You meet Paco, your local photographer-guide, at 8 PM and walk to the cemetary, one that Paco has chosen with intention. Candles flicker, marigolds glow, and the scent of copal rises. Paco briefs you on the etiquette of photographing the celebration: when to step back, when to ask, when to simply observe.

Inside, you move among pathways lined with altars of flowers, bread, mezcal, and photographs. The city of Iwatsuki, just outside of Tokyo, is one of Japan's major centers for Ningyo doll production. Much more than simple toys, the dolls are celebrated as works of arts created by master artisans preserving an important aspect of Japanese heritage. Your guide, Hiro, will introduce you to the world of Japanese dolls starting with a curated tour of a doll museum, where he will explain the history of ningyo dolls and their production process. 

After the museum, you'll enjoy lunch at a long-established restaurant with a vast doll collection heading to a master’s workshop, where you will learn the traditional technique of "kimekomi," pressing fabric into grooves carved in the doll's body to create clothing. Your teacher is a master artisan who has been maintaining the craft as part of many generations of craftspeople in Iwatsuki. Take your work home with you as a special souvenir.

Finally, you'll visit a local doll shop for more up-close viewing and shopping for ningyo dolls.

Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Madrid to Porto Between Lands

A road trip itinerary from Madrid to Porto via Toledo and Galicia, blending culture, drives, locals.

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the Antalya Museum, one of the country’s most important archaeological museums, showcasing thousands of years of history from ancient civilizations that once thrived in the region. Covering spanning prehistoric, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras, the museum is a treasure trove of artifacts, statues, and mosaics, many of which were discovered in nearby sites like Perge, Aspendos, and Termessos. With its well-curated exhibits and stunning sculptures, the Antalya Museum is a must-visit for history lovers.

4. The Children’s Section makes history engaging for younger visitors with interactive exhibits and miniature models of ancient cities.

5. The Ethnography Section highlights Ottoman-era artifacts, including traditional costumes, weaponry, and nomadic Yörük rugs, giving visitors a glimpse into Turkey’s cultural heritage.

Perched atop Mount Erice in Sicily, the Erice Castle, also known as the Castle of Venus, is a fortress steeped in myth and history. With origins dating back to the ancient Elymians, it later became a significant site during the Norman period. This castle also offers breathtaking views of the Sicilian landscape.
1: The castle's layered history is visible in its architecture, which reflects various eras – from the Elymian and Phoenician foundations to the Norman renovations. It was once a site dedicated to the worship of Venus Erycina, blending pagan rituals with Christian symbolism over the centuries.
2: The Norman influence is particularly prominent in the castle's fortifications and towers. These elements exemplify the strategic military importance of Erice during medieval times.
3: Erice Castle is steeped in mythology. It is said to be the home of the goddess Venus, making it a site of historical and mythological convergence.
4: The castle offers unparalleled views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Egadi Islands, and the city of Trapani. These vistas have made it a popular spot for photography and sightseeing.

Famous for its bronze cannons lined up along the sea wall, this scenic spot also served as a filming location for productions like Game of Thrones. A walk along the ramparts offers visitors a perfect blend of history, breathtaking views, and incredible photo opportunities.

Monks Valley

2 - Created during the Republic of Fra' Girolamo Savonarola in 1494, the Salone dei Cinquecento is the most significant room in Palazzo Vecchio. Originally basic and almost devoid of decoration, it was later chosen by Piero Soderini for grand murals by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, depicting the Republic's victories. Although these works were never completed, their initiation marked a high point in Renaissance art. When the Medici returned to power in 1540, they transformed the Salone into a symbol of ducal authority. Giorgio Vasari was tasked with its renovation, elevating the ceiling and adding a coffered structure with forty-two panels.
