This hands-on craft experience is hosted a kintsugi artisan, Satoko, who has been teaching the art and philosophy of this traditional Japanese technique in Kyoto for several years.

The workshop begins with a relaxing tea time, during which you'll be able to get to know your host and learn about her background in kintsugi. From there, you'll learn the history and aesthetics of kintsugi while handling finished pieces created by your host. As you admire the gold-lined cracks, Satoko will walk you through each step of the process and introduce the traditional tools and materials you’ll use — including some that you’ll prepare by hand.

Then, it’s time to practice. You’ll repair a broken ceramic piece using lacquer and real gold powder — that draws the eye to the details. Throughout the session, your hosts offer individual guidance to ensure your piece becomes a personal and beautiful expression of this philosophy.

Satoko emphasizes traditional kintsugi — using natural urushi lacquer, patient curing times, and deliberate methods rather than shortcuts — to offer students an authentic, slow, and deeply rewarding experience. Joana Almeida, your guide, is a native of Loulé with a deep-rooted passion for nature inherited from her parents who were biologists by profession. With years of field experience and a deep-rooted passion for conservation, Joana guides visitors through Algarve’s natural settings with insightful commentary on both the flora and fauna that populate it. 

Chile

This 3.8 km (2.4 miles) hike is staged in the dramatic Vilama River Canyon, also known as Cactus Canyon or Cactus Valley. This volcanic canyon is carved by the junction of the Puritama River — which means "hot water" in the Kunza language — and the "cold water" Puripica River. This unique mix creates an oasis that supports the highest concentration of the giant, tree-like cactus species, Echinopsis Atacamensis (Cardón). 

After a 35-minute drive from San Pedro, the circuit usually takes between 2.5 to 3 hours. Although you'll maintain a leisurely pace, this trek has a "moderate difficulty" rating, and requires physical stability and hiking experience. The terrain is uneven at times and requires the occasional use of hands to navigate rocky boulders. The route involves several river crossings (summer rain sees the maximum water level reach knee-height) and high elevation/temperatures. These components foster an immersive hiking experience with high potential for spotting local birds. 

Cactus Valley is a living ecosystem where giant cacti have thrived for centuries. Those passionate about natural history will feel in their element here—particularly as your guide is an expert on the Atacama Desert's geology, flora, and fauna. While steering you through this surreal environment, Valeria will share her knowledge of the different formations and how the confluence of the "hot" and "cold" rivers created a one-of-a-kind ecosystem. She will point out native bird species feeding on the desert flora and bathing in the water. Sightings may include the greenish-yellow finch, the variable hawk, mountain parakeets, and the black-billed shrike tyrant.

Hiking in the Atacama Desert comes with challenges relating to the arid atmosphere and high elevation. Although rated "moderate", this hike proves far more engaging than the average sightseeing tour. Palau de la Música Catalana

Lion of Bavaria Monument

The Mayan culture is one of the most important indigenous cultures in Southern Mexico. Artifacts from bygone times stretch far across the jungles of Quintana Roos and Chiapas. 

If you want to learn more about how indigenous peoples lived before colonization, don't miss the ruins of Palenque. Arguably the largest Mayan ruins on the continent, they're tucked away, deeply hidden in the Mexican jungle. The highlights of the actual ruins are the numerous temples, a palace and aqueducts, and of course, a guided tour where you can learn all about Mexico's history. If you venture out into the jungle, you'll encounter rare wildlife like monkeys, colorful birds, and giant snakes.

Take sunscreen, plenty of water, and some snacks, as the tour takes at least half a day.

Visit Ancient Mayan Ruins

Colombia

A slow-paced night photo walk. On foot over odd shaped cobblestones. 

It does not start well as it starts raining even as we take a cab to Pantheon to meet our local photographer and lose a wallet in the cab. We miraculously get It back (another story) and we start our walk .. lethargic, in deference to summer, but still aware of art and life.

We walk from the Pantheon through Piazza Navona to Ponte Vittorio Emmanuel for views over to the Vatican.  The streets are wet, and Piazza Navona is teeming with Romans doing la passeggiata, an evening ritual I wish we could reapply in other cities. 

Later, joining the locals in their celebration of Summer along River Tiber (Lungo il Tivera Roma) well into midnight, it is easy to forget all about work and settle more definitively into a vacation frame-of-mind. 

Afterwards, a stroll to Campidoglio for priceless views of the illuminated Roman Forum, seems like just the thing to do.

To Rome, With Love

Palazzo Zuccari, located near the iconic Spanish Steps in Rome, stands out as a truly unique and whimsical architectural gem. Often referred to as the 'Monster House' due to its distinctive façade, this building is a delightful sight that never fails to bring a smile to those who pass by.

Ecuador

Visiting Quito, a detour should be made to the “ACTUAL Equator” museum. Only a 50 meters from where it was thought the equator passed, this used science to actually find the equator. The tour guide explains a bit about Ecuador and then shows why this is the center of the earth, with a few fun examples. The water really does flush in the opposite direction in the Southern Hemisphere and apparently this is due to the Earth’s centripetal force.

Valencia, Spain, is home to the Plaza de la Virgen, one of the city’s most picturesque and historic squares.
