Día de Muertos is a celebration of memory, artistry, and belonging. Offered daily from October 29 to November 2, the experience traces the festival’s rhythm from creation to commemoration: from flowers and food, to processions and light.

You’ll begin in the market, where marigold and pan de muerto fill the air with color and scent. Paco guides your eye to texture and detail—petals in sunlight, powdered sugar on hands, vendors arranging altars of fruit and candles.

In this first stop, Paco leads you through the market. You photograph flower sellers, fruit vendors, and families buying offerings. You’ll learn to frame texture and rhythm — petals in baskets, powdered sugar on hands, the soft smoke of copal rising. The market is more than supply; it’s the pulse of the celebration.

Rather than rush through, Paco helps you slow down — reading light, finding human gestures, and engaging respectfully with local vendors. You begin to understand how the altar, the food, and the flower are all forms of remembrance — each color and scent carrying meaning.

Building the Ofrenda

Choose your expression — a traditional face-painting session with a local artist or the chance to craft and wear a hand-painted mask, both rooted in local imagery and symbolism. You’ll need to send your choice in advance to Paco at the time of booking so he can arrange a local artist accordingly. Keep in mind – slots fill up quickly.

After lunch, Paco arranges a 30-minute session led by local artists. You may opt for subtle, symbolic face painting inspired by La Catrina and local floral motifs, or for a handmade mask that draws from Oaxacan papel maché and folk imagery. Both are created with cultural context, genuine local artists, real connection.

These sessions honor tradition. The artist explains the symbolism — how the calavera celebrates continuity, not death. The designs are personal, thoughtful, and made to be part of the calenda, not to dominate it.

Japan

In juxtaposition to the prim and proper atmosphere of traditional Kyoto are the Tachinomi, casual bars invented for the Japanese blue and white-collar crowds to let their hair down. Although historically popular in working-class areas of Osaka, tachinomi have more recently appeared around Kyoto, some with a twist of the local culture ingrained in their Osaka roots.

Your experience begins with your expert guide giving you a primer on the history and evolution of tachinomi standing bars in the Kansai area, as well as some tips on how to fit in with the locals. From there, he will take you to some of his favorite tachinomi, from rooftop cocktail bars to racous hole-in-the-wall establishments, introducing you to patrons, staff, and owners alike.

What makes this experience truly special is the host Nesime, a master artist who has been practicing Ebru for over a decade. You’ll be welcomed into her private gallery. She will guide you through the technical foundations—holding special brushes, applying pigments, using the “tekne” (water tray), and shaping intricate patterns—explaining the symbolism of each design. You’ll learn how Ebru uses natural pigments that float on a thickened liquid, allowing for a unique interplay of color and texture. This experience takes you to Barcelos, a historic town in northern Portugal known as the birthplace of the iconic Barcelos Rooster and a living center of Portuguese folk art. About an hour’s drive from Porto, Barcelos has long been recognized for its vibrant crafts scene, particularly pottery.

DAY 3 – SANTIAGO TO LOS ANDES | In the morning, you pick up your rental car and drive northeast toward Los Andes, gradually entering vineyard landscapes and Andean foothills. The short drive introduces the shift from city to mountain terrain. In the evening, a guided stargazing experience explores how Indigenous cultures interpreted the night sky, adding a new dimension to the landscape around you.
DAY 4 – ACROSS THE ANDES TO MENDOZA | Today is dedicated to the crossing itself. You follow the Caracoles Road, a series of dramatic switchbacks climbing toward the Chile-Argentina border. Stops at Laguna del Inca and viewpoints along the way reveal the scale of the Andes, and Aconcagua appears as you descend into Argentina. After border formalities, you arrive in Mendoza by early evening and settle into your new base.
DAY 5 – MENDOZA WINE AND CRAFT | The morning begins with a guided wine and olive oil experience in the Mendoza countryside, combining tastings with a relaxed seasonal lunch. In the evening, you join a ceramic workshop with a local artisan, blending storytelling, hands-on creation, and regional wine. The day moves between rural estates and creative city life.
DAY 6 – ANDES FOOTHILLS AND GAUCHO TRADITION | You drive west toward Cacheuta, following the Mendoza River into the Andes foothills. The scenery becomes rugged and expansive before you return to Mendoza. In the late afternoon, a guided horseback ride into the Andes introduces gaucho culture, ending with a sunset gathering and traditional meal by the fire.
DAY 7 – MENDOZA TO BUENOS AIRES | After breakfast, you transfer to Mendoza Airport for your flight to Buenos Aires. The short journey across the Andes brings you from vineyard country to Argentina’s capital, where the next chapter of your travels begins.

Someone described #Churchill as “the warmest coldest tundra town”. It is a friendly, curious town. It also claims to have 300 days of northern lights. 

Basically, if you happen to be in Churchill on a clear night, prepare to wake up, dress up in layers (quickly), and be enthralled. 

Last Sunday night, when most had turned back in after what looked like an “average” aurora display, we waited and were rewarded with lovely green ribbons and curtains.

At the close of the turtle hatching season, in January this year, when only a handful of nests remained, we assisted Mel Tennant, fondly known as The Turtle Man, in releasing 54 newly hatched Hawkbill Turtles into the ocean.

The turtle hatchlings — incredibly — found the ocean on their own, with no help or nudging from us. How do they know where to go and how to swim right after they are hatched? Well, they do. Sea turtles are born with the instinct to move toward the brightest direction.

The Oracabessa Bay Sea Turtle Project, under Mel’s extraordinary leadership, provides incubation support and the safe release of these endangered creatures.
