Sanja Matsuri has roots dating back to the 7th century and is considered one of the largest and wildest festivals in Japan. It’s a rare opportunity to capture locals outside of everyday Japanese life — expressive, celebratory, and fully immersed in tradition.

Held on the third weekend of May every year (May 15-17 in 2026) at Asakusa Shrine, the festival takes over the neighborhood for three full days of parades, music, dancing and ritual. At the center are the mikoshi — portable shrines carried on the shoulders of teams of bearers, who shout and sway as they move through narrow streets.

You’ll be drawn to the raw energy of the crowds, the emotion on the faces of the mikoshi bearers, and the visual richness of the traditional wear — from happi coats to tabi socks. The festival offers a sense of controlled chaos that makes for powerful street photography and a deeper understanding of Japanese culture in motion.

This workshop immerses you in the action with an expert photographer by your side to help you capture key moments during the event. Each Mikoshi — portable shrines carried by locals — is paraded through the narrow streets of Asakusa and around the historic Senso-ji Temple district, an area rich in tradition and culture.

Step inside a historic Andalusian home that’s held four generations of stories—and now, the scent of freshly pressed olive oil. This 2.5-hour experience, led by Maria Reyes, invites you into her family’s 1909 home in Alcalá de Guadaíra, just 20 minutes from Seville. 

In a space once owned by a local priest and lovingly preserved, you'll explore the deep-rooted culture of olive oil in Spain—from ancient traditions to today’s refined methods. You’ll taste early-harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)—pressed in October from the season’s first green fruits. Reyes compares olives to people: “In October, they’re green. Now they’re golden. They change with time.” That first harvest is the most vibrant and prized. 

Taste three unique varieties from Jaén, and learn how to identify quality through scent, flavor, and color. With local food pairings and stories from the land itself, this is a living piece of Andalusian heritage.

This is a homecoming you share with Maria Reyes. Her family’s land in Linares, Jaén, has produced oil for generations. This exploration of three lesser-known, evocative temple gardens in Kyoto offers a deep understanding of Japanese dry landscape design — where every stone, every line of raked gravel, carries meaning. Led by certified garden designer and author Ayumi Ikushima, the experience opens a thoughtful path into the philosophy and form of Zen gardens.

You’ll begin at the Crane and Turtle Garden where Ayumi introduces the foundational principles of Japanese garden design: symbolism, placement, interplay between nature and intention. 

A short walk takes you to a second temple where the garden reflects nature in miniature — a landscape composed to invite observation. You’ll learn to see and photograph the space mindfully.

Your final stop is a larger temple with a modern take on the tradition. A resident monk leads a meditation in view of the garden, offering how stillness and landscape are meant to interact. Then, you'll sit with Ayumi over tea and seasonal sweets to reflect and ask questions.

Peka is one of the best known traditional Croatian dishes, despite looking simple at first, Peka requires a lot of skills and experience. At first glance, a peka seems like such a simple accessory – a domed lid shaped like a dome. Food cooked under peka, be it in a fireproof pot under the coals or directly on a stone slab, is a hearty meat and vegetable dish. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Anafiotika Neighborhood

There’s not much that has changed in this Square in its millennium of existence. 

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of what you’ll find: Percussionists, Acrobats, Fortune-tellers, Conjurers, Gnawa musicians, Henna tattoo artists, Food Vendors, Snake charmers, Potion peddlers, Un-winnable carnival games. 

As dusk settles over Marrakech, look up at the sky. Follow the direction of what looks like a bonfire of epic proportions. When you manage to edge past the thousands of people, you realize it’s only smoke from kebabs and snails at over a hundred barbecue stalls, staffed by some of the busiest chefs and unflappable crews you’ll ever see.

Look around the Square and locate a restaurant with a balcony. Buy a glass of mint tea and grab a coveted plastic chair at the edge of the balcony to see the grand view of the world’s largest human tableau play out below.

Glorious Mayhem

Mexico City, Mexico, is home to the vibrant Coyoacán Neighborhood, a bohemian district known for its cobblestone streets, colorful colonial architecture, and rich artistic history. Once a rural village, Coyoacán has retained its small-town charm despite being part of the sprawling capital. It’s famously associated with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, whose legacies are deeply embedded in the neighborhood’s cultural fabric. Today, it’s a lively hub for art lovers, foodies, and anyone seeking a more relaxed, authentic side of Mexico City.

Coyoacán Neighborhood

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

Fes Medina: Bab To Bab

Trieste, Italy, is home to the awe-inspiring Grotta Gigante, one of the largest accessible caves in the world. Hidden beneath the rugged Karst Plateau, this natural wonder boasts a colossal underground chamber measuring 98 meters high, 76 meters wide, and 167 meters long. The sheer size and grandeur of the cave make it a paradise for geology lovers, adventurers, and photographers alike. With its dramatic stalactites, towering stalagmites, and mesmerizing rock formations, Grotta Gigante offers a breathtaking journey into the depths of the Earth.

1. Inside the cave, an enormous underground hall creates a jaw-dropping spectacle, with cathedral-like dimensions that earned Grotta Gigante a spot in the Guinness World Records as the largest show cave in the world open to tourists.

4. Hidden inside the cave, scientific instruments monitor underground movements as part of international geophysical research, making Grotta Gigante not just a natural wonder but also an important site for studying Earth’s seismic activity.

5. The cave maintains a cool temperature of around 11°C (52°F) year-round, making it a refreshing escape from the summer heat or a fascinating visit in any season.

Visitor Tip: Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the steps can be steep and slightly slippery. Bring a light jacket, even in summer, as the cave remains chilly inside.

Santa Teresa Gallura

San Spiridione Church is a testament to the city's multiculturalism. This magnificent Serbian Orthodox church, dedicated to Saint Spyridon, a Greek Cypriot saint, showcases a splendid Byzantine style that dates back to 1869, reflecting the city's unique position at the crossroads of Europe's major ethnic and religious communities. Top highlights:
1 - The church's striking appearance, with its multi-domed structure, captures the essence of Byzantine architecture. Constructed from pearly white Istrian stone, the large central dome is flanked by four hemispherical cupolas. The front façade is adorned with nine statues by Milanese artist Emilio Bisi, each contributing to the church's grandeur and artistic significance.
2 - The interior of San Spiridione is a realm of tranquility and beauty. The iconostasis, adorned with mid-nineteenth-century icons painted in Moscow and later covered in pure silver and gold plate, signifies the church's historical and spiritual depth.
