Likely meaning “place of coyotes,” Coyoacán was originally a village founded by the Tepanec people in pre-Columbian times. In 1521, it became the first capital of ‘New Spain’ and remained a settlement distinct from Mexico City until the 1850s. Now located in the south of Mexico City (CDMX), Coyoacán is perhaps best known today for being the home of the Frida Kahlo Museum and the impressive colonial-era architecture. 

Bruno, your guide for this tour, is an artist who grew up in Coyoacán. Through his unique perspective, you’ll gain historical, personal, and artistic context for this beautiful neighborhood. You’ll see some of the area’s most prominent sites, get to know its complex history, and visit a workshop showroom of one of its most exciting local artisans/artists. An Artist’s Coyoacán

Bruno will meet you outside the chapel of San Antonio Panzacola (Av. Universidad 1686, Santa Catarina, Coyoacán, 04010 CDMX). From the Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul): It’s about a 30 minute walk.

Coming from a family of painters of Italian origin, he grew up in Mexico City’s Coyoacán neighborhood and is passionate about Mexican and international contemporary art. He has a passion for travelling and spent many years couchsurfing and meeting people across Europe and Asia. He is a member of the Quinto Piso Collective, composed of numerous contemporary artists working in CDMX. This collective works to support each other and promote Mexico City’s exciting contemporary art scene.

The village of Bosa, with its colorful houses, rises between the Temo River and the rolling hills of Planargia, about 50 km from Alghero. You will walk through its streets at sunset, while the sky is tinged with shades of blue and orange, and the air is filled with the scent of the sea.

Streets and Shores of Ericeira

The Mafra Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the most important Baroque structure (and the largest building) in Portugal. It was commissioned by King Dom João V in the 18th century, funded by the wealth coming from Brazil. The complex is organized around central interior courtyards, where the Basilica, Convent, and Palace meet and intersect. This architectural complex represents one of the artistic, architectural, and cultural highlights of Portugal.

The Mafra Palace-Basilica-Convent is unique for its scale, sumptuousness, and quality of architecture and decoration. Some highlights include the Infirmary, the Throne Hall, and the Library, which holds about 35,000 rare books. The Basilica is adorned with a unique collection of Italian Baroque statues (the largest outside Italy), six historical pipe organs, and two carillons composed of nearly 100 bells.

The building is also a very important landmark in Portuguese history. It originally reflected the wealth and power of King João V but also represents the lives of several other kings who spent time there, in the surrounding gardens or the nearby royal hunting park. King Manuel II spent his last night in Portugal in one of its rooms before leaving the kingdom forever after the fall of the monarchy in 1910, departing from the nearby Ericeira village beach.

The Cerco Garden stands on one of the flanks of the Convent-Palace. Initially designed and inspired by Versailles, only a small part of the garden was completed. Cerco Garden serves as the perfect transition between the vast, walled former Royal Hunting area, known as Tapada Real, and the monumental Convent-Palace. This private, 4-hour ceramics experience invites you to create a decorative piece while enjoying a few glasses of wine and empanadas. Mendoza is as celebrated for its thriving arts community as it is for its world-renowned Malbec wines. You will learn about the artisan process of ceramics, from modeling to decoration, culminating in a unique piece to take home as a reminder of your time in Mendoza. This may be a plate or a cup; Lucila will discuss the options with you prior to starting.

Lucila Quevedo is a ceramic artist from Mendoza who has been teaching classes in her workshop for seven years. She is passionate about the craft of ceramics and focuses on artisanal techniques. Through her work and teaching, she seeks to transmit the essence of this art form and inspire others to explore their creative side.

Bahía de Kino is a peaceful fishing town on the Sea of Cortez. You’ll arrive by private car after crossing the Sonoran Desert with your local guides from Hermosillo, ready to immerse yourself in the culture of the Seri, or Comcáac, who have called this region home for around 2,000 years.
