Rachel is an artist and instructor based in Kyoto, Japan. Combining her formal Western art training with her ongoing studies of Eastern art traditions (such as sumi-e ink painting), her work is focused on expressively capturing the scenery of Kyoto en plein air.

Her watercolor paintings of Kyoto have been featured in the Kyoto Journal and her sumi-e paintings displayed in the Nippon Suibokuga Art Association's annual shows.

An experienced educator, she has offered on-site sketching and painting classes in Kyoto for over 7 years, working with a full range of ages and experience levels. Her instruction style is personalized and supportive, aimed at giving participants both the practical skills and confidence to continue creating art of their own.

Her philosophy is that by taking time to sketch and paint, whether while traveling or in daily life, one can forge a special relationship with one's surroundings and make unforgettable memories.

Mexico

This is a rare opportunity to learn about the ancient cultural significance and rich history of candle making in an Indigenous Zapotec community. You'll experience the creative process of a master artisan who is at the heart of reviving this traditional art form in this community. 

You'll learn how these intricate works are made and even try your hand at beeswax flower making. A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You'll also discover how these candles have long played a key role in marriage proposals and other local traditions in this village.

Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. In speaking with Maestra Viviana, you’ll gain insight into the realities faced by women of her era in this community, hear about her challenges and triumphs, and understand how both the local culture and her own life have evolved. In this experience, you visit a premier soroban academy near Tokyo that has a reputation for training students who compete at a high level in national soroban competitions. Greece

This historical walk maps Thessaloniki’s transformation from antiquity to the present day. It begins at the Trigoniou Tower on the northern wall, where sweeping views set the stage for an itinerary shaped by centuries of change. From there, the path along the Byzantine fortifications leads to the monastery of Vlatadon, tied to the memory of St Paul’s presence, before descending toward landmarks that reveal the city’s complex past.

The route descends to the small church of Osios David, where you step inside. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”

Dramatic: Lovrijenac Fortress

Seferihisar and Sığacık, Turkey’s first “Cittaslow” towns, offer a peaceful escape from modern hustle. Known for their relaxed pace of life, cobblestone streets, and local artisan markets, they embrace slow living while preserving their rich cultural heritage. The tranquil seaside views and welcoming atmosphere make them perfect for a quiet getaway.

The Ribeira District and Barredo Quarter together form a captivating and historical area along the Douro River in Porto. This picturesque neighborhood is celebrated for its cultural vibrancy, architectural beauty, and riverside charm. Highlights include:

The coastal towns near Begur, such as Calella de Palafrugell, Tamariu, and Llafranc, offer some of the most picturesque seaside scenery in Catalonia. With charming whitewashed buildings, crystal-clear waters, and sandy coves, these towns are perfect for a relaxing getaway.
1. The beaches, surrounded by pine forests and cliffs, are ideal for swimming and sunbathing.
2. Coastal paths, like the Camí de Ronda, provide scenic hiking opportunities between coves.
3. The towns feature waterfront restaurants serving fresh seafood and local specialties.
4. Quiet harbors and traditional fishing boats add to the region’s charm.
5. The area’s laid-back vibe makes it an excellent destination for unwinding and enjoying the Mediterranean lifestyle.

Coastal Towns Near Begur

The Museu do Oriente in Lisbon, inaugurated in 2008, is a testament to Portugal's historical maritime connections with Asia. Housed in a transformed bacalhau warehouse along the Tagus river, the museum showcases the profound cultural exchanges between Portugal and the Asian continent. Why we recommend visiting:
1 - The museum's two main collections encapsulate the essence of this cultural fusion. The first collection highlights the Portuguese presence in Asia with over a thousand pieces, including rare Namban art, Chinese and Japanese folding screens, and an extensive porcelain collection. The second, the Kwok On Collection, features over 13,000 pieces related to Asian performing arts, extending from Turkey to Japan, with a special focus on Hinduism, Buddhism, and other Eastern spiritual traditions.
2 - The museum's location, in a former bacalhau factory dating back to 1940, speaks to its unique architectural design. Transformed with a €30-million investment, the museum now boasts a striking exterior and an interior that seamlessly integrates the building's original industrial features with modern museum spaces.

Museu do Oriente

On a sunrise photo-walk, we are at Piazza San Marco. At 5AM, it’s empty, other than for a few pigeons, and a photo enthusiast like ourselves. And we run across - with tripods - to get to the Canal looking out towards San Giorgio Maggiore Island.

Our objective? To watch and photograph gondolas swaying in the canals of Venice. It’s perfect for long exposure shots. The gondolas and docks are lit up by street lights and the sky has the perfect blend of dark and light.

We then rush over to the vaporetto stand near Europa & Regina Hotel overlooking Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, for another Gondola scene (pictured) while the light is still good.

So, how many gondolas can you get into one frame?

We head out down the Grand Canal to the Rialto Fish Market. Some sellers are packing up after a good morning, but we’re able to get some great shots of everyday life. 

We walk back over Rialto bridge (great for photos of activity on the Canal) back to the hotel for breakfast.

How Many Gondolas?

What does the southern end of the world look like? After five and a half l-o-n-g hours from Punta Arenas, out of the blue appears Hotel Explora Salto Chico - and it’s breathtaking. With a stunning, modern countenance, views-to-die-for of Torres del Paine (the Towers) and Cuernos del Paine (the Horns), and the sound of the Salto Chico waterfall as we linger over amazing food and excellent Chilean wine.

The Explora guides ensure they get us out of bed. My favorite experience - a day-long hike to Grey glacier. And when we get really close, our guides hop into a little boat to fetch thousand-year-old ice from the glacier for little drinks of Pisco Sour! 

Patagonia’s Parc Nacional Torres del Paine has picture postcard views everywhere. If you are a keen hiker, try the Circuit or the W. I stick to day hikes as a rule - if you are like me, try Grey Glacier, French Valley Glacier or Base of the Paine Towers.
