This experience offers a full immersion in the world of washi — Japanese handmade paper — woven into Kyoto’s architecture, rituals and daily life. For over a 1000 years, this humble material has carried story, structure and spirit across generations. Kyoto has long been a center of washi artistry, supplying paper to temples, palaces and traditional arts.

You’ll begin in the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, where you’ll learn about plants that form the base of washi and how the fibers are transformed by hand. From there, Emilie will guide you to artisan studios, offering a close look at traditional techniques and the lived artistry behind them.

Later, you’ll step inside a historic noble residence, where washi-lined walls and shoji screens show how paper softens light and defines space in Japanese design. The walk ends in a curated selection of shops in Demachiyanagi offering handmade washi — a way to see the best in the craft today, and an invitation to take home a piece of enduring culture.

Washi may be everywhere in Kyoto, but without context, it’s easy to overlook. Emilie, a researcher of traditional crafts, helps you see what’s hidden in plain sight — how paper threads through rituals, interiors, and craftsmanship. Her fluency in the language, culture, and material open doors you wouldn’t even know to knock on, translating not just words but values, processes, and small gestures. Washi, The Texture of Kyoto

A four-hour private guided experience through Kyoto with Emilie, including curated visits to washi-related sites. 

Where possible, you’ll walk between stops, as the city itself is part of the experience. Short taxi rides and any ticket or entry fees (if applicable) are covered.  

A stop for a drink and small snack is included, in a space where washi plays a role in either the interior design or presentation.

Chile

This full-day bird watching excursion is led by a naturalist guide and conservationist who surveys the local population of avifauna and knows all the best spots to encounter resident and migratory species. After leaving San Pedro, you first drive south towards Jere Canyon (Quebrada de Jere) where tamarugo conebills, oasis hummingbirds, white-winged doves, and plain-mantled tit-spinetails dwell. There are brief stops along the way in oases frequented by birds. The morning concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat's Chaxa Lagoon, where you will encounter three of the world's six flamingo species.

Upon return to San Pedro, you'll enjoy a relaxed lunch with Valeria in a local restaurant before driving north to highland canyons and wetlands. At the Machuca, Putana and Jauna wetlands, you will scout for the diademed sandpiper plover: any birder's crown jewel in the Altiplano. Vicuñas and vizcachas are usually spotted, and there is always the hope of spying Andean cats and culpeo foxes.

This avifauna safari is designed exclusively for birders, ornithophiles, and twitchers at all stages on their mission to encounter the world's rarest and most unique species. It all starts with the host, Valeria, who is a fountain of knowledge about the Atacama's fauna and whose passion for the desert's fragile ecosystems is unbridled. Valeria knows that birding requires patience, so her tour is delivered at a leisurely pace with plenty of time for you, the birder, to experience the joy of mindful discovery. 

While locating the diademed sandpiper plover is a major component of the experience, all birds encountered in this region have their charms. At the Chaxa Lagoon, you will have the pleasure of seeing the Andean, Chilean, and James flamingos wading side by side for the shrimp responsible for their rosy feathers. This is also a hotspot for puna plovers and Andean avocets. Visiting quieter canyons and wetlands allows for a mindful connection with birds and studying their behaviors.

Valeria Heindl is a passionate naturalist and conservationist who has resided in San Pedro de Atacama for over a decade. While operating her tour business, she has fostered deep roots in the community. Her expertise lies in the region's natural history, from its intricate geology and flora to fascinating wildlife and, in particular, its avifauna. This is enhanced by her active participation in local conservation and environmental education projects. 

Most recently, Valeria has participated in the Flamingo and Shore Birds Survey, the Diademed Sandpiper Plover Survey, and an ongoing CONAF raptor monitoring project in the Moon Valley. She has also deepened her knowledge by attending ROC (La Red de Observadores de Aves y Vida Silvestre de Chile) courses in Bird Physiology, Pelagic Birds, and Shore Birds Conservation. Embarking on regular adventures of her own, Valeria has seen 1,195 bird species thus far (almost 10% of the world's total). 

Portugal

This hands-on workshop offers rare access to one of Portugal’s most endangered crafts: Bisalhães black pottery, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. In a small mountain village north of Vila Real, just a few remaining artisans keep this tradition alive.

You’ll step into a rustic, working atelier to see how local earth, fire, and ancestral technique come together to form these matte-black pieces. After a live demonstration of traditional hand-molding, you’ll take a seat at the wheel to shape your own, guided step-by-step by the master potter.

If weather allows, you’ll also witness the outdoor firing process—where pine needles and broom branches are used to stoke the open-air kiln. This method turns raw clay into its distinct black finish, a transformation unchanged for generations. Your completed piece is then fired, carefully packaged, and shipped to your home — a tactile memory of Douro, shaped by your own hands.

In Bisalhães, black clay pottery has been shaped by hand for centuries—but today, only a few master potters still practice this endangered art. This experience offers rare, personal access to one of them, in a setting far from the commercial workshops of larger towns.

Inside the workshop, you’ll learn how the clay is prepared, shaped and dried using traditional tools—some passed down through families—and how the outdoor kilns, fueled by pine and broom, are smothered post-fire with moss, earth and sand to lock in the signature matte-black finish. The method is entirely natural: no glaze, no paint, just earth and fire.

Under the artisan’s guidance, you’ll craft a piece using age-old techniques, then watch as it’s hardened by fire into a singular object. First documented in 1709 and inscribed in 2016 on UNESCO’s Urgent Safeguarding List, this practice is at risk—but alive. This walking tour in Barcelona’s Eixample district lets you in on the secrets of Modernisme, and the cultural renaissance that set out to make Barcelona the most ‘modern’ city in Europe. The city of Iwatsuki, just outside of Tokyo, is one of Japan's major centers for Ningyo doll production. Much more than simple toys, the dolls are celebrated as works of arts created by master artisans preserving an important aspect of Japanese heritage. Your guide, Hiro, will introduce you to the world of Japanese dolls starting with a curated tour of a doll museum, where he will explain the history of ningyo dolls and their production process. 

After the museum, you'll enjoy lunch at a long-established traditional Japanese restaurant before heading to the Ifuji Ningyo Shop, where you will learn the traditional technique of "kimekomi," pressing fabric into grooves carved in the doll's body to create clothing. Your teacher will be a master artisan who has been maintaining the craft as part of many generations of craftspeople in Iwatsuki. Take your work home with you as a special souvenir.

Finally, you'll visit a local doll shop for more up-close viewing and shopping for ningyo dolls.

This full day experience gives you a rare opportunity to be immersed in the world of Japanese dolls, learning how they are made and getting a chance to participate in the process, and viewing works of art in a museum. This sunset photography experience chases the light through breathtaking viewpoints of Cappadocia’s otherworldly terrain, capturing the sky as it shifts from gold to blue to dusk. It begins with a hotel pick-up and a drive to the Red Valley, where the slopes of Red and Rose Valleys flare with color in the low sun. Shadows stretch. Stone turns to fire. Departing from and returning to the city of Valparaíso, this full-day wine experience takes you to three wineries in the Casablanca Valley. The youngest wine region in Chile is nourished by the cool breezes and morning fogs of the Humboldt Current, thus producing crisp Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. 

Al Ramirez, a Porteño Sommelier, will accompany you for the entire day. The outing starts with a blind tasting of four wines at the first winery. At the second estate, you will enjoy four organic wines paired with four cheeses. The third and final stop concludes with a four-course pairing lunch. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
