Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology is one of Latin America’s most important museums — a vital space for understanding the depth and diversity of Mexico’s cultural heritage. Opened in 1964, it preserves and celebrates the pre-Columbian civilizations that shaped the country: the Aztec, Maya, Olmec, and Zapotec. The building itself is an icon of modern Mexican architecture — a vast courtyard shaded by a monumental concrete “umbrella,” its single central column carved with mythic reliefs.

Inside, you move through galleries that feel like time slowed down. Among the most famous pieces are the Aztec Sun Stone, a massive calendar disk that encodes the Aztec cosmos, and the colossal Olmec heads carved from basalt. Anthropology Museum

If you choose Chapultepec Castle instead of Museo Tamayo, Andrea will arrange to visit this first — so you can make the climb while the hill is still cool and shaded.

Perched high above the city, the castle commands sweeping views of the valley and stands as a symbol of Mexico’s layered history. Built in the late 18th century, it has served many lives — first as colonial palace, then as residence of Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota during the Second Mexican Empire, and later as official home of Mexico’s presidents. Today, it houses the National Museum of History, where rooms are preserved with 19th-century furnishings, imperial artifacts, and murals tracing the country’s struggle for independence and revolution.

Highlights include Maximilian’s ornate chambers, the Hall of Battles, and murals by Diego Rivera and other great Mexican artists. From the terraces, weather/visibility permitting, you can see the city stretching below — green canopy to skyline.

Founded in 1981 by painter Rufino Tamayo and his wife Olga, the museum was conceived as a bridge — to bring international art to Mexican audiences while celebrating the country’s own creative voices. Designed by Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky, its striking modernist architecture blends into the green contours of Chapultepec Park, creating a space that feels both serene and charged with creative energy.

Inside, you’ll explore Tamayo’s own paintings, where indigenous imagery and cosmic color meet the abstract language of modern art. Option 2: Museo Tamayo

Polanco is one of Mexico City’s most elegant and dynamic neighborhoods, known for its tree-lined streets, luxury boutiques, fine dining, and cultural richness.

After your morning exploration through Mexico’s past and modern expressions, Andrea will take you to a restaurant for an extensive lunch where you'll get to try various dishes representing some of the best of Mexico City cuisine.

From there, you visit the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, a remarkable insitution that preserves the experimental studio and public mission of David Alfaro Siqueiros, one of Mexico’s great muralists. Housed in the artist’s former home and workshop, the building still bears the traces of his process — large-scale murals, technical studies, and the curved walls designed for his “Polyangular” method, meant to let art move with the viewer.

You walk the line between art and activism, between creation and conviction — a fitting conclusion to the day.

The afternoon seeks to tie the day’s themes together: Mexico’s art as memory, power, and reinvention. Over lunch, the continuing conversation with Andrea helps you connect the threads — from the mythology of the Anthropology Museum, to the expression of the Tamayo, to the social conscience embodied in the work for modern artists.

At the Sala de Arte Público, you see how art left the studio and entered civic life. Andrea Bustillos, trained in Madrid, is an art historian and currently Curator in Chief of Fundación Casa Wabi. With a strong focus on contemporary painting, she has curated numerous exhibitions and collaborated with a wide range of artists, from emerging voices to established names. Andrea Villers, educated in Granada, with a master's in curatorial studies, runs a consultancy that develops exhibition projects and advises on cultural strategies.

Morocco

This is a 3-hour cooking experience at the Amal Women’s Cooperative Center, founded by the remarkable Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen. Rooted in empowerment and inclusion, the experience offers a hands-on introduction to Moroccan cuisine while celebrating the social impact of food.

You’ll begin with a short introduction to Amal’s mission—supporting women from vulnerable backgrounds by training them in the culinary arts. From there, you’ll dive into Moroccan cooking: exploring local spices, learning the stories of each dish, and preparing a traditional feast with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Some recipes are cooked over charcoal, using bellows to control the flame—an immersive detail that reflects Morocco’s culinary heritage.

As your dishes simmer, you'll enjoy a traditional tea paired with homemade cookies. The experience ends with a shared meal; you’ll gather to taste what you've created and connect with members of the Amal team, learning more about their lives, resilience and work.

This experience was created by Nora Fitzgerald Belahcen, founder of the Amal Center—a nonprofit dedicated to empowering women through culinary training and job placement. The session is led by the on-site manager and supported by members of Amal’s original team of chefs—women who helped shape the center and now lead with warmth, confidence, and skill.

You’ll be guided by a small, welcoming team trained in the spirit of Amal’s mission: to use food not only as craft and culture, but as a path to opportunity and connection. Japan

While Zen Buddhism arrived in Japan in the 13th century, it wasn't until the 15th century in the then-capital of Kyoto that it truly flourished, permeating many aspects of Japanese culture and expanding into numerous influential temples. One of the areas profoundly shaped by Zen Buddhism during this period was the Japanese tea ceremony.

On this exclusive deep dive into the connections between Zen Buddhism and the tea ceremony, Zen art history expert Eric Luong takes you to the Jotenkaku Museum, part of Shokoku-ji Temple, to explore its collection. Eric will give you a curated tour of the museum’s vast cultural treasures created by Zen priests and followers.

After gaining an understanding of Zen Buddhism through its artwork, you’ll move to a 100-year-old machiya townhouse to take part in an exclusive private tea ceremony that demonstrates the concepts you explored at the museum. This experience is led by a Japanese tea master with over eight years of practice both in Japan and abroad.

This experience is perfect for those who want to understand the Japanese tea ceremony beyond a superficial level, as well as for those with a deep appreciation for the study and application of Zen — especially within the arts.

Your host, Eric, will give you a thorough and personable perspective on the collection at the Jotenkaku Museum — home to important cultural properties rarely seen outside Japan — and introduce you to his friend, a Japanese tea ceremony practitioner offering a rare, exclusive ceremony in a private machiya setting. The machiya itself is over a century old, offering a serene, authentic atmosphere not usually open to the public.

In 2002, Eric came to Kyoto to earn his master’s degree in Japanese Art History and has called the city home ever since. His deep knowledge of Zen art, coupled with his profound respect for Japan’s culture and heritage, makes him a fascinating resource for understanding Zen Buddhism’s history and its influence on the tea ceremony.

This experience is ideal for anyone curious about the enduring Zapotec people—a culture and community whose roots in Oaxaca stretch back more than 2,500 years.

It begins at a 16th-century church built by Dominican monks, where Spanish colonial design merges with indigenous iconography. You’ll learn the history of the structure, admire the intricate hand-painted details made with natural dyes, and climb an ancient staircase to a 17th-century organ that’s still played during church services.

Next, you’ll visit the home of a local family who cultivate eggs, flowers and organic vegetables and preserve the local Zapotec dialect. Here, you’ll learn about the history of this indigenous language, with a short lesson by a professional language professor, and enjoy a home cooked meal made with ingredients from their organic farm. They’ll explain the government system of 'usos y costumbres’, whereby indigenous people are able to regulate the life of the community.

Your guide spent 14 years teaching language and working as a translator in the U.S. Now back in his pueblo, he shares the importance of language preservation and the deep connection Oaxacans have to family, food, and land. With him, you’ll visit the church, walk through the family’s organic garden, and share a meal. They started their farm as a family project during the pandemic, and they work their land as three generations. As he is a professor during the week, this experience is only available on Sundays.

It’s home to the annual Feria de las Flores, a tradition since 1856 that blends indigenous and Catholic heritage through floral displays and cultural events.

Your host, Raquel, was born here and brings layered context—historical, sociological, and botanical. She shares stories behind sites like the legendary Mercado de las Flores, and how former haciendas shaped land use and architecture.

Chile

Hosted by an architect, this full-day excursion analyzes Santiago’s preserved pre-colonial grid and the strategic placement of a city within a natural basin. You'll see the cathedral, Plaza de Armas, and a network of covered pedestrian galleries cutting through the city blocks, while discussing the eclecticism of the historic downtown. The itinerary continues at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (built in 1972 and renovated in 2009 after a national competition), Santa Lucía Hill (the founding site of colonial Santiago), the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art (designed by Smiljan Radic), and La Moneda Cultural Center. 

Diego will guide you around the barrios of Lastarria—a cultural hub—and the historic Yungay. These historic points of interest are juxtaposed with the renowned Alejandro Aravena's UC Innovation Center. Diego Baloian is an architect holding a degree from the Universidad Finis Terrae and a Master's in Cultural Heritage from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). As the founding partner at DBG Architecture and Massantiago, his work focuses on architectural design, the restoration of heritage buildings, and urban planning. He has led and participated in projects and seminars in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, and Hungary. 

Diego has also organized conferences and exhibitions on Latin American architecture in collaboration with Guiding Architects Network, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH). 

In the academic field, he has worked with communities on research and heritage valorization projects, implementing collaborative methodologies across diverse cultural and territorial contexts.

Enchanted: Lokrum Island

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

Fes Medina: Bab To Bab

The charming, well-preserved streetscapes of the heritage town in Old Lijiang Is perfect for getting lost  The winding streets lure you in - and shops selling Tiquanyin tea, handmade paper, musical drums, souvenirs and food vie for the attention of tourists. 

The Naxi people of Lijiang are proud, artistic and musically talented. It's a matriarchal society, one that I relate well to, and I enjoyed my interactions with the wise women I meet.

In the market square in Lijiang Old Town, groups of Naxi women get together to perform a few dances. There is no clear structure for their activity, and the women seem to be on their own schedule - some leave after a couple of dances, others hang around. Besides their traditional costume, what is common among them is their energy and zest for life.
