Kalliopi and Thomas are a dynamic duo passionate about Athens, art, and urban exploration. Raised in opposite suburbs, fate brought them together, and now they call the historic district of Kerameikos home. Their journey into street art and creative expression started years ago and has flourished, especially since moving to downtown Athens.

They actively promote and support local artists, organize street art festivals, and have curated urban transformations by selecting artists and murals for key city spaces. Recently, they opened a creative hub to host events dedicated to art, fostering a vibrant community of creators.

Italy

Trace the evolving skyline of contemporary Milan through the lens of Emanuele, a professional photographer. This experience leads you through Porta Nuova, a district that has redefined the city’s skyline with its futuristic towers and bold urban design. Starting in the afternoon, you’ll explore iconic landmarks like the Unicredit Tower—the tallest skyscraper in Italy—and the award-winning Bosco Verticale, where vertical gardens transform residential buildings into living ecosystems.

As you move through the area, your guide will share tips on composition, perspective, and light, helping you capture the contrast between glass, steel, and greenery. Piazza Gae Aulenti becomes the stage for the final part of the experience, just as the lights come on and the atmosphere shifts. This walking tour explores San Sebastian’s cultural identity, maritime roots and architecture. It begins at Tabakalera, a former tobacco factory now transformed into a center for culture and creativity. From there, walk to the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, where a marble crucifix by renowned Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida offers a moment of stillness.

If visiting June to September, take a short boat ride to Santa Clara Island, where artist Cristina Iglesias has created a sculptural installation inside the lighthouse — a powerful encounter between art and sea.

She’s also a food lover who can recommend one of the city’s many Michelin-starred restaurants. When not guiding, she’s out exploring local art, culinary discoveries, and mountain trails across Euskadi.

This experience begins inside San Bernardino alle Ossa, a church like no other in Milan. It holds one of the city’s most unsettling spaces: an ossuary chapel lined floor to ceiling with human bones, creating a space suspended between devotion and disquiet. Created in the 12th century to house the remains from the nearby hospital’s overflowing cemetery, it still evokes questions about death, ritual and memory.

From here, the walk unfolds through the surrounding streets near the Università Statale—an area layered with centuries of medicine, mysticism and intellectual life. You’ll move between old hospital courtyards, academic buildings and silent corners.

The session is hosted by a professional Moroccan storyteller, a master in the art of narrative who has dedicated their career to preserving and sharing Morocco’s oral traditions. Trained in both classical storytelling techniques and modern performance arts, the host is skilled at captivating audiences of all ages. Accompanying the storyteller is a local musician, expert in traditional Moroccan instruments, who has performed in various cultural festivals and venues, adding a layer of authenticity and enchantment to the storytelling.

Mexico

This hands-on experience invites you to learn the art of traditional basket weaving from a fifth-generation artisan in his home workshop. You'll learn about the origins of his creative practice and make your own piece to take home, with his expert guidance throughout the process.

Basketry was one of the earliest crafts in Mesoamerica, predating the domestication of crops and handmade ceramics. Because this practice uses biodegradable materials, few historical remnants remain—so its history lives on through family traditions and storytelling. By learning about the skill, time, and dedication involved in creating these baskets, you'll help support local artisans through both financial investment and cultural preservation.

Your basket-making workshop will last roughly two hours. Afterward, you’ll continue the carrizo theme with a meal at a restaurant that serves Oaxacan tlayudas on handwoven carrizo plates.

These artisans are living examples of the role storytelling plays in preserving ancestral artistry. While basketry declined with the introduction of plastic, it still holds an essential place in the rural economy. Through intimate conversations with these makers, you'll gain insight into the cultural importance of carrizo baskets and what they mean to their young family.

These pieces are crafted from an invasive river reed that was once plentiful and easy to access. But with climate change extending the dry months, access is now limited during certain times of the year. You'll learn how this shift directly impacts both the basketry and the livelihoods of those who, like generations before them, depend on this tradition.

You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of the patience and skill this craft requires. A carrizo basket will no longer be just an object—it will represent family connection, resilience, and ongoing adaptation in changing times.

If you would like to purchase any art/craft pieces from the makers, it's always a good idea to bring some Mexican pesos, as cash is often preferred. That said, there's no pressure to buy anything during this visit.

Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

Portugal

This captivating seasonal walking tour in the Algarve's Barrocal region showcases the spectacular wild orchids that flourish here. Portugal boasts around 70 orchid species, with a significant variety found in this region, known for its botanical diversity and ecological significance. 

From February to May, the orchids begin to bloom, with the peak season between March and April. On this easy trail, you'll have the opportunity to discover several rare species, such as Bee Orchid, Bumblebee Orchid, and Woodcock Orchid, known for their unique adaptations and beauty.

The tour is designed to educate participants about the critical importance of orchid conservation. By understanding these plants' roles in their ecosystems and the challenges they face, you contribute to their ongoing preservation for future generations. Available only during the flowering season, this experience is both a visual delight and an engaging conversation about one of nature's most fascinating creations.

Orchids have existed for at least 30 million years, evolving intricate mechanisms to attract pollinators, some even mimicking insects. Certain species can take up to 20 years to bloom, highlighting their resilience and the delicate balance of their ecosystems. 

Depending on the season, you can witness a variety of orchids on this trail. This area is perfectly suited to these species due to its unique microclimates and diverse habitats, which provide the specific conditions each orchid needs to thrive.

Joining Joana, whose passion for scouting out and finding the hidden spots where Algarve's orchids flourish, makes the journey special. Her local expertise provides insights into the orchids' survival strategies and the threats they face from habitat destruction.

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

Toubkal National Park

In Marrakech, explore the labyrinth of the medina, lined with market stalls and craftspeople, and full of secret places and contradictions. 

Anonymous, windowless, fortress-like walls enclose luxurious riads built around tiled courtyards, complete with fountains and gardens.

Happily, my wonderful guide Khadija of Morocco Private Experience, encourages my curiosity. She leads the way across the medieval labyrinth of chaotic alleyways - to the souks where centuries-old skills continue to flourish. 

I am intrigued about how all the craftspeople are clustered together by trade. We watch a metal craftsman shape a pair of gnawa cymbals.
