With Marco's expert guidance, you'll explore the city's enchanting alleyways, hidden spots and secretive sides seldom seen by visitors, all while honing your photography skills. From pre-arranged shooting sessions with elaborately costumed models in secluded locations to sunrise/sunset captures in emblematic squares, this workshop offers a comprehensive journey through Carnevale's splendor. 

The Venice Carnevale has deep-rooted origins dating back to the era of the "Serenissima." The zenith of Venice's opulence in the sixteenth century witnessed lavish festivities, where the anonymity afforded by masks blurred societal distinctions among citizens, fostering a unique sense of equality across class, age, and wealth. This experience is very special, as it captures the true ethos of Carnevale. 

Through a carefully curated 24-hour itinerary spread over three days, you are immersed in the art and culture of Venice. Begin with three days in Barcelona, where Manila recommends focusing not on checklists but on rhythm: explore historic neighborhoods, check out design ateliers, sample Catalan cuisine, and seek out the quieter corners still alive with local tradition. | Head south into the wine country of Priorat, a lesser-known region with rolling hills and medieval villages. Stay in Siurana, a cliffside hamlet with sweeping views and access to local winemakers. | Continue to the Ebro Delta, one of Spain’s richest ecological regions. This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

If you want to explore Spain on foot, you should definitely set out on one of the pilgrimage routes through the country. All routes lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which is located in the northwest. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino de Santiago has been named a central point of cultural exchange – and a historical highlight that shows what medieval Spain looked like. We chose to follow the famous Camino Frances. The original 800km route takes 5 weeks, but we decided to get in a little later, we only had 11 days, and opted for the route starting in the Galician town of Sarria. Along the way, you'll meet many other tourist pilgrims, but you'll also be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and taste Spain's best delicacies (tapas, seafood, and Spanish Serrano ham). Be prepared for a lot of walking – and take the best walking boots you have. We’ve enjoyed every minute, but some people we met had the wrong equipment, complaining about blisters.

It’s Halloween time in Beacon Hill in Boston. After much consideration, I decide that I am too old to collect candy from my generous neighbors.

So I pick up my camera instead and wander through Boston’s most historic neighborhood to celebrate its annual Halloween tradition.

Since the 1970s, this is one day when the charming tree-lined streets of Beacon Hill get packed ..
 
.. with costumed pets and people, infants dressed as pumpkins to the elderly dressed in traditional witching gear.

Watch out for the brooms. 

I run into a friend dressed up as Jamie Lannister from the Game of Thrones, complete with chopped arm hanging around his neck.

Beacon Hill has the perfect Halloween atmosphere with the wrought iron, cobblestones, narrow alleys and seriously all-out decoration.

So, trick or treat?

San Spiridione Church is a testament to the city's multiculturalism. This magnificent Serbian Orthodox church, dedicated to Saint Spyridon, a Greek Cypriot saint, showcases a splendid Byzantine style that dates back to 1869, reflecting the city's unique position at the crossroads of Europe's major ethnic and religious communities. Top highlights:
1 - The church's striking appearance, with its multi-domed structure, captures the essence of Byzantine architecture. Constructed from pearly white Istrian stone, the large central dome is flanked by four hemispherical cupolas. The front façade is adorned with nine statues by Milanese artist Emilio Bisi, each contributing to the church's grandeur and artistic significance.
2 - The interior of San Spiridione is a realm of tranquility and beauty. The iconostasis, adorned with mid-nineteenth-century icons painted in Moscow and later covered in pure silver and gold plate, signifies the church's historical and spiritual depth. 
3 - Highlights include a votive vigil lamp gifted by Paul I of Russia, a stunning crucifixion at the altar, and a shroud made in 1772 in gold embroidery on silk velvet canvas. These pieces, alongside valuable candleholders and a mysterious sword believed to be a gift from Maximilian, Archduke of Austria, add layers of intrigue and splendor. Look for candleholders donated by Risto Škuljević, a ship owner and philanthropist, and numerous other items of significant religious, historical, and artistic importance.
4 - Visitors often comment on the church's unique Eastern Orthodox features, such as the central altar and painted ceilings, which offer an immersive experience into a different spiritual and cultural world, unusual for Italy.
Located in the heart of Trieste at Via Spiridione, 9, the church is easily accessible, with a bus stop within 100 meters. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 08.30 to 12.30 and 16.00 to 19.00, and on Sunday from 08.30 to 12.30.

San Spiridione Church

Barcelona, Spain, is home to the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), a spectacular museum showcasing one of the most comprehensive collections of Catalan art in the world. Museu Nacional de Catalunya

Karaköy, one of Istanbul’s oldest port neighborhoods, has undergone a vibrant transformation, becoming a hub of creativity and modern culture while retaining its historic charm. Located near the Galata Bridge and along the Bosphorus, this district offers an eclectic mix of street art, trendy eateries, and boutique stores. Karaköy’s energy is contagious, making it an essential stop for anyone looking to experience Istanbul’s dynamic blend of old and new.

1. Street Art Wonderland: Stroll through the district to find walls adorned with bold, colorful murals and graffiti by local and international artists. Each piece adds a touch of modern flair to Karaköy’s historic streets.

Surrounded by rolling hills and terraced vineyards, this small town offers a perfect blend of history, gastronomy, and natural beauty. It’s an essential stop for wine enthusiasts eager to taste some of Spain’s finest DOQ Priorat and DO Montsant wines, as well as for travelers seeking a relaxing, authentic Catalan experience.


1. Wine Tourism: Visit renowned wineries like Celler de Capçanes and Clos Mogador for tours and tastings of Garnacha and Cariñena wines, famous for their rich, full-bodied character.

Falset

Essaouira, Morocco, is home to the enchanting Essaouira Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its unique blend of Moroccan, Berber, Arab, and European architectural influences. Built in the 18th century and designed by French engineer Théodore Cornut, the medina’s grid-like layout and fortified walls reflect a rare fusion of European military design with traditional Islamic architecture. With its whitewashed buildings, blue-shuttered windows, and maze of cobbled streets, the medina offers an unforgettable experience for culture lovers, shoppers, and photographers alike.


1. Narrow, winding alleys lined with artisan shops selling handcrafted goods, including woodwork, jewelry, woven textiles, and traditional Moroccan ceramics.

Essaouira Medina

I have traveled to Moab, Utah on more than one occasion and every time it has been an absolute blast! This small, more local town is home to some amazing things that you can’t find anywhere else. 

There is a place there that I travel to every time called Mill Creek Canyon. It is a short hike to a watering hole that supplies the river you will have to cross more than once. Once you reach the watering hole, you will find an amazing view and usually many friendly people depending on what time you go. 

Now, it can get pretty hot in Utah so don’t forget the water and the sunblock, as well as a swimming suit!

The main attraction there is the cliff jumping! You can climb up the small waterfall and there will be a small ledge where you can jump from into the freezing water below. Let me tell you, it’s an absolute blast that you will never forget! 

I highly recommend this location to all people, even if you’re just passing through

Loutro Village

Fez, Morocco, is home to the Karaouine Mosque and University, one of the most significant religious and educational institutions in the Islamic world. Founded in 859 AD, it is recognized by UNESCO and the Guinness World Records as the oldest continually operating university in the world. This architectural and spiritual masterpiece has long been a center of knowledge, attracting scholars from across the Muslim world. While non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, its stunning green-tiled roofs, intricate stucco work, and grand archways can be admired from various viewpoints in Fez’s medina.

1. The exquisite courtyard, adorned with delicate mosaics and marble fountains, reflects traditional Moroccan craftsmanship and serves as a peaceful retreat for worshippers and students.

5. From nearby terraces and rooftops, panoramic views of the mosque’s green roofs and minaret provide a stunning perspective of Fez’s historic skyline.

Visitor Tip: For the best views, visit the Bou Inania Madrasa or nearby cafés that offer rooftop terraces overlooking the mosque complex. Early morning visits provide the best lighting for photography.

Karaouine Mosque

Lagos, Portugal, offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and coastal charm. Known for its role in Portugal’s Age of Discovery, Lagos boasts a rich history seen in its cobbled streets, ancient city walls, and beautifully preserved architecture.
