While you’re in Rome, this immersive masterclass offers the perfect chance to discover the wines of its surrounding countryside—Lazio, a region often overlooked yet rich in character and complexity. Held at Maurizio’s wine club in the city, the two-hour session is guided by sommeliers Maurizio and Frank, whose work with small producers has helped bring Lazio’s native wines to light.

Over the course of two hours, you’ll taste native grapes and forgotten appellations: from the bright, fruit-forward whites of Castelli Romani to the mineral-driven wines of Lake Bolsena’s volcanic soils. And then, the bold finale—Cesanese, the pride of Ciociaria, a red unlike any other in Italy.

Mexico

Maya heritage doesn’t exist only at Yucatán’s remote archaeological sites. It is also present in Mérida, embedded in places where past and present coexist. This downtown mini-archaeology walking tour, with short taxi rides when needed, offers a way to engage with the city’s heritage through sites often missed by visitors.

The route begins near the former Jesuit university buildings now associated with Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY), where you visit a colonial-era church built using stones from an earlier Maya structure, with carved blocks still visible in its walls. From there, you travel to Chen Hó, a small but impressive archaeological site located within Mérida’s urban area, and then to Xoclán Eco-Archaeological Park, a green space with visible Maya remains and a markedly quiet atmosphere despite its proximity to surrounding neighborhoods.

Along the way, your host introduces Mérida’s history and cultural layers, with time to sample local flavors as part of the experience.

This experience begins with a walk through the historic center of Tempio Pausania, known as the “City of Stone” for its granite buildings. The route leads to the old railway station, a Liberty-style building opened in 1931, with original wooden interiors and pictures by Sardinian artist Giuseppe Biasi.

The highlight is a private, exclusive performance by the Coro Gabriel, one of Sardinia’s oldest vocal ensembles. They sing the tasgia, a rare polyphonic chant that evolved from the UNESCO-listed canto a tenore. Unlike its predecessor, the tasgia features all four voices singing lyrics and includes improvisational shifts in tone and harmony, echoing elements of jazz. On your final morning, you’ll likely rise early—if you do, step outside to see Mount Toubkal lit by sunrise, a quiet reminder of where you’ve just been. After a warm, local breakfast, you’ll make the gentle descent back to Imlil, retracing familiar trails through the valley. Once in Imlil, you can pause to rest or meet your driver for the return to Marrakesh (organize the return trip with your Marrakesh home, it's not included in this experience). 

This closing stretch offers a soft, thoughtful end to your journey. The morning light, a simple and tasty Berber breakfast, and the familiar rhythm of the trail give you time to reflect. If you’re heading back to Marrakesh, please organize with your hotel to pick you up in Imlil. It’s a smooth return—both physically and mentally—from the mountains to the city.

Summit day begins before sunrise with a steady, demanding ascent from the refuge to the top of Mount Toubkal, which rises to 4,167 meters—the highest point in North Africa. The trail is rocky and steep, but manageable with good fitness. At the summit, you’ll stand above the High Atlas, with sweeping views over the Marrakech plains and, on clear mornings, the edge of the Sahara.

After the summit climb in the early morning, you’ll make a gradual descent down to the village of Aremd. You’ll arrive by the afternoon—early enough to rest, recover, and take in the views of the mountain you just climbed. You’ll stay the night in a simple and rustic but comfortable Berber guesthouse, with a private room/double/family room with a member of your party (based on your preference), each with its own ensuite bathroom. These are simple and modest, comfortable and safe lodgings. 

This final night gives you space to absorb the full experience. From the guesthouse terrace, you’ll see Toubkal from below—quiet and distant now. You’ll have a chance to walk through the village, meet local residents, and maybe visit the village hammam. Dinner is a warm, home-cooked meal—flavorful, generous, and made from local ingredients. The pace is slower, the conversation flows, and your connection to this landscape deepens in a quieter, more personal way.

Descent & Berber Village Stay

After a full day of ascent, you’ll reach the Toubkal Refuge—your base at 3,200 meters before summit day. You’ll break for a picnic lunch en route or stop for a warm meal in a Berber home, then continue to the refuge. Here, you’ll settle into a private/double room, depending on the group's needs (please share this with Ahmed after booking), and enjoy a proper dinner to refuel and acclimatize for the climb ahead.

Most trekkers sleep in dorm-style bunk rooms with shared bathrooms at the Toubkal Refuge, often alongside 10–20 others—conditions that don’t support privacy, comfort, or restful sleep. In contrast, this experience includes a private / double room shared only within your group, based on your preference, each with an ensuite bathroom. It’s a quieter, more restorative way to spend the night at altitude. Keep in mind, however, that these are simple and modest rooms. In rare situations when all private rooms are booked out, Ahmed will arrange private/double tents for your party -- these are comfortable, safe and provide a peaceful night's sleep (in this case, the bathrooms at the refuge will be used.)

Meals are freshly prepared and more generous than the standard dorm fare, with a focus on nourishment and recovery.

Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. “In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

Chapultepec Castle

There’s not much that has changed in this Square in its millennium of existence. 

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of what you’ll find: Percussionists, Acrobats, Fortune-tellers, Conjurers, Gnawa musicians, Henna tattoo artists, Food Vendors, Snake charmers, Potion peddlers, Un-winnable carnival games. 

As dusk settles over Marrakech, look up at the sky. Follow the direction of what looks like a bonfire of epic proportions. When you manage to edge past the thousands of people, you realize it’s only smoke from kebabs and snails at over a hundred barbecue stalls, staffed by some of the busiest chefs and unflappable crews you’ll ever see.

Look around the Square and locate a restaurant with a balcony. Buy a glass of mint tea and grab a coveted plastic chair at the edge of the balcony to see the grand view of the world’s largest human tableau play out below.
