Kimono-expert Dr. Sheila Cliffe opens both her home and her closet to guests in this highly detailed, hands-on workshop exploring the beauty of kimono and the textiles used to create them. 

In the first half of this experience, Sheila will show you the full range of a kimono wardrobe, from the most formal styles worn on special occasions to casual and informal pieces that were once suitable to wear daily. She selects the pieces from her vast collection in a variety of patterns and materials, including rare and expensive weaves from remote parts of Japan. Next, you will be treated to an showing and explanation of a variety of obi, the ornate "belts" that act as both tie and accessory for the obi. Finally, Sheila will show you her rare collection of textile pattern books and hand-embroidered collars from a century or more of kimono history.

Portugal

This walking tour traces Lisbon’s history through the eyes of the women who helped shape the city and its cultural waves. It begins at the Kit Garden, where Joana Vasconcelos’s striking red sculpture was created to bring people together. From there, you’ll head toward the Mouraria and Alfama districts, where narrow alleys were once filled with the voices of the varinas, the fishmongers who carried the day’s catch through the streets, and the fado singers who turned everyday struggle into haunting songs. 

You’ll pause for a coffee and light snack at a traditional café before continuing to Baixa, where Vos will uncover how homes and livelihoods were rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. It’s the birthplace of chocolate 🍫 and there are several museums that teach how the Mayans made ‘the food of the gods’. Adjoining chocolate cafes serve decadent treats and chocolate liqueur.

The coffee ☕️ is divine too and apart from sampling the local shops, we visited a local plantation to learn about coffee making.

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

Trieste, Italy, is home to the Risiera di San Sabba, a former rice mill turned Nazi concentration camp during World War II. As the only Nazi extermination camp in Italy, it serves as a chilling yet essential reminder of one of history’s darkest periods. Today, the site operates as a museum and memorial, honoring the thousands of political prisoners, partisans, and Jewish victims who were imprisoned, tortured, and deported from this location. Walking through the stark, somber complex offers a powerful and deeply moving experience.


1. At the entrance, a vast, empty courtyard evokes a haunting sense of history, where prisoners once stood before being interrogated or deported to Auschwitz and other camps. The atmosphere is solemn and reflective.

2. Inside the museum, exhibits display personal belongings, historical documents, and testimonies from survivors and victims, providing an in-depth look at the horrors that took place here.

3. In the remains of the former crematorium, visitors can see the chilling site where bodies were burned after executions. The original structure was destroyed by retreating Nazis in an attempt to hide evidence of their crimes.

4. Along the walls, prison cells used for interrogation and solitary confinement remain preserved, offering a stark reminder of the suffering endured by those who were held here.

5. The steel memorial sculpture, designed by architect Romano Boico, stands as a tribute to the victims, its cold, industrial design reflecting the brutal reality of the site’s past.

Visitor Tip: Visit with an open heart and allow time to reflect. The museum is free to enter, and audio guides are available to provide deeper historical context.

Risiera di San Sabba

Staying at the Inn at Death Valley, we thought we would be able to get up just before sunrise and make a dash over to Zabriskie Point. In hind sight, we should have woken up a good 60 minutes earlier, since the viewpoint was packed with people as we got there. 


The stunning views of the badlands slowly fill up with yellow, orange, purple and brown colors - and every hue in between - as the sun comes up, totally makes up for the early rise. Once the sun has finished painting the badlands, it reaches out to color in the Panamint Range across the valley with gorgeous pinks and purples. If you want to avoid the crowds, do the 2.5 mile Badlands Loop hike. Right after the walk, you can drive the short 3 mile Twenty Mule Team Canyon loop drive before returning to Stovepipe Wells for breakfast. 

We had been told that the Death Valley National Park is all about extremes - and the Zabriskie Point is a visual representation of that.
