This intimate Ebru experience begins in the heart of Istanbul, leading you into a serene gallery where the art of Turkish marbling, or Ebru, comes alive. Rooted in Central Asia and cherished through centuries in the Ottoman Empire, Ebru has adorned everything from manuscripts to textiles, with each swirling pattern carrying stories of cultural heritage and symbolism. 

Guided by a master artist, you’ll first delve into the historical, cultural and spiritual depth behind Ebru’s fluid designs, then experience a live demonstration of foundational techniques. You'll learn how to hold the brush, apply vibrant natural pigments, and guide the floating colors into intricate shapes like "battal" (stone pattern) or "nightingale's nest." As the pigments dance on water, you’ll gain insight into the meanings woven into each pattern. With hands-on guidance, you’ll create two marbled paper designs to take home—a lasting piece of Turkish art and culture, made by you.

What makes this experience truly special is the host Nesime, a master artist who has been practicing Ebru for over a decade. You’ll be welcomed into her private gallery. She will guide you through the technical foundations—holding special brushes, applying pigments, using the “tekne” (water tray), and shaping intricate patterns—explaining the symbolism of each design. You’ll learn how Ebru uses natural pigments that float on a thickened liquid, allowing for a unique interplay of color and texture. Accompanied by a local photographer, you’ll begin facing the Atlantic at Funchal’s Marina, then wander through the Zona Velha, the city’s oldest district, home to the iconic Lavradores Market, where tropical fruit stalls, fishmongers, and flower vendors come together. This full-day experience from Mendoza takes you high into the Andes for what can only be described as the ultimate feast with the ultimate view. You'll travel through breathtaking mountain landscapes, stopping first in Potrerillos for local treats—tortitas and facturas (savory and sweet pastries)—served with mate (a caffeinated herbal beverage) or coffee. From there, the journey continues to a stunning viewpoint at the entrance of the Uspallata Valley near the Chilean border.

“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

Karaalioglu Park

The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, a mesmerizing protected coastal lagoon in Portugal’s Algarve region, is one of the country’s richest natural habitats. Known for its intricate network of islands, sandy beaches, salt marshes, and tidal flats, this nature park is a haven for biodiversity and a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Spanning around 170 square kilometers, it is home to a variety of bird species, unique plants, and marine life, making it an ideal destination for exploration, whether by foot or by boat.

Highlights of a Visit to Parque Natural da Ria Formosa:

1. Visit the uninhabited island, also known as Ilha da Barreta, which offers pristine beaches and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s ideal for those seeking solitude and scenic views of the Atlantic, and you can explore the soft sands, swim in clear waters, or walk along nature trails that lead to panoramic viewpoints.

2. Ria Formosa is famous for its diverse bird population, including flamingos, spoonbills, and rare purple herons. It’s also one of the few habitats of the endangered Portuguese water dog and the rare seahorse population in its tranquil waters.

Guatemala

The spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal overrun by miles of  unspoiled jungle are extraordinarily rich in wildlife incl. the elusive jaguar. 🐆 

It’s one of the few UNESCO World Heritage sites that combines both cultural and natural richness and the 500+ sq km contains numerous remains of the Mayan civilization scattered across wetlands, savannah and tropical jungles teaming with birds and monkeys.

It was a thrilling experience to wander in a place that was one of the great cities of the world around 700 AD and wonder how people lived at that time. 

We went late afternoon to take advantage of the magical light falling on the structures and our guide, Daveed, was very helpful in highlighting the important sites and the life at that time. We enjoyed watching the sunset from the top of Temple IV. A perfect filming location for Yavin 4 in Star Wars.

After the sunset, we walked in the fading light to the spectacular Grand Plaza, relieved in Daveed’s assurance that the 🐆 is shy of humans.

Pyramids of Tikal

Self-drive tour along the west coast of Lagos, where rugged cliffs meet turquoise waters and pristine nature awaits. This journey will take you through stunning coastal landscapes, culminating in a visit to the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. 

Highlights:

1. Begin your drive with a stop at Ponta da Piedade, an iconic collection of sandstone cliffs just outside Lagos. The dramatic formations, sculpted by centuries of wind and waves, create an unforgettable view over the Atlantic. For an up-close experience, consider a boat tour through its grottoes and sea arches, or take the cliff-top path for spectacular panoramas.

2. Head northwest toward Praia do Amado, one of the Algarve’s best beaches for surfing. Known for its rolling waves and unspoiled shores, Amado attracts surfers and sunbathers from around the world. 

3. Continue into this expansive nature park, which stretches from the Algarve to the Alentejo region. This protected area is home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare coastal plants and nesting seabirds. Drive along the coastal roads, stopping at viewpoints to soak in views.

4. Conclude your tour at Cape St. Vincent, the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe. Known as “the End of the World” in medieval times, the cape boasts a windswept cliffside view and a historic lighthouse that guides ships through these fabled waters. Arrive at sunset for a stunning display.

5. Along the way, stop in quaint fishing villages like Carrapateira or Sagres, where you can explore local markets, try fresh seafood, and experience the slow pace of traditional Portuguese coastal life.

Tips: Start early to avoid traffic and enjoy quieter beaches and viewpoints. Aim to reach Cape St. Vincent by sunset for a magical experience. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and shoes for exploring.

Lagos West Coast Self-drive

Orgosolo, a picturesque village in the heart of Sardinia’s Barbagia region, is renowned for its unique blend of history, culture, and artistry. Once known for its rugged and rebellious reputation, Orgosolo has transformed into an open-air art gallery, famous for its politically charged and socially conscious murals. Surrounded by stunning mountainous landscapes, this village offers visitors a chance to explore Sardinia’s deep traditions and vibrant contemporary spirit. 
1. The murals are the village’s most striking feature, with over 150 vivid paintings adorning walls, depicting themes of politics, social justice, and daily life. These works, which began in the 1960s, reflect both local struggles and global events. 
2. Orgosolo’s traditional culture remains strong, with festivals, Sardinian music, and local crafts offering an authentic glimpse into the region’s heritage. 
3. The village is surrounded by the Supramonte Mountains, providing a stunning natural backdrop and opportunities for hiking, exploring caves, and admiring panoramic views. 
4. The Museum of Sardinian Life and Folk Traditions showcases the region’s history, including traditional costumes, tools, and artifacts. 
5. Local restaurants and trattorias serve Sardinian specialties, such as porceddu (roast suckling pig) and pane carasau, offering a taste of the island’s rich culinary heritage. 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 2–4 hours exploring Orgosolo. Take time to admire the murals and enjoy a leisurely meal at a local eatery. Visit in spring or autumn for pleasant weather, and if possible, during a local festival to experience the village’s lively traditions.

The Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts in located inside the ancient Fes Medina and is renowned for its comprehensive display of woodcraft but also for its unique architectural features that make a visit here a memorable experience. Why visit?
1. One of the standout attractions within the museum is the elegant fountain located in the courtyard. Beautifully adorned with intricate wood and tile work, it exemplifies the fine craftsmanship typical of Moroccan artistry and offers a tranquil centerpiece to the museum’s architecture. 
2. The museum's structure itself, an 18th-century fondouk that was once a bustling center for merchants, and has been meticulously restored to showcase the original wooden carvings and tile work. 
3. Each floor of the museum offers a different perspective on the evolution of woodcraft in Morocco, from domestic and architectural to liturgical pieces, providing a comprehensive view of this traditional art form.
4. Amid the chaos of the Medina, the museum offers a peaceful retreat. The rooftop café provides a space to relax and soak in the views of the city.
The museum is accessible with an entrance fee - it’s definitely a place of insight and inspiration, and can be viewed in an hour’s time.

Finland

At Riisitunturi National Park, ancient trees enveloped in layers of sticky snow (called ‘tykky’ in Finnish) assume fantastical shapes of monsters, ghosts, birds and families of snow people. On days like this, when sunrise and sunset happen within a two-hour window, backgrounds are brushed in pinks and yellows, and foregrounds etched with tracks of reindeer, dogs and humans. 

Snow is something more than frozen water to the Sami people. It’s a way of expressing the basis of their existence.

Best time to visit? Late December to March. Getting there from Rovaniemi takes more than 2 hours each way, but the trails are easy - we did a 4 km.

Rome's Trevi Fountain, a jewel of Baroque artistry, is a symbol of the city's rich history and artistic heritage. Alongside the famous above-ground structure, the lesser-known underground passages offer a unique glimpse into the ancient aqueducts that have supplied the fountain for centuries. 1 - Legends in Baroque: The Trevi Fountain, with its dramatic sculptures and cascading waters, is an emblematic sight in Rome. Designed by Nicola Salvi, the fountain features Oceanus, the god of water, amidst sea horses and tritons. According to legend, throwing a coin into the fountain ensures a return to Rome, making this a cherished ritual for visitors.

2 - Architectural Details: As you admire the fountain, notice the intricate details – the realism of the sculptures, the play of light on water, and the architectural harmony. The fountain’s design and its integration into the Palazzo Poli illustrate the Baroque era's grandeur and its emphasis on theatrical effects.

3 - Underground Vicus Caprarius: Beneath the bustling streets lies the Vicus Caprarius, also known as the "City of Water." This archaeological area, accessible to visitors, reveals the complex system of ancient Roman aqueducts. The underground tour offers an insight into how these aqueducts, particularly the Aqua Virgo, have been supplying water to the Trevi Fountain since ancient times.
