Enjoy a guided walk through the district of Ribeira in Porto, the city’s historic riverfront quarter. This tour tells the story of the city and its trades: port and cod. You meet at Cathedral Hill, where the city began, and descend crooked medieval streets toward its ancestral harbor.

You walk through what was once the sailors’ and merchants’ town, stopping at the oldest house in Porto that still stands and the only remaining gate of the long-gone city walls. Along the way, you are welcomed as family into a tiny tavern to taste a simple but delicious cod dish.

Port wine is part of the journey as well. You count the port lodges across the river, learn about the rabelo boats that once carried barrels to and from the Douro Valley, and peek into the last remaining shipyard on the Gaia riverbank. The Mafra Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the most important Baroque structure (and the largest building) in Portugal. It was commissioned by King Dom João V in the 18th century, funded by the wealth coming from Brazil. The complex is organized around central interior courtyards, where the Basilica, Convent, and Palace meet and intersect. This architectural complex represents one of the artistic, architectural, and cultural highlights of Portugal.

The Mafra Palace-Basilica-Convent is unique for its scale, sumptuousness, and quality of architecture and decoration. Some highlights include the Infirmary, the Throne Hall, and the Library, which holds about 35,000 rare books. The Basilica is adorned with a unique collection of Italian Baroque statues (the largest outside Italy), six historical pipe organs, and two carillons composed of nearly 100 bells.

The building is also a very important landmark in Portuguese history. It originally reflected the wealth and power of King João V but also represents the lives of several other kings who spent time there, in the surrounding gardens or the nearby royal hunting park. King Manuel II spent his last night in Portugal in one of its rooms before leaving the kingdom forever after the fall of the monarchy in 1910, departing from the nearby Ericeira village beach.

The Cerco Garden stands on one of the flanks of the Convent-Palace. Initially designed and inspired by Versailles, only a small part of the garden was completed. Despite this, it remains a very pleasant space, featuring a century-old irrigation noria, reflective water mirrors, a vegetable medicinal garden once used by monks, and a leafy park surrounding it.

Cerco Garden serves as the perfect transition between the vast, walled former Royal Hunting area, known as Tapada Real, and the monumental Convent-Palace. It beautifully combines nature, agriculture, and gardening. The forest and gardens span over eight hectares, offering shady corners, waterfalls, and even a unique vegetable garden—Horta dos Frades—where plants were once used to produce medicinal products during the Convent’s time.

Sculptor José Franco (1920–2009) dedicated his life to the art of modeling clay, creating a village that perfectly captures the essence of regional life. This life-sized village includes typical buildings and activities, such as a windmill, butcher's shop, water mill, blacksmith's forge, threshing floor, tavern, and carpenter’s workshop, all reflecting the architecture and trades of the past.

This fascinating creation showcases a world where traditional crafts, trades, and furniture that have long disappeared from the region come back to life through detailed clay models, offering visitors a window into a way of life that no longer exists.

DAY 2 – THE BOTANICAL QUINTA | Spend the day exploring the valley’s heart with Carlos and Paulo. Begin with a silent cruise along the Douro aboard a solar-powered boat, then ride in a restored vintage Bedford van up the terraced hills to a working vineyard and botanical estate. 1: Salt Harvesting Tradition: The salt pans showcase a centuries-old method of salt harvesting. Sea water is channeled into shallow ponds and left to evaporate, leaving behind high-quality sea salt. 
2: Eco-System and Wildlife: The area is a thriving ecosystem, attracting a diverse range of bird species, especially during the migration seasons. Flamingos, herons, and storks are common sights, making it a fantastic spot for birdwatching.
3: Windmills and Museums: Scattered across the salt pans are iconic windmills, once used to pump water and grind the harvested salt. Some of these windmills have been converted into museums, providing insights into the history and process of salt production. We also recommend visiting the Salt Museum of Saline Culcasi, located in the Nubia district, this museum is a vivid testament to the harmonious relationship between the sea and the land.

The Wine Museum Koutsoyannopoulos, located in Vothonas village, is a fascinating underground museum that tells the story of Santorini’s rich winemaking heritage. Set in a natural cave eight meters below ground and stretching 300 meters long, this family-run museum offers a unique journey through the history, culture, and traditions of winemaking on the island. It’s an immersive experience perfect for wine lovers and anyone curious about Santorini’s unique volcanic terroir. 
1. The underground museum takes visitors through a series of exhibits showcasing winemaking equipment, tools, and scenes from the daily lives of Santorini’s vintners from the 17th to 20th centuries. 
2. Life-sized dioramas and audio guides (available in multiple languages) bring the history of winemaking to life, with engaging stories and vivid details. 
3. A highlight of the visit is the wine tasting session, where you can sample four local wines, including the island’s famous Assyrtiko and Vinsanto, crafted by the Koutsoyannopoulos family winery. 
4. The museum provides insight into the unique challenges of volcanic wine production, showcasing how Santorini’s harsh environment has shaped its winemaking techniques and traditions. 
5. The on-site shop offers an excellent selection of Santorini wines and souvenirs for wine enthusiasts to take home.

Santorini Wine Museum

The Dubrovnik Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is a monumental baroque masterpiece in the heart of Dubrovnik, Croatia. Rebuilt in 1713 after the devastating earthquake of 1667, it showcases architectural grandeur and houses a rich treasury of relics and art, including works by the renowned Italian painter Titian.
