This full-day bird watching excursion is led by a naturalist guide and conservationist who surveys the local population of avifauna and knows all the best spots to encounter resident and migratory species. After leaving San Pedro, you first drive south towards Jere Canyon (Quebrada de Jere) where tamarugo conebills, oasis hummingbirds, white-winged doves, and plain-mantled tit-spinetails dwell. There are brief stops along the way in oases frequented by birds. The morning concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat's Chaxa Lagoon, where you will encounter three of the world's six flamingo species.

Upon return to San Pedro, you'll enjoy a relaxed lunch with Valeria in a local restaurant before driving north to highland canyons and wetlands. While operating her tour business, she has fostered deep roots in the community. Her expertise lies in the region's natural history, from its intricate geology and flora to fascinating wildlife and, in particular, its avifauna. This is enhanced by her active participation in local conservation and environmental education projects. 

Most recently, Valeria has participated in the Flamingo and Shore Birds Survey, the Diademed Sandpiper Plover Survey, and an ongoing CONAF raptor monitoring project in the Moon Valley. Corviale is one of the most ambitious and controversial housing projects ever built in Rome. Conceived in 1972 and stretching for nearly a kilometer, this massive complex—locally known as Il Serpentone (“the big snake”)—was inspired by Brutalist and Rationalist architecture and designed to house 8,500 people.

Walking through Corviale today means entering the layered story of a city that, in the 1970s, faced deep social inequality—when a third of its population still lived in shack settlements. This experience unfolds as a moving urban workshop: you’ll explore the hopes and failures that shaped this space, from its utopian promise of public housing to the long years of abandonment, marginalization, and stigma.

As the district undergoes a slow and ongoing transformation, this walk invites you to question what renewal really means, and how architecture, policy, and community intersect in the making—and remaking—of a city.

This experience offers a rare chance to explore Corviale with a sociologist who has spent years studying the urban stereotypes often attached to Rome’s outskirts. remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

At the close of the turtle hatching season, in January this year, when only a handful of nests remained, we assisted Mel Tennant, fondly known as The Turtle Man, in releasing 54 newly hatched Hawkbill Turtles into the ocean.

The turtle hatchlings — incredibly — found the ocean on their own, with no help or nudging from us. How do they know where to go and how to swim right after they are hatched? Well, they do. Sea turtles are born with the instinct to move toward the brightest direction.

The Oracabessa Bay Sea Turtle Project, under Mel’s extraordinary leadership, provides incubation support and the safe release of these endangered creatures.

Known as the most southwestern point of Europe, this rugged promontory offers a glimpse into Portugal's past and a spectacle of natural beauty. Visiting the salt pans in Olhão during summer offers a unique and scenic experience, revealing a centuries-old tradition that continues to shape the Algarve’s landscape and economy. Located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, these shimmering salt flats provide a fascinating look into the artisanal process of salt production and offer an ideal setting for observing wildlife. 

1. The salt pans are particularly striking in summer when the intense sun aids the natural evaporation process, leaving behind gleaming white salt crystals. Walking along the paths, you’ll see salt workers skillfully raking and collecting salt, a practice that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

2. These salt flats are a sanctuary for birdlife, with flamingos, storks, and avocets frequently spotted wading through the shallow pools. Summer brings an abundance of bird species to the area, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and photographers. 

3. Fleur de sel, or “flower of salt,” is one of the premium products harvested here. San Pedro de Atacama is an oasis within the driest desert in the world at the very north of Chile. At more than 8000 feet above sea level, it sits in the center of a ring of volcanoes, the most famous of them being Licancabur. A couple of them still spew smoke.

Volcano climbing, consequently, is a very popular activity here ('why climb the volcanoes?’ - I ask. ‘Because you can!’- says the guide) and we are quickly put on a 4-day program to acclimatize ourselves to the altitude - with progressively higher altitude hikes to prepare us for the final climb. My favorite part of the hikes is the opportunity to capture the colors of the altiplano! That and the thrill of walking through the Mars like topography of the Atacama desert.

Climb Licancabur if you are an experienced climber, Toco or Corona for one day climbs. And you will have bragging rights forever for having climbed a volcano!

Volcano Climbing

Exploring the Spaccanapoli district is a great way to explore Naples. Explore narrow, bustling streets filled with centuries-old architecture, local artisans, and hidden gems that showcase the city’s deep history and vibrant culture. Running through the heart of the historic center, Spaccanapoli literally means "Naples Splitter" because it slices the city in two. One of the highlights of this district is the Sansevero Chapel, a small yet astonishing space filled with stunning baroque sculptures and mystical symbolism.

Highlights of the Spaccanapoli District:
1. Sansevero Chapel Museum: This chapel is home to the renowned sculpture *Cristo Velato* (Veiled Christ) by Giuseppe Sanmartino, a breathtaking masterpiece known for its delicate marble veil that seems impossibly real. The chapel also contains mysterious symbols and alchemical elements, making it one of Naples' most intriguing sites.

2. Church of Santa Chiara: A short walk from Sansevero Chapel, this Gothic church offers a serene contrast to Spaccanapoli’s bustling streets. Behind its grand facade is a peaceful cloister decorated with colorful majolica tiles depicting pastoral scenes.

3. Naples Cathedral (Duomo di San Gennaro): Visit this majestic cathedral, dedicated to the city’s patron saint, San Gennaro. It houses relics of the saint and is famous for the annual miracle of the liquefaction of his blood, a deeply significant event for Neapolitans.

4. Piazza del Gesù Nuovo: This lively square is dominated by the striking facade of the Gesù Nuovo Church, a Baroque gem with a diamond-patterned exterior. The inside is equally impressive, with richly decorated altars and frescoes.

Visitor Tips:
Spaccanapoli’s streets are narrow and busy, so wear comfortable shoes for walking and exploring. The Sansevero Chapel can get crowded—book tickets in advance to avoid long lines. Don’t forget to stop at one of the many pastry shops along the way to sample local delicacies like sfogliatella or babà!

Exploring Naples

Colombia

The Coffee Triangle - which includes the pueblo towns of Salento and Filandia - has its own culture, diversity, food and of course, coffee. 
[☕️]
I was told that I would find the best cup of coffee in the world in Colombia’s Zona Cafetera. I found some of the tastiest beans in little vintage cafes with vintage coffee machines. The coffee plantations nearby offered tasting sessions too. Part of the fun Is to climb on the back of a colorful Jeep to get to the plantations.

On the Coffee Road, in the colorful town of Salento, the biggest attraction - besides the coffee and the arepas - is its traditional architecture of one- and two-story buildings, with walls painted white, and doors and window frames in the brightest of candy colors.
