Sanja Matsuri has roots dating back to the 7th century and is considered one of the largest and wildest festivals in Japan. It’s a rare opportunity to capture locals outside of everyday Japanese life — expressive, celebratory, and fully immersed in tradition.

Held on the third weekend of May every year (May 15-17 in 2026) at Asakusa Shrine, the festival takes over the neighborhood for three full days of parades, music, dancing and ritual. At the center are the mikoshi — portable shrines carried on the shoulders of teams of bearers, who shout and sway as they move through narrow streets.

You’ll be drawn to the raw energy of the crowds, the emotion on the faces of the mikoshi bearers, and the visual richness of the traditional wear — from happi coats to tabi socks. The festival offers a sense of controlled chaos that makes for powerful street photography and a deeper understanding of Japanese culture in motion.

This workshop immerses you in the action with an expert photographer by your side to help you capture key moments during the event. Each Mikoshi — portable shrines carried by locals — is paraded through the narrow streets of Asakusa and around the historic Senso-ji Temple district, an area rich in tradition and culture.

He'll have plenty of insights into the culture and energy of the Sanja Matsuri, as someone who’s photographed it many times before.

The Nada Gogo area of Kobe City holds special significance in the sake brewing world. Sake brewing began here nearly 700 years ago, predating the commercial production of sake by three centuries. With its refined knowledge of sake production, Nada Gogo eventually provided 80% of the commercial sake consumed in the old capital of Edo, now Tokyo.

You’ll begin your tour with an elegant lunch in a preserved traditional house before visiting three of Nada Gogo’s outstanding breweries to learn how to appreciate the taste of sake. Your host Eva will give you a deeper understanding of sake culture, visiting an exclusive location to learn how the traditional art of producing sake barrels is being preserved and a museum dedicated to the humble sake cup, whose shapes and materials affect the taste of its content more than you’d expect.


For sake connoisseurs, Nada Gogo represents the pinnacle of sake production, maintaining its world-class standards of delicately flavored sake for centuries. Step into a Kurdish family home in Istanbul for an intimate Dengbej storytelling and dinner experience. Dengbej is a traditional Kurdish music style where singers recount epic tales of history, love, and loss using only their voices in an a cappella-style performance. You’ll start with a neighborhood walk, getting to know the local Kurdish community, before gathering around the family table for a home-cooked Kurdish dinner, prepared by the host’s mother.

As you tuck into your meal, a professional singer will perform a variety of Dengbej songs that convey the struggles and resilience of the Kurdish people, reflecting their historical, social, and cultural experiences. Once forbidden during periods of repression in Turkey, Dengbej has survived through clandestine performances and oral transmission. This experience allows you to delve into the origins and nuances of this vibrant art form while hearing the stories of a Kurdish family based in Istanbul.

This half-day experience with women from the Shipibo-Konibo community of the Peruvian Amazon takes place minutes from the historic center of Lima, in the district of Rímac. After a short drive, you step into a living Amazonian culture in an urban setting, spending time chatting with artisan women over a basket of jungle fruits and taking part in an art workshop.

Over the past 25 years, people from the Shipibo-Konibo ethnic group have migrated from the jungle in search of economic opportunities while preserving their traditions, art, and language. Your experience begins with a warm welcome from a local artisan in her home, who introduces you to the meanings behind her intricate designs. These sacred patterns, known as “kené,” are inspired by nature and the life of the Shipibo-Konibo people in the Amazon. You then take part in a hands-on art workshop, learning to paint using natural pigments traditionally made from tree bark and plants.

You might not know that it is possible to encounter the Indigenous cultures of Amazonian Peru in the capital. Migration from Ucayali and other Amazon regions has been ongoing for decades.

Milagro Campos Llontop, Mila, is a Lima-based cultural guide, artist, and educator with over ten years of experience in heritage interpretation and socially responsible tourism. She studied Drawing and Painting at the National School of Fine Arts of Lima and holds a specialization in Sustainable Tourism.

She has worked at several museums and archaeological sites across Lima as a local guide and educational program designer and is one of the few official tour guides in the city specializing in Indigenous Folk Art. In 2022, Mila founded an art experience project in collaboration with master women artisans from the Shipibo-Konibo Amazonian community based in Lima. Working directly with the president of the community, the project supports cultural revitalization and generates direct economic income for more than 200 master women artisans. 

Italy

Perched above Florence on the hill of San Miniato al Monte, the Porte Sante Cemetery offers one of the most striking views of the city. It is also an open-air museum, rich in artworks and fascinating stories. You’ll walk through its monumental grounds, where over 150 years of history are carved in Carrara marble, and see family chapels echoing Florence’s greatest churches.

As you move among the tombs, Claudia will share the lives of those who rest here. Some are well-known figures, like Carlo Collodi, author of Pinocchio. Others are lesser-known but had lives that deserve to be remembered, with stories that reveal the spirit of their times. The cemetery becomes a lens to explore the ideals, artistry, and aspirations of Florentine society.

You’ll end the walk inside the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte, a medieval jewel that crowns the city. One of Florence’s oldest churches, it’s a Romanesque masterpiece filled with mosaics, frescoes, and solemn beauty.

Claudia Vannucci is a licensed tour guide based in Florence, where she has been sharing her knowledge and passion for over ten years. She lives and breathes her city every day, bringing its stories to life through a unique mix of historical insight and personal connection.

Alongside her work as a guide, Claudia is also an architecture historian and travel writer, with a special interest in how stories and memories are rooted in place. 

One of her deepest passions is the study of cemeteries—a subject she has researched for years and written two books about. With a curious mind and a storyteller’s spirit, Claudia delights in discussing everything from Renaissance art to Florentine cuisine, with occasional detours into the world of horror movies and true crime.

The soroban, or Japanese abacus, has been used in Japan for centuries and remains a living tool for calculation, concentration, and memory. In recent years, its popularity has grown again as people seek more tactile alternatives to digital methods.

In this experience, you visit a premier soroban academy near Tokyo that has a reputation for training students who compete at a high level in national soroban competitions. At the academy, you join the class itself, learning the techniques of this mental conditioning tool alongside young students and discovering how this training sharpens concentration, memory, and speed. 

As part of the visit, you assemble your own soroban before class and use it during the lesson, so the experience can continue later as a daily practice. 

Along the way, you have the chance to observe how teaching and encouragement unfold inside a Japanese classroom, while speaking naturally with both the teacher and students and exchanging cultural points of view.

Meet Hiro at the ticket gate of Wakaba Station on the Tobu Tojo line, about an hour by train from central Tokyo.

Hiro Miyaoka is a Saitama native with deep knowledge of the local culture. After a 38-year career as a high school social studies teacher, he transitioned into tour guiding, drawing on his passion and expertise in history, culture, and education to serve his guests. Hiro’s extensive knowledge of local traditions and his skill in storytelling make him a strong ambassador for sharing the charms of Saitama’s traditional industries with both domestic and international guests.

The lesson and class are led by Risa Sato, a veteran instructor at the academy who has taught and coached scores of soroban students, including high-level competitors in national competitions.

This curated half-day tour begins at the edges of Arashiyama, away from the crowds, in a moss-covered temple filled with 1,200 small stone figures. Each has a different expression — some joyful, some quietly watching. They were carved by ordinary people under the guidance of a Buddhist sculptor. Your guide will share how this once-forgotten temple became a place of devotion and playfulness.

You’ll visit Giōji Temple, a quiet sanctuary tied to the Heike Monogatari, where a once-famous dancer became a nun. The moss garden and bamboo groves here feel like a story being slowly told.

From there, you walk through the preserved district of Saga Toriimoto, where Meiji-era townhouses now hold small family-run craft shops. You’ll visit two: a papermaker using mulberry bark and centuries-old techniques and an indigo-dyeing store.
