What is this?

As night falls over Tokyo, the Ueno district transforms into a living manuscript of its post-war history. Far from the neon-bright Tokyo found in guidebooks, this immersive journey takes you through the "layers of disorder" born of the 1945 black markets. Under the guidance of street documentary photographer Yusuke Nagata, you will navigate the chaotic, back alleys of a district where izakayas spill onto the pavement and Korean-founded markets maintain a grit long lost to modernization. After spending two hours working the shadows of these unplanned streets, capturing the raw, unscripted theater of the nightlife, you'll conclude the evening at a local Ueno establishment to dissect your work and learn how to edit your images for impact. Whether you are learning techniques like zone focusing or refining your approach to capturing the "decisive moment," this experience is a masterclass in seeing the streets of Tokyo as few others can.

What makes this unique?

For the traveler who finds beauty in the "unplanned," this experience offers an intellectual and aesthetic depth beyond that of a simple photowalk. Unlike the hyper-commercialized facades of Shinjuku's Kabukicho, the parts of Ueno you visit with Yasuke remain largely invisible to the foreign eye. This is "raw Tokyo" — a community-centric labyrinth where the culture still reflects the frantic, organic survivalism of 1945. The value lies in the host's perspective. Yusuke Nagata is not a tour guide; he is a practicing artist whose work on human society has been exhibited at the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts. You aren't just taking photos; you are learning the philosophy of documenting a living culture. This is a rare opportunity to bridge the gap between tourist and documentarian, learning both the technical knowledge of how to approach and photograph your subjects, and a profound understanding of Tokyo's socio-historical evolution.

What is the profile of the host?

Yusuke Nagata is a Tokyo-based photographer and zine maker who documents human society, primarily through street photography. He works in film and darkroom prints. Widely regarded as a Japan street photography expert by international audiences, he founded Tokyo Street Photography Club in 2018 to build a community of street photographers in Tokyo. In 2023, Yusuke launched the community-based brand FAR EAST DARKROOM, an independent platform publishing zines and prints by emerging photographers from Japan and across Asia for a global audience. His work has been featured in Time Out Tokyo, Japan Camera Hunter, and Fisheye Magazine, and exhibited at venues including Place M in Shinjuku and Taiwan Photo. Yusuke's passion and willingness to help fellow photographers dive deep into urban street photography make him the right host for discovering an alternative side of Tokyo life.

What to bring?

Any camera — all levels welcome. Film photographers are welcome too. If you bring a digital camera, you'll be able to get direct feedback from Yusuke on your photos during the break after the shooting session.

Where is this located?

Where will we meet?

Outside JR Ueno Station's Hirokoji exit, you'll see a Starbucks on your right. Meet Yusuke at the foot of the stairs to the pedestrian overpass, directly across from Starbucks.
