A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You'll also discover how these candles have long played a key role in marriage proposals and other local traditions in this village.

Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

After lunch near the coast, the afternoon opens into the Zingaro Nature Reserve, where cliffs and coves invite a slower immersion in Sicily’s raw western landscape. The night is spent along the western coast.
DAY 3 – MARSALA AND THE SALT FLATS | This day is anchored by a guided experience exploring Marsala’s winemaking heritage and the surrounding salt pans. Moving between cellars, open basins, and windmills, the landscape tells a story of labor, tradition, and elemental beauty. Lunch is shared during the experience, and the evening unfolds calmly in Marsala, where you stay overnight.
DAY 4 – AGRIGENTO AND ANCIENT GREECE | The journey shifts east toward Agrigento. The morning is spent exploring the Valley of the Temples at your own pace, where Doric columns rise among almond trees and open terrain. After a day immersed in Sicily’s ancient Greek past, you spend the night in Agrigento.
DAY 5 – RAGUSA IBLA | Travel continues into southeastern Sicily, arriving in Ragusa Ibla. In the early evening, wander through the town’s baroque heart, where warm light settles over stone façades, stairways, and hilltop churches. You settle in for the night in Ragusa, surrounded by one of Sicily’s most atmospheric historic centers.
DAY 6 – ORTIGIA AND MARZAMEMI | A guided walk through Ortigia introduces its markets, streets, and architectural layers, followed by an inland visit focused on olive oil traditions. Tastings and conversation connect food to land and seasonal rhythms. Later, the pace softens in Marzamemi, where time is left to explore the former fishing village. The night is spent near the southeastern coast.
DAY 7 – MOUNT ETNA AND TAORMINA | The final day is anchored by a guided hike on Mount Etna, where volcanic terrain reveals Sicily’s most elemental side. Walking across lava fields and open landscapes offers insight into the island’s geology and living ecosystems, followed by a shared lunch on the slopes. The journey concludes in Taormina, where the final night is spent overlooking the coast and the Ionian Sea.

Sicily, Between Earth and Sky

A road trip itinerary across Sicily, from hill towns and temples to volcano and coastal villages.

In Marrakech, explore the labyrinth of the medina, lined with market stalls and craftspeople, and full of secret places and contradictions. 

Anonymous, windowless, fortress-like walls enclose luxurious riads built around tiled courtyards, complete with fountains and gardens.

Happily, my wonderful guide Khadija of Morocco Private Experience, encourages my curiosity. She leads the way across the medieval labyrinth of chaotic alleyways - to the souks where centuries-old skills continue to flourish. 

I am intrigued about how all the craftspeople are clustered together by trade. We watch a metal craftsman shape a pair of gnawa cymbals. A leatherworker allows me inside his workshop for a better view. There is an entire street of ornate lantern sellers - the bronze-latticed lanterns competing with the palm-leafed roofs of the souks in throwing light-and-shadow patterns all around.

Heart and Souk

Hiking Trail from Fira to Oia
