The great American novelist and journalist Ernest Hemingway spent some of the best days and nights of his life in Madrid. Starting as a young aficionado of the bullfights, he returned as a foreign correspondent for dangerous reporting assignments during the Spanish Civil War, and later shared drinks around town with visiting Hollywood stars of the 1950s. Much of his best fiction was based on these experiences in Madrid and across Spain.

This tour brings Hemingway’s Madrid to life. You will visit some of his favorite Madrid spots, hear stories from his life and times, and hit all the places the man himself would have taken us to.

These include classic beer halls, elegant hotel lounges, cave-like basement bars, and the world’s oldest surviving restaurant. Many of these places were immortalized in his books, and most have barely changed since the author ate, drank, and wrote within their walls.

As a professional writer and a member of the prestigious El Ateneo literary society, your host has lived and breathed Madrid for over a decade. His work on the city’s culture and history includes published essays on Hemingway’s unique relationship with Madrid, making him perfectly placed to bring rich historical color and context to the author’s world here a century ago. This is a 4.5-hour walking tour that showcases Milan's enduring artistic heritage. The tour begins with a visit to the stunningly preserved and often overlooked Ca' Granda, originally a major hospital and now home to Milan’s University. Commissioned by Duke Francesco Sforza in 1456 and designed by architect Filarete, its avant-garde design became a model for European hospitals. Despite wartime damages, its fifteenth-century courtyards and rebuilt eighteenth-century facade remain breathtaking. The tour includes the library and the icehouse. Morocco

This is a scenic day hike across the Kik Plateau, perched at approximately 1,800 meters in the High Atlas Mountains. The trek offers sweeping views over terraced farmland, Lake Takerkoust, and distant peaks, including Mount Toubkal. 

Starting from Asni, the route winds through traditional Berber villages built from earth and stone, where daily life continues much as it has for generations. Along the way, you’ll stop for tea with a local family and enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the plateau, surrounded by olive groves and open sky.

This hike is ideal for those who’ve already seen the classic Atlas mountain routes and want to explore the landscape further while engaging with the local communities. 

The walk takes 5-6 hours with stops and is best done in spring or autumn, when the plateau is green and the light is sharp. Though not technically difficult, there are some steady inclines and exposed terrain, so good walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

The Kik Plateau offers an expansive, open landscape that contrasts with the steeper, more rugged trails of the central High Atlas. Its distinctive limestone outcroppings and gently undulating terrain give you a different kind of hiking experience—one defined by wide horizons and silence. From the plateau, you can take in panoramic views that stretch across the Haouz plains, Lake Takerkoust and the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas.

You’ll walk through traditional Berber villages where adobe homes blend into the hillsides, and farming continues as it has for generations. Because the area sees fewer visitors than other Atlas trails, you’ll engage more directly with both the landscape and the people who live here. Spring is especially vibrant, with wildflowers and green pastures creating a vivid contrast to the dry plains below.

Explore two of Cusco’s most distinctive markets, moving beyond surface-level browsing into conversation, context and culture. Your day begins at San Pedro Market, the city’s long-established central market — designed in 1925 by Gustave Eiffel’s workshop and still serving as a supply hub for locals. Here, aisles of Andean produce, cheeses, tubers, medicinal herbs, and prepared dishes sit alongside stalls of textiles, silverwork and crafts — a commercial ecosystem where Cusqueños shop, trade and share recipes.

From there, you move to Centro Artesanal, a craft market where artisans sell and sometimes create on site. Yessika, an educator with local connections and credibility, facilitates exchanges with vendors, opening conversations for you about materials, techniques, meaning and personal stories.

Argentina

Come and experience what happens in Buenos Aires after hours in a two-hour milonga experience hosted by a professional and globally renowned tango artist. Blending music, dance, social interaction, and traditions, milongas are deeply embedded in modern Porteño culture. The term refers to both the concept and the venue, with milongas typically being held in dance halls and cultural centers. For locals, the milonga represents community whereas for visitors, it’s an immersive cultural experience.

In this experience, Gisela will explain the cultural history of tango and what the dance means in modern Buenos Aires and wider Argentina. She will explain the etiquette and codes of the dance floor and terminology relating to tango—such as Ronda, Tanda, and Cabeceo. There is the opportunity to dance tango if you wish; however, this is optional. You are welcome to simply spectate and soak up the atmosphere from the sidelines. The experience also includes sharing wine and empanadas with Gisela.

Although both experiences are pivotal to the full Buenos Aires experience, milongas are far more intimate and authentic in comparison to watching a tango show. These are social and participatory affairs where regular people go to dance with friends and family. Some dancers are professional, others are just starting out with the steps or seeking to improve. Ultimately, the milonga stands for community and nurturing connection. There are no choreographed routines here, although you may well rub shoulders with professionals indulging in a relaxed night away from the theater!

Milongas are the realm of local residents. However, tourists are welcome to join in and engage with the attendees, many of whom are regulars. Growing up in Buenos Aires, Gisela Vidal danced her first tango at the age of 14. From there, she trained extensively in Tango Salon and Tango Stage style with the finest Argentinian Masters. Besides tango, Gisela has studied contemporary dance, jazz, belly dance, ballet, Argentine folk, and salsa. She has undertaken further tuition in theater and film acting, mime and clown art, and singing.

Gisela has participated in international tango festivals and major events including the opening of the Dakar 2009 in Buenos Aires. She was the choreographer and a stunt dancer for the Tango Infedele Video Clip. During her 20-year career, Gisela has danced and coached in over 40 countries. She co-managed a tango school in Milan and coordinated the Tango Querido School in Tuscany. She launched her own jewelry business in 2018.

A favorite destination for nature lovers and photographers, Ouzoud offers scenic hiking trails, boat rides, and the chance to spot playful Barbary macaques. Whether you're looking for adventure or relaxation, this spectacular waterfall is a must-visit.

2. Views from the cliffside are breathtaking, overlooking the Siurana Reservoir.
3. The village’s small church, Santa Maria de Siurana, is a beautiful historic landmark.
4. Siurana is also famous for its rock climbing, with world-class climbing routes nearby.
5. The surrounding countryside offers hiking trails and opportunities for outdoor exploration.

Medieval Village of Siurana

Fruity, dry, red, white, sweet, sparkling — wine is delicious, and the best way to discover what this powerful potion has to offer is to take a bike tour through the vineyards (yes, on a bike). Mendoza is the best place to choose one of the hundreds of tour operators. 

Mendoza is the most popular wine-growing province in Argentina. And Bodega Tempus Alba has a perfect climate for growing high-quality grapes, and the majestic Andes Mountains provide the backdrop for some of the most beautiful pictures of vineyards to be found anywhere in the world.

Whether you're biking or not, a proper tasting tour will give you enough wine to come home tipsy. That's why I recommend eating well before your tour and taking a break when the magic of wine goes to your head.

I also spent some time hiking in the area, exploring the small villages in the area, and eating the best Argentine empanadas around. A trip for the senses, for sure.

Porto Cathedral, a magnificent structure standing tall in the heart of Porto, Portugal, is an embodiment of architectural evolution and religious significance. This cathedral, known for its blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, offers not only spiritual solace but also stunning views of the city. Top 5 highlights:

1. Porto Cathedral is a striking example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. Its sturdy Romanesque roots are complemented by later Gothic embellishments, including intricate rose windows and elegant cloisters. This blend creates a visually stunning and historically rich structure.

2. Perched atop the Terreiro da Sé, the cathedral offers panoramic views of Porto. The vantage point provides a unique perspective of the city's landscape, stretching from the narrow, cobbled streets to the expansive Douro River.

3. The Gothic cloisters, added in the 14th century, are adorned with azulejos (traditional Portuguese tiles) that depict various religious scenes. These blue and white tiles are not only artistically beautiful but also narrate important biblical stories and local history.

Svalbard & Jan Mayen

On a rainy day, at 78°N, M/S Polar Girl sets out from Longyearbyen to Pyramiden. Even in dreary weather, there is joy in watching the puffins swimming alongside the boat.

Then we step on to the most surreal of ghost towns, Pyramiden, a Russian mining settlement with the northern-most statue of Lenin. 

The decision to abandon in the 90s was sudden. People were given just hours to leave. Signs of a hasty departure are everywhere. Dried up plants. Rusted playground swings. Utensils and stoves left in disarray. Hand-drawn artwork taped on the walls. 

The guide points out the men’s and women’s dorm buildings, euphemistically called London and Paris. Everything is trapped in a 1970s time-warp. A blast from the Soviet past. 

Trust Arktikugol (Arctic Coal), a Russian state owned coal mining company, continues to run this, now as a tourist destination. Perfect for filming a James Bond movie.

Back on the boat, we have views of the glacier and freshly barbequed burgers to cheer us up.

Mining the Past

The National Garden in Athens is a lush green oasis in the heart of the bustling city, offering a serene escape for visitors and locals alike. Spanning 15.5 hectares near Syntagma Square, this historical garden was commissioned by Queen Amalia in the 19th century and features exotic plants, shaded pathways, and tranquil ponds. A haven for relaxation and exploration, it’s a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical charm. 
1. Shaded Walkways wind through towering palm trees, eucalyptus, and other Mediterranean flora, making it a refreshing retreat from the city’s heat.

Running through the heart of the historic center, Spaccanapoli literally means "Naples Splitter" because it slices the city in two. One of the highlights of this district is the Sansevero Chapel, a small yet astonishing space filled with stunning baroque sculptures and mystical symbolism.

1. Sansevero Chapel Museum: This chapel is home to the renowned sculpture *Cristo Velato* (Veiled Christ) by Giuseppe Sanmartino, a breathtaking masterpiece known for its delicate marble veil that seems impossibly real. Wander Through the Old Town (1:00 PM - 2:30 PM). Begin your afternoon with a stroll through Ljubljana's Old Town, focusing on Mestni trg (Town Square) and Stari trg (Old Square). Capture the vibrant street life, historic buildings, and charming shops. Look for interesting angles and compositions that showcase the blend of architectural styles.

Ljubljana Castle (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM). Take the funicular ride to Ljubljana Castle for sunset. Capture panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Alps. The castle offers sweeping landscapes and intricate architectural details. The walk from the castle to Metelkova Mesto, including the cable car ride, can take around 20-30 minutes considering all waits and walking distances.

Metelkova Mesto (6:15 PM - 7:00 PM). End your day at Metelkova Mesto, an autonomous cultural center known for its vibrant street art and alternative scene. Capture the colorful murals and the lively atmosphere, and include the unique architecture and artistic details of the area.

Photo Walk 2: Ljubljana

Namibia

It’s a new day in Sossusvlei. And I am rising towards the sky, timed perfectly with the rising sun, in a wicker basket attached to a hot air balloon. It’s my first balloon ride!

The sand dunes of the Namib desert are taking their time turning orange in the glow of dawn. Our pilot tells us that in Namibia, the only time one can fly a balloon is the sunrise hour. She can’t steer the balloon but she can control the altitude, and depending on the wind channels at each altitude, choose her preferred “course”. 

It’s more peaceful than I imagined. The sound of quiet is unnerving, but no one in the gondola wants to break the peace. In fact, the only sound to be heard is the feverish clicking of cameras. I could get used to seeing the world from this perspective.
