Ana Isabel Ramos is a designer, illustrator, artist, and children’s book author living in Lisbon, Portugal. A native of this city, Ana has made Lisbon her home after living on three different continents. Having first-hand experience of being a foreigner when living abroad, Ana knows how long it can take to get to know a new place and believes sketching is a shortcut to it.

She has been sketching all her life and as a daily practice since the beginning of 2021. This consistent routine has helped change her relationship with time and space. She believes sketching slows everything down and affords a different connection with the people around us and the place we’re at.

When she’s not taking you to the best spots in Lisbon to sketch, she works with women to help them connect to their inner wisdom and creativity to get clarity and live life more fully, embracing their artistic side. In 2024, she published her first children’s book “Livro do Não”, which she illustrated with embroidery.

Best known for its cultural vibrancy and the iconic Arabic-inspired market, Loulé is a hub for local produce and crafts. You’ll discover the charm of the old town, with its medieval alleys, historic buildings, and the impressive Church of Matriz, a previous mosque during the Arab period . From the lively farmers' market to the quaint craft shops, each element of this tour offers an authentic taste of Algarve's heritage and the daily life of its people.

As you explore Loulé with him, you'll discover a rich mosaic of Algarve craftsmanship, from baking in traditional kitchens to intricate ceramic work that shapes the region's iconic chimneys, to the precise metalwork found in copper shops. João also introduces you to small artisans who travel to Loulé’s market from across the Algarve, enriching your experience with his personal insights and anecdotes. Chile

This six-hour asado experience in Valparaíso is the most authentic Chilean barbecue experience you'll find in the Fifth Region. Not only is your host an expert guide born and raised in the seaport, but he is also an avid grill master. The experience starts with the purchase of ingredients from Juan Víctor’s local feria (market). You’ll pick up fresh herbs and vegetables while chatting to vendors and immersing yourself in the scents, textures, and sounds of the market. As no Chilean meal is complete without wine, you will also purchase some regional Carménère and Sauvignon Cabernet.

Once at Juan Víctor’s family home, you will prepare the asado using his self-built brick parrilla. This includes chopping aji (chili) and tomatoes for pebre (Chilean salsa), tending to the charcoal, or priming marraqueta (bread rolls) for the starter of choripan (chorizo sausages). The experience is delivered at an unhurried pace with emphasis on sharing stories and truly understanding the culture of asado.

Dining in Chile goes beyond what appears on the menu. Food is a cultural exchange — anything placed on the table is for sharing, no meal is hurried, and stories are the main course. As the pinnacle of Chilean food culture, the asado chileno is rooted in the idea of convivencia (togetherness) and Juan Víctor's intimate barbecue is a rare invitation to experience this for yourself in Valparaíso. Forget table service and being waited on — you will peruse local markets before making yourself at home in a private porteño residence, usually in the company of Juan Víctor's family and friends.

As the asador (grill master), Juan Víctor oversees the running of things and sees that every item is cooked to perfection. While fire, meat, and wine are the foundations of the experience, it's the friendships that will leave a lasting impression. Only by tending to the parilla (grill) yourself, and helping to keep everyone’s glass of wine topped up can you truly appreciate the joy of the asado.

Dades Valley & Gorges

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the magnificent Hadrian’s Gate, a 2nd-century Roman triumphal arch that serves as the grand entrance to the city’s historic Kaleiçi (Old Town). Built in 130 AD to honor Emperor Hadrian’s visit, this three-arched marble gateway is one of the best-preserved Roman structures in Turkey. With its intricate carvings, towering Corinthian columns, and ancient road beneath, Hadrian’s Gate is a must-see for history lovers and photographers alike.

Hadrian’s Gate

Ouzoud Waterfalls

Yves Saint Laurent gifted Jardin Majorelle to Marrakech, the city that adopted him and his partner in the 60s. They bought an electric-blue villa and its garden, preserved the vision of its original owner (landscape painter Jacques Majorelle), and opened it to the public. 

What makes this feel like a psychedelic mirage in the desert?

Hot pink bougainvillea bursting from terracotta planters. Architectural cacti in lemon-yellow planters. Bamboos growing against cobalt-blue walls. Colorful birds flitting through palm trees. Saint Laurent’s gorgeous collection of Moroccan art, that I totally covet. 

It also has a museum that features jewelry in a setting that our guide Khadija keeps referring to as “a dream”. A dark room with a star-spangled ceiling and low voltage spotlights shining on stunning jewelry sets.

Psychedelic Mirage

Jamaica

The Man Who Built the Coolest Bar in the World. That would be a Jamaican fisherman from Saint Elizabeth called Floyd who thought it would be nice to have a place where he and his buddies could hang out to and from their fishing ventures. He built the bar on a sandbar a mile off the coast in Parottee Bay out of driftwood (the wood was restored after Hurricane Ivan in 2004). In between dips in the turquoise water, you can sip a Red Stripe, eat freshly grilled snapper and play dominoes. Or catch up with Floyd at the bar. Someday, I’d like to watch the sunset from there.

Boat Trip to Pelican Bar

Karagöl Nature Park, nestled in the mountains near İzmir, offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers. The park’s centerpiece is a serene mountain lake surrounded by lush forests, making it a favorite for picnics, hiking, and birdwatching. Karagöl Nature Park

Portugal’s Rota Vicentina is a spectacular network of coastal and inland hiking trails along the rugged southwestern coastline of the Alentejo and Algarve regions. It’s Halloween time in Beacon Hill in Boston. After much consideration, I decide that I am too old to collect candy from my generous neighbors.

So I pick up my camera instead and wander through Boston’s most historic neighborhood to celebrate its annual Halloween tradition.

Since the 1970s, this is one day when the charming tree-lined streets of Beacon Hill get packed ..
 
.. with costumed pets and people, infants dressed as pumpkins to the elderly dressed in traditional witching gear.

Watch out for the brooms. 

I run into a friend dressed up as Jamie Lannister from the Game of Thrones, complete with chopped arm hanging around his neck.
