What is this?
This walking tour introduces San Miguel de Allende through two lenses: the historic city and its creative spirit. With a local expert who grew up here, you learn how the town evolved from a colonial settlement into one of Mexico’s most distinctive cultural destinations.
As you move through the historic streets, your host shares stories behind the colonial architecture, public spaces, and daily rhythms. Along the way, you pause for an unhurried lunch at a traditional Mexican restaurant, with time for conversation and local insights about about life in San Miguel.
The experience then shifts toward the city’s creative life through curated visits to a restored industrial factory now filled with artist studios, a bustling artisan market where traditional crafts are sold, and a contemporary gallery presenting new work by local artists. Your host will introduce you to both traditional artisans and contemporary creators whose work reflects the creative energy that defines San Miguel today.
What makes this unique?
San Miguel de Allende’s artistic reputation did not emerge by chance. After the mid-20th century, art schools and international students transformed the town into a vibrant creative community where traditional craft traditions exist alongside contemporary art and design.
This curated tour is oriented around rare access to local artists and craftspeople, a balance of history and art, and insight into the techniques, inspirations, and stories behind the artists’ work. You’ll travel from monumental sites such as the Jardín Allende to encounters in studios and galleries. These exchanges provide a perspective on the city that most visitors never experience.
Because your host was raised in San Miguel, the day unfolds through local knowledge and conversation rather than a fixed script. Monumental landmarks, artisan spaces, and working studios are approached as parts of the same living city — revealing how history, creativity, and daily life continue to shape San Miguel today.
What is the profile of the host?
Martha Fernanda (Champi) is a trilingual Mexican photographer, travel creator, and local guide born and raised in San Miguel de Allende. She studied film and visual storytelling at the Vancouver Film School and later returned to her hometown, where she now shares the city through photography and cultural experiences.
San Miguel holds a particular balance for Martha: deeply local and rooted in tradition, yet cosmopolitan, creative, and constantly evolving. She introduces visitors to her town through an approach grounded in slow travel, cultural respect, and meaningful connection.
Martha believes travel is about more than seeing beautiful places — it’s about understanding their layers, rhythms, and stories. Through her experiences, she encourages travelers to explore San Miguel’s history, arts scene, cultural traditions, and quieter corners of the city.
