pollinators like bees. The farm is home to a century-old olive grove and more than 45 plant species, each with unique gastronomical and medicinal properties. 

Rute and João will teach you all about traditional harvesting and drying techniques, plucking herbs straight from the garden to smell, taste and make art with. After the farm tour, you’ll join a Cyanotype printmaking workshop (or similar activity in winter) allowing you to take home your own herbarium. Then sit down for a multi-course lunch based on traditional Alentejo recipes under a shady ash tree or in the cozy greenhouse.

The visit will begin by explaining the organic production method and the agricultural practices used in the farm. As visitors stroll by, they are invited to collect plants to smell and taste, whilst Rute talks about its medicinal properties and culinary uses. After touring the garden, we will visit the natural drying greenhouse, the plant processing room and finally the packaging and storage area. Then, the visitor will learn how to make a herbarium using the Cyanotype technique (or similar activity in winter). Afterwards, there will be a tasting in the middle of the field in a shady spot, of all the products produced on the farm. The Japanese art of visible mending is sashiko, a technique that combines the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi with the always en vogue concept of sustainable practices. In her charming studio among the winding streets of a western Tokyo neighborhood, your host Keiko has been practicing sashiko and teaching students from all over the world the techniques used to make beautiful patchwork on clothing and other textiles.

In this three-hour experience, you’ll enjoy making a Fernwayer exclusive sashiko pouch designed by Keiko as you chat with Keiko and learn about the fascinating art of sashiko mending. The pace of the workshop is relaxed to allow for plenty of one-on-one coaching, and there is a private experience option for those who want a truly exclusive experience. Immerse yourself in the enchanting Carnival of Tempio Pausania, or Carrasciali Timpiesu, on Sunday, February 15. The highlight of this vibrant celebration is a grand parade featuring the whimsical, symbolic marriage of Re Giorgio (the king of Carnevale) and Mannena (a beautiful local woman). 

After meeting your local guide, Gianmario Pedroni, you’ll enjoy a typical lunch learning about the Carnival traditions, before joining the parade at 3 PM. Re Giorgio eagerly awaits Mannena, accompanied by the lively Tempio City Band and a dazzling array of allegorical floats.

This experience begins at Rome’s lively Trionfale market, where you’ll wander through bustling stalls brimming with fresh, seasonal produce. As you sample local delicacies, you’ll select the finest ingredients for the meal ahead, guided by Fulvia’s expert eye and passion for authentic flavors.

From there, Fulvia will welcome you to her charming country house nestled in Olgiata, an exclusive residential area with roots tracing back to a noble estate from the 1600s. You’ll pick fresh herbs and vegetables right from the garden and immerse yourself in the rhythms of Italian home cooking. Together, you’ll prepare traditional Roman dishes, starting with homemade pasta, enhanced by natural wines from local producers, certified Italian extra virgin olive oil, and Parmigiano Reggiano PDO.

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Museo dell'Opificio delle Pietre Dure, translating to "Workshop of semi-precious stones", represents much more than its name suggests. Founded in 1588 by Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici, this museum showcases exquisite objects made from stone and is a leading center for marble inlay and art restoration. Top 3 reasons to visit:
1 - The Opificio delle Pietre Dure's origin lies in the establishment of a court-funded laboratory by Ferdinando I de' Medici. Initially focused on semi-precious mosaic work and inlays, the art form was notably used in the decoration of the Cappella dei Principi in the Basilica di San Lorenzo, the Medici family's final resting place. Over centuries, the workshop evolved, adapting to changing artistic tastes and eventually becoming a premier restoration workshop for a wide range of materials, not just stone inlay​​​​.
2 - The museum displays its collection thematically, focusing on the progression of "commesso fiorentino". You can explore artworks from various periods, starting with the Medici era to the mid-1800s. Tanzania

We spend nearly four amazing hours in the Sand River Circuit in the midst of a spectacular head of grunting wildebeest. Led by “collective intelligence”, these animals complete a 1000 mile loop over the course of a year, and most survive for several seasons of this tough journey! 

When we arrive in the Grumeti Reserves, further south, we find the last few hundred thousand or so wildebeest. Here they are extremely purposeful and move in a single-file. Perhaps they have realized that they are late and will miss out on all the new green grass in the northern plains. They kick up a storm of dust as they move forward with determination - though it is not unusual to see the whole herd running swiftly back if something ahead spooks them. 

It is here that we see the consequences of the ‘battle’ - injured animals or those too weary to complete the journey. This is sad to watch as they will soon become easy prey to the predators. 

Such is the ⭕️ of life.

One Million Wildebeest

Valencia, Spain, is home to the Museo Faller de Valencia, a fascinating museum dedicated to the city’s most famous festival, Las Fallas. This annual event, held every March, is known for its massive, intricate papier-mâché sculptures (ninots), fireworks, and street celebrations. While most of these sculptures are burned at the festival’s conclusion, the museum houses a unique collection of ninots that have been "pardoned" by popular vote, preserving a piece of this spectacular tradition for visitors to admire year-round.

Museo Faller de Valencia

Initially a medieval fortress, it now boasts the Renaissance grandeur of the Salone dei Cinquecento. A living testament to the city's political, artistic, and architectural evolution. Top reasons to visit:
1- The construction of Palazzo Vecchio, attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, began in 1299. Built over the ruins of the Uberti Ghibelline towers and atop a Roman theater, the palace exemplifies the triumph of the Guelph faction. It has served as the seat of the city council, composed of the Guilds of Florence, and even housed Duke Walter VI of Brienne. The architectural design, initially severe and medieval, concealed sumptuous halls and residential apartments​​.
2 - Created during the Republic of Fra' Girolamo Savonarola in 1494, the Salone dei Cinquecento is the most significant room in Palazzo Vecchio. Originally basic and almost devoid of decoration, it was later chosen by Piero Soderini for grand murals by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, depicting the Republic's victories. Although these works were never completed, their initiation marked a high point in Renaissance art. When the Medici returned to power in 1540, they transformed the Salone into a symbol of ducal authority. Giorgio Vasari was tasked with its renovation, elevating the ceiling and adding a coffered structure with forty-two panels. The room's decor glorified the Medici family, replacing the original allegory of Florence with a depiction of Duke Cosimo himself​​​​​​.
Palazzo Vecchio, located at Piazza della Signoria, Florence, is open to the public as a museum. It offers various guided tours, some specifically tailored for families with children.
