Walking the market with Rita, you pause at selected stalls to see what is freshest that day, speak with vendors, and learn how locals judge quality — by scent, color, texture, and season.

From the market, you step into the surrounding streets for a stop at a local pastry shop, tasting a regional sweet before continuing on foot to a nearby kitchen. The ingredients you’ve just seen — and in some cases selected — shape a menu that includes a starter, main course, and dessert rooted in Portuguese culinary tradition. The experience concludes at the table, where you sit down together to enjoy the meal you’ve prepared, paired with regional wines.

This experiential tour introduces you to two of Kyoto’s most refined cultural and multi-sensorial heritages — incense and green tea — experienced side by side. At an aroma atelier, you’ll select natural ingredients that reflect your favorite scents and knead them into incense balls, a craft practiced since the Heian era. You’ll also assemble a simple burner from Kyoto-produced wood to take home. Along the way, you’ll handle and compare the fragrant materials used in kōdō — the “Way of Incense,” - and learn why Japanese incense is gently heated rather than burned to preserve its layered fragrance. 

Continue to a tea salon for a guided tasting of several teas paired with seasonal sweets, learning how aroma defines Kyoto’s tea culture. You’ll compare tea profiles, and see how water temperature and steep time shift sweetness, umami and astringency. Along the way, stop at specialty shops offering incense sachets, cases, and tea bowls, and contemporary creations that reinterpret tradition. 

Most travelers encounter tea or incense separately; this experience reveals the cultural dialogue between kōdō (the Way of Incense) and chadō (the Way of Tea). Food and aroma coordinator Ayumi Ikushima explains how incense prepares the space and the senses for tea — from room-scenting blends to the quiet focus required to “listen” to incense.
