The Stories of Cádiz

This experience is curated for a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8 people to accommodate base costs and logistics. After a picnic lunch in a park near the mosaics of Puente Alto, you will travel to the Universidad de Chile metro station which houses the mosaic, "Alas de Amistad". 

Inaugurated in 2024, this mural celebrates the bicentennial of friendship between the United States and Chile. It was a collaboration with the United States Embassy in Chile. As one of the co-artistic directors, Shannon will reveal how it came to be and talk you through the symbolism.

We will stop and admire the mosaic on the front of the Municipality Building of Puente Alto. This is where Shannon participated in an international mosaic event in 2014. This was organized by the artist Isidora Paz Lopez – the same artist who organized the rest of the project we have viewed. Nearby, we also have the opportunity to view the spectacular mosaics at the end of Puente Alto’s monumental metro project.

Shannon McEvoy participated in the mosaic installations on the Municipality Building in Puente Alto in a two-week international invitational event in 2014. Due to Shannon’s first-hand experience, this part of the tour is where you will hear some of the most in-depth stories behind the mural process.

We conclude our artist-guided viewing of the stunning mosaics in Puente Alto.

Municipality of Puente Alto 

Our first stop is near the first metro station in Puente Alto. From here, we will follow the route of the metro line from the outside. Along the way, we will admire a total of 4 metro stations and 84 monumental pillars adorned with the beautiful mosaics of Isidora Paz Lopez and her team from the 2014 intervention. 

Covering over 4,000 square meters, this project is considered the largest mosaic intervention in Latin America and the third largest in the world. We will walk at a leisurely pace with lots of stops to take photos. Water, electrolytes, and snacks will be provided for the walk.  

Our mosaic trek concludes at the Municipality Building of Puente Alto.  

Shannon McEvoy participated in some of the mosaic installations in Puente Alto and is knowledgeable about the others. Her walking tour focuses on the stories behind the murals: how artists collaborate and what public art represents to a local community and the overall identity of a city.

Originally from Minnesota, multimedia artist Shannon McEvoy studied in Viña del Mar in 2010. The country and its people left a lasting impression on her, and she quickly returned after graduation. Inspired by the street art of Valparaíso, she incorporated Chilean muralism into her undergraduate Honors Thesis and later became a muralist herself.

Shannon has lived in Chile for over 10 years, where she teaches English and creates murals—though her talents extend far beyond. She also paints, sketches, makes ceramics and jewelry, designs her own clothes, and experiments with photography. As an artistic director, she has overseen several monumental public art installations in Santiago and beyond.

Passionate about both art and language, Shannon sees them as powerful tools for self-expression and meaningful connection. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she also speaks basic Portuguese.

Chilean textile entrepreneur Florencia “Flor” Campos Correa has curated this experience as a cultural commentary on Chilean/Andean handcrafts and an opportunity to connect with modern makers in Santiago. 

It starts with a relaxed hike up the grassy slopes of Cerro Calán in Las Condes for panoramic views of the modern city and surrounding Andes — the birthplace of Chilean textile crafts. During this, Flor explains artisanal culture and discusses how her own methods fuse Indigenous, modern, and global techniques. This gentle walk takes around an hour and is suitable for most fitness levels. 

The second part of the experience takes place at Los Dominicos Craft Village, a traditional heritage zone and cultural hub dating to 1544. Flor will enable conversations with artisans and provide cultural context to their methods. She will help you buy trinkets typical of Chile: textiles, ceramics, woodwork, copperware, lapis lazuli and Mapuche silver. There is one stop for empanadas in the market.

Flor's experience is an opportunity to learn about Chilean textile culture in a natural setting and connect with authentic artisans. 

The first part of the activity takes place in one of Flor’s favorite hiking spots in the upscale Las Condes district, where you'll learn about the cultural significance of handmade crafts to a backdrop of nature and urban. As a textile industrial designer who has traveled extensively around Chile, Flor is a fountain of knowledge about her country and its makers; she looks to the past while embracing innovation in her line of work.

The rest of the experience is spent meandering the stalls of the famous Los Dominicos Craft Village. Artisans set up workshops in these adobe structures during the 1970s/1980s which now function as a shopping hub with informal demonstrations. Flor's bilingual presence facilitates discussion and creates a richer, more immersive experience. She will explain the significance of materials and motifs displayed at these stalls.

Florencia Campos Correa, or Flor, is a Chilean-Spanish textile designer and author based in Santiago. Her business, Ullvuna, is dedicated to portable pin loom weaving kits which are available globally. Much of Flor's inspiration comes from her passion and appreciation for Chilean culture and people. She deeply admires the landscapes and nature as well as the ancient fables she absorbed as a child while traveling every corner of Chile by caravan with her family.

Flor has authored several books packed with vibrant pattern inspiration and projects. Her nature motifs are translated into floral crochet designs published in a British magazine and she has penned a children's story which inspires creativity and entrepreneurship in the youngest of budding designers. 

Morocco

This experience invites you to contribute your skills to the local community in Fes while also learning directly from a diverse network of local experts. In collaboration with artisans, cultural centers, and community-led organizations, you’ll spend a few hours working on ongoing projects in areas such as design, architecture, cooking, music, urban planning, financial advice, marketing, or small business strategy for startups or cultural initiatives, depending on your skills and expertise. 

You’ll gain access to new working environments, develop a deeper understanding of local Fassi approaches to business and enterprise, and engage with how things operate—challenges and possibilities included.

You might assist in brainstorming ideas for the restoration and preservation of an ancient building or a public space in the Fes Medina, help with the marketing plan for a startup NGO, provide financial advice to a small business, or give a short talk to a local group on your area of expertise.

This experience is a private tour of Galería Artkinson, one of Valparaíso's most intriguing independent galleries focused on urban art and contemporary expression. Named for its proximity to the beloved Paseo Artkinson walkway, the gallery is co-managed by a quintet of local artists each with their own specialty across painting, engraving, sculpture, and jewelry craft. Each artist has a different style which makes for one of the most eclectic experiences in Chile's Capital of Culture.

This private viewing experience is hosted by one of the five artists. It consists of an in-depth description of the original works showcased in the gallery and the studio, where you'll learn about the different materials, symbols, and ideas behind each piece. Moro "Newenki" Pichilaf specializes in wood engraving, stencil art, and painting alongside mural art with fellow graffiti artists Don Peluca and Cuellimangui. Fernanda González works with plasticine installations whereas Klaus Tordo is a master at metal engraving and the botanical practice of Kokedama.

The host of the experience depends on the date booked. In most cases, you will meet at least one further resident artist during the visit besides the host artist.

Kathrin Vogel, originally from Germany, found her home in Santorini more than two decades ago while visiting for work. Her passion for the island continued to grow, and she decided to share its enchantment with travelers.

She is the force behind SantoriniExperts, a group of passionate local women who share their years of knowledge in crafting exceptional itineraries that showcase the island's extraordinary beauty, fascinating history, and vibrant culture. This 1.5-hour experience takes place at CasaPlan—a collaborative workspace for artists living in the city of Valparaíso and the wider Fifth Region of Chile. Located in El Plan (the flat part of the city), CasaPlan features a printmaking workshop, two galleries dedicated to contemporary Chilean art, and a cafe. Hosted by one of CasaPlan's resident mixed-media artists, Marcela Rodriguez, you will enjoy a private tour of the printmaking workshop, witness a lithography demonstration, and engage with creatives over their latest projects. 

Traditionally using limestone slabs, lithography is a printing technique that works on the immiscibility of oil and water. Marcela will also accompany you to the two visual art shows—explaining the concept behind each installation. In the instance that one of the artists exhibited is available in the workshop, Marcela will facilitate a cultural exchange with them. The experience includes coffee/tea and a slice of cake in the cafe and a print to take home.

CasaPlan is a cultural hub in Valparaíso that brings together art, food, education, and hospitality in a beautiful historic space. It was founded by the female artist Javiera Moreira and the architect Antonia Jarpa to serve as a printmaking workshop where established artists nurture emerging creatives through courses and residency programs. Being located on the periphery of Valparaíso's typical tourist trail means the venue retains a community vibe and is primarily visited by artists and local residents. 

Although cafe-goers glimpse the artists at work in the open-concept studio, Marcela's experience is the only means of interaction. As one one the few bilingual creatives, Marcela can facilitate conversations with the resident artists and lead a fascinating dialogue about Chile's modern art scene. Marcela will also escort you to the two art shows which often exhibit work by CasaPlan's resident artists. She will provide insightful commentary on the pieces, to be continued over coffee.

Meet Marcela in CasaPlan on Avenida Brasil, in Valparaíso, Chile. Upon arrival, make yourself known to a member of staff at the cafe and they will call Marcela from the workshop.

Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist who grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis in the US and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico, at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at CasaPlan in Valparaíso.

He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It features more than 20 rooms including Maximilian’s bedroom, designed like a ship’s cabin, and the grand Throne Room. 2 - Miramare Castle has witnessed significant historical moments, including the tragic story of its original inhabitants. Archduke Maximilian lived in the castle for only a few years before moving to Mexico, where he was appointed emperor and later met a tragic fate. The castle’s interiors reflect the life and tastes of this period, with poignant artworks like "The Last Moments of Maximilian" adding depth to the visit.

Santa Maria del Mar, known as the "Cathedral of La Ribera" in Barcelona, is a sterling example of pure Catalan Gothic architecture, distinguished by its harmonious proportions and serene ambiance. Completed rapidly for a medieval church, between 1329 and 1384, it maintains a stylistic purity rare for the era due to its construction within just 55 years. The church's interior, marked by its vast, open spaces and the widest column spacing of any Gothic church in Europe, creates an impression of sublime width, height, and airiness​​​​. It’s our favorite church in Barcelona, here’s why:
1: The church's interior is notably sparse in imagery, a result of damage from a fire in 1936 during anticlerical disturbances. Despite this loss, including the destruction of the Baroque retable by Deodat Casanoves and Salvador Gurri, some stained-glass windows from various periods have survived, contributing to the church's luminous atmosphere​​.
2: The basilica's design boasts very tall slender columns that are 13 meters apart, supporting three naves of equal height. This unique structural approach contributes to the church's feeling of spaciousness, with its maximum height matching its total width at 100 medieval feet​​​​.
3: Rooftop Terrace Tour: Available from May to October, the tour offers insights into the church's construction, history, and the surrounding La Ribera neighborhood. 
4: Santa Maria del Mar is a beacon of Barcelona's rich maritime and mercantile history. Its pure Catalan Gothic style, and the communal effort symbolized by the 'bastaixos' carved on its doors, speak to a deep connection between the city's people and this venerable basilica.

These masterpieces, primarily by Masaccio and Masolino, mark a pivotal moment in the history of art, showcasing the early Renaissance's break from Gothic conventions - a must-visit for art lovers: 
1 - The Brancacci Chapel's walls are adorned with frescoes that revolutionized Renaissance art. Masaccio's 'Expulsion from the Garden of Eden' and 'The Tribute Money' are particularly notable for their use of perspective and chiaroscuro, techniques that added a new dimension and realism to painting. These works had a profound influence on later artists, including Michelangelo and Raphael.
2 - The frescoes are a result of the collaboration between Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippino Lippi. While Masolino initiated the project with a softer, more Gothic style, Masaccio's contributions introduced a more naturalistic approach. Lippi, completing the chapel after Masaccio's untimely death, brought his unique touch, bridging the gap between the early and high Renaissance styles.
