This 6.5-hour, truly exclusive experience intertwines poetry, cuisine, and dialogue in a highly personalized setting in Santiago, Chile. Starting with a sensory journey through the La Vega and Mercado Central food markets, you will procure the freshest ingredients for the grand finale. But before then—a rendezvous at the former address of Chile's most famous denizen of the past. Now a museum, La Chascona was where Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda worked magic both as a writer and gourmand.

The main course of the experience is served at the home of your host in Barrio Bellavista, where the morning's haul is transformed into Caldillo de Congrio (conger chowder), accompanied by premium Chilean wines. This aromatic fish soup was the dish Neruda prepared to welcome guests at his private residences in Santiago, Valparaíso, and Isla Negra. In fact, you'll be conjuring Caldillo de Congrio Nerudiano, true to the poet’s take on this time-honored recipe.

Much like Neruda, Julio is a gourmand who delights in feeding family and friends. His experience is curated to take you through every stage of the process—from chatting with a fishmonger who has run her stall for 50 years in Santiago’s oldest fish market to sautéing the oil and layering flavor into the chowder. During the cooking process, Julio will recite Neruda’s Ode to Conger Chowder—a lyrical poem rich in rhythm and emotion that also doubles as a step-by-step guide to preparing the poet’s signature dish.

Beyond the authenticity of speaking with longtime vendors, touring La Chascona with a Neruda expert, and preparing a meal infused with verse, this experience is marked by warmth. As Julio works his magic, you’ll hear how he first discovered a love for cooking while helping his mother in the family kitchen. While sipping coffee brewed in the moka pot he inherited from her, you’ll learn how Julio himself once crossed paths with Chile’s most prolific writer—in this very barrio.

The Japanese art of visible mending is sashiko, a technique that combines the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi with the always en vogue concept of sustainable practices. In her charming studio among the winding streets of a western Tokyo neighborhood, your host Keiko has been practicing sashiko and teaching students from all over the world the techniques used to make beautiful patchwork on clothing and other textiles.

In this three-hour experience, you’ll enjoy making a Fernwayer exclusive sashiko pouch designed by Keiko as you chat with Keiko and learn about the fascinating art of sashiko mending. The pace of the workshop is relaxed to allow for plenty of one-on-one coaching, and there is a private experience option for those who want a truly exclusive experience. You’ll leave Keiko’s workshop with a comfortable grasp on sashiko techniques, and the tools and materials needed to continue practicing at home.

With her many years of experience as a teacher and practitioner of the art of sashiko, Keiko introduces this traditional craft with clear instructions in a relaxing manner that creates a foundation for guests who want to continue practicing it in the future.

Türkiye

This Jun-Sep experience explores Didyma after dark, when the Temple of Apollo opens for night museum hours and the site is illuminated. Departing from Izmir (or Kuşadası) or Bodrum around 16:30, you travel by private vehicle for 90 min to Didim for an early dinner — simple dishes timed to fit the schedule — while your host frames the myths and history you’re about to see. 

From 19:30–21:30, you enter the sanctuary and walk through one of antiquity’s most imposing Ionic temples which Strabo, the Ancient Greek geographer once described as a “temple within a forest of columns.” 

Hatice — a licensed guide, storyteller and culture expert — walks you through the colossal Ionic plan, unfinished cella enclosure, Medusa reliefs, column drums and bases and the Sacred Way that once linked Didyma to Miletus.  “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

How Not to be Templed Out.

Pick out the must-see’s in the mini-circuit (Bayon, Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm in that order), then pick two temples in the grand-circuit (Preah Khan and Pre-Rup are my favorites), and one that requires a car (Banteay Srei or Beng Melea). 

Add some climbing at dawn - at Phnom Krom and Phnom Bakheng - as the sunrises here will sustain you for a whole year of waking up late. 

Pace yourself over three to four days.

Temples and Temples

The Alhambra in Granada is a stunning example of Moorish architecture and one of Spain's most iconic historical sites. This vast complex, which includes the Nasrid Palaces, the Alcazaba fortress, and the Generalife gardens, served as the royal residence of the Nasrid sultans. Frida Kahlo Casa Azul

Naples, Italy, is home to the extraordinary Sansevero Chapel, a hidden gem of Baroque art and mystery, located in the heart of the historic center. This small yet breathtaking chapel is most famous for the Veiled Christ, a marble masterpiece by Giuseppe Sanmartino that astounds visitors with its delicate, lifelike depiction of Christ covered in a translucent shroud. The chapel, commissioned by the enigmatic Prince Raimondo di Sangro, is also filled with symbolic sculptures, intricate decorations, and scientific curiosities, making it one of the most fascinating attractions in the city.

1. In the center of the chapel, the Veiled Christ stuns visitors with its remarkable realism, as the finely sculpted marble veil appears almost weightless over Christ’s lifeless body. The level of craftsmanship makes it one of the most admired sculptures in the world.

Veiled Christ

Faroe Islands

I’m seduced by the untouched beauty and drama of the Faroe Islands. Driving into Tórshavn, I witness a rare Faroese sight.

The ocean is bright red. The beach is packed with onlookers. It’s a grindadráp, a pilot whale hunt. Heavily regulated, it’s being carried out with process perfected over millennia. A local couple points out their son to me, he is on one of the boats — “unless we send a boat, we won’t get our share of the whale meat.”

When a school of pilot whales is sighted, boats gather around and slowly drive them towards the chosen bay or beach, for it’s illegal to kill the whales in the open sea. This time, there are about two hundred of them. Every bit of them will be consumed or used — and none can be sold.

I’m shocked, outraged, fascinated, caught up in the excitement and terribly conflicted. As a traveler, I respect — and seek to understand — culture and tradition. And the Faroese are holding on to this one — as it symbolizes for them their relationship with the sea.
