This is so you can take the cable car from the base of Montserrat up to the monastery, which is located 720 meters above sea level. The cable car offers a truly stunning panoramic view of the surrounding landscape not available via any other method.

Once you've arrived, you'll enter the Cathedral and get to approach the throne where the famous Black Madonna sits. The Monastery and Cathedral has been built bit-by-bit for centuries, and you'll get to enjoy various architectural styles ranging from Gothic to Baroque.

In the heart of Fes, the Chouara and Sidi Moussa tanneries stand as enduring relics of the Middle Ages, their practices largely unchanged since that era. Here, the ancient art of leather tanning transforms raw hides into beautifully supple fabrics through a strikingly colorful yet arduous process. As you navigate the narrow alleys leading to the tanneries, the air grows thick with a pungent aroma, a hallmark of this traditional craft. Things to look for:

1. The Chouara Tannery, perhaps the most famous in Fes, alongside Sidi Moussa, offers a rare glimpse into the labor-intensive process of leather production. Hundreds of workers from multiple generations of families toil from sunrise to sunset. They labor over open vats filled with a vivid mosaic of natural dyes and pigeon dung, an essential component in softening the leather. This spectacle of color and effort unfolds beneath the Moroccan sun, casting a palette that feels almost surreal against the earthy tones of the Medina.

2. Visitors are handed a sprig of mint to ward off the overwhelming smells. The sensory overload is part of the experience!

3. Guides explain the dyeing process, pointing out the use of natural ingredients like saffron, poppy flower, indigo, and henna.

The Tanneries of Fes

Buenos Aires is one of the southernmost capitals in the world and also an exciting city. Although there are many ways to explore Argentine city life, biking is the most fun.

Biking is free in Buenos Aires, at least for a few hours. Using an app I downloaded to my phone, I spent the next few days biking around the Botanical Gardens, the best museums, art galleries, El Caminito, the riverfront, and the city's largest flea market (on weekends only!). While you’re at it, you can also visit one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world in Recoleta.

The bike paths are well developed, and if you follow the signs, you'll find the main points quickly. Be careful, helmets are not available. If you want to be on the safe side, rent one in one of the bike rentals.

The Moroccan fig liquor is beginning to sneak up on me. Or perhaps it’s the jet lag. The soulful music of the live folk vocalist is not helping either. 

We’re waiting for dinner, in the courtyard of a restored Riad. It’s a good thing I haven’t eaten much during the flight because very soon, it’s clear that they expect me to have the appetite of a small army. 

The food is absolutely delicious, and here’s what I learn:
“Salad” is a selection of 5-10 amazing dips served with khobz - flatbread. 
Pigeon pastille is a must-have any time you see it on a menu!
Tagine of lamb with fluffy couscous - when cooked to perfection as it is here - is irresistible. 

This is followed by an elaborate dessert course, mint tea prepared with precision and ceremony, gnawa singers and a belly dancer who insists on audience participation.

Of Pigeon Pastille

Catania's fish market, known locally as "A Piscaria," is the heart of the city. It’s loud, it’s surprising, it’s humbling, it’s real. Colours, fragrances, and market place shouting.

A visit to Catania's fish market allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture, adding a unique and flavorful element to your Sicily travels.

The fish market comes to life in the early morning, around 5.30 a.m., when the fishmongers arrive. But from around 7.30 a.m., the market offers a more calm environment; it's easier to roam among the booths, and soak up the environment.

This sprawling network of shallow salt pools, used for the traditional method of sea salt extraction, dates back to the Phoenicians. 1: Salt Harvesting Tradition: The salt pans showcase a centuries-old method of salt harvesting. Sea water is channeled into shallow ponds and left to evaporate, leaving behind high-quality sea salt. 
2: Eco-System and Wildlife: The area is a thriving ecosystem, attracting a diverse range of bird species, especially during the migration seasons. Flamingos, herons, and storks are common sights, making it a fantastic spot for birdwatching.
3: Windmills and Museums: Scattered across the salt pans are iconic windmills, once used to pump water and grind the harvested salt. Some of these windmills have been converted into museums, providing insights into the history and process of salt production. We also recommend visiting the Salt Museum of Saline Culcasi, located in the Nubia district, this museum is a vivid testament to the harmonious relationship between the sea and the land. 
4: Panoramic Views: The salt pans offer mesmerizing views, especially at sunset when the sky and water transform into a palette of vivid colors. The blend of nature and craftsmanship makes for an unforgettable sight.
5: Culinary Significance: Marsala salt is renowned for its quality and is a staple in Sicilian cuisine. You can purchase locally harvested salt, a unique souvenir representing the region's culinary heritage.

Leave from Split or Rovinj at 5:00 AM, arriving at 8:00 AM when the park opens. Purchase your tickets online in advance to save time.

Veliki Slap (8:15 AM - 8:45 AM). Gear: Wide-angle lens, tripod. Tips: Capture the waterfall in the soft morning light. The wide-angle lens will include the surrounding landscape, and the tripod ensures stability for long exposure shots to capture the water's movement.

Lower Lakes (Donja Jezera) (9:00 AM - 10:30 AM). Gear: Polarizing filter, wide-angle lens. Tips: Walk along the boardwalks, capturing reflections on the water. The polarizing filter enhances water colors and reduces glare. Experiment with various angles to get different perspectives of the lakes and surrounding vegetation.

Upper Lakes (Gornja Jezera) (10:45 AM - 12:00 PM). Gear: Polarizing filter, telephoto lens. Tips: Capture the lush greenery and numerous waterfalls. Use the polarizing filter to manage reflections and the telephoto lens for detailed shots of the waterfalls and flora. Focus on textures and patterns in the landscape.

Sastavci Waterfall (12:15 PM - 12:45 PM). Gear: Tripod, wide-angle lens. Tips: Experiment with long exposure shots to achieve a silky water effect. Frame the waterfall with surrounding greenery to add depth to your photos. The tripod is essential for stabilizing the camera during long exposures.

Boardwalks and Wooden Paths (1:00 PM - 1:30 PM). Gear: Wide-angle lens. Tips: Use leading lines to draw attention to the natural beauty of the park. Capture wide-angle shots that include the paths and surrounding landscapes. These images will highlight the unique structure of the park’s walkways and the immersive experience they offer.

Bring: Tripod, polarizing filter, wide-angle lens, telephoto lens
Weather: Mist and rain can add a mystical quality to your photos, so embrace the changing conditions and use them to your advantage.

Photography in Plitvice

Stopping at viewpoints and small villages along the way makes for a more enjoyable and scenic trip.

Tizi n’Tichka Pass

On a rainy day, at 78°N, M/S Polar Girl sets out from Longyearbyen to Pyramiden. Even in dreary weather, there is joy in watching the puffins swimming alongside the boat.

Then we step on to the most surreal of ghost towns, Pyramiden, a Russian mining settlement with the northern-most statue of Lenin. 

The decision to abandon in the 90s was sudden. People were given just hours to leave. Signs of a hasty departure are everywhere. Dried up plants. Rusted playground swings. Utensils and stoves left in disarray. Hand-drawn artwork taped on the walls. 

The guide points out the men’s and women’s dorm buildings, euphemistically called London and Paris. Everything is trapped in a 1970s time-warp. A blast from the Soviet past. 

Trust Arktikugol (Arctic Coal), a Russian state owned coal mining company, continues to run this, now as a tourist destination. Perfect for filming a James Bond movie.

Back on the boat, we have views of the glacier and freshly barbequed burgers to cheer us up.
