Guided by Cengiz Özek, a shadow theatre master, you’ll learn about the roots of this traditional art popularized in the Ottoman Empire and considered an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2009. Karagöz performances were a staple of Ottoman life, used as a platform for satire and social commentary, often held in coffeehouses and public squares​. 

During this hands-on workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to visit Cengiz’s atelier and craft your own shadow figure using traditional materials like camel leather. Afterward, you’ll perform a mini-play, gaining a unique insight into this captivating art form while conversing with Cengiz over Turkish tea and cookies.

This experience offers a rare opportunity to meet an authentic and treasured hayalî, a master of Turkish shadow puppetry, who has been preserving and promoting this ancient art for decades. First of all, we will meet with the attendees at our puppet museum located in, Faikpaşa Caddesi which is full of old buildings, antique and creative stores. We will make a small tour for the collection we have in the puppet museum from all over the world. After the small tour, we will have local tea and cookies with the attendees. We will start to explain the written history that we have from the beginning 16th century: how Karagöz traveled, how he expanded and how he lives today.  
Then we will get our tools to experience the process of making: 
- Deciding which part of Karagöz will be made, 
- shaping the camel leather with special tools(cutting, carving, piercing) 
- Painting the figure
(Tips of shaping the leather will be shared.)
Finally, with a full figure, all attendees see and experience of acting the figure on a shadow theatre curtain.

Spain

A sensory-rich journey through three of Barcelona's most iconic markets: Sant Antoni, La Boqueria, and Santa Caterina. You’ll begin at Sant Antoni Market, a hub of local produce and diverse culinary offerings, notable for its unique creation from the merger of three markets. Here, you'll encounter an array of local products and the warm hospitality of the vendors. Next, you’ll visit the world-renowned La Boquería, near La Rambla, famous for its exotic fruits, freshly cured meats, and seafood display. You’ll continue to Santa Caterina Market in the historic El Born neighborhood, celebrated for being the city's first covered market and built on the ancient ruins of the Santa Caterina monastery. It's a treasure trove of artisanal and fresh produce, showcasing the essence of local Spanish cuisine. You’ll meet at least one artisan for a more personal exchange. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of how regional styles and indigenous influences shape Mexican craft today. The tour ends with a stop at Taquería Miranda, a beloved spot known for its simple, perfectly made tacos. After the tour, you’ll receive a curated digital photo gallery to remember it all.

La Ciudadela is a living archive of Mexican craftsmanship. Your host, Marie, knows the space well and will guide you through its busiest corners with context and care. This is a walking tour that explores how Barcelona city planning is shaping the future of urban living. Although Barcelona is renowned for its historical architecture, it is certainly not a museum. The transformation of Barcelona into a ‘smart city’ is best exemplified in the 22@/Poblenou neighborhood. This area features urban landscaping, bold new civic structures and museums, and cutting-edge projects from top local and international architects, together forming a futuristic cityscape. We meet at the largest purpose-built design museum in the world and start our journey from there. While exploring the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and all the other standing monuments, you’ll also uncover what no longer stands: the Frankish Tower, the Ottoman village, the mosque, the Haseki Wall, and other lost fortifications. These structures weren’t just casualties of time; they were deliberately removed to align with a national narrative shaped after the modern state’s foundation.

Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

The perfect way to view the red pumice layers of Santorini is to walk from Oia to Ammoudi. Just 214 steps down, the going down part was easy since the reward is a meal at one of Ammoudi’s legendary fish tavernas by the sea.

We buy fresh seafood by weight - the classic order of octopus and calamari along with some fish -  and it’s grilled right then and there. The sights and smells of the sea are so familiar and similar - whether in this hidden Santorini cove or at home in San Francisco.

The walk back up to Oia is challenging on a more than full stomach. As we reach the top, we see the setting sun and that makes it all worthwhile.

Each year, over 2 million wildebeest, zebras and antelope migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya in search of water and fresh grazing . Experiencing this during July-October is an absolute spectacle.

The Mara Triangle is particularly great for watching river crossings in August and September - perilous for the animals as the river is packed with wily Nile crocodiles.

We stay with this herd of zebras for 3 days - waiting for them to decide to cross. It’s a matter of life and death for them - so they are understandably cautious  The zebra get to the banks more than 20 times, giving up at the very last minute, often spooked by a territorial hippo or a sneaky crocodile.

Finally, a brave zebra leaps forward into the water. And a second one follows fast. Suddenly it’s mayhem with hundreds of zebras and wildebeest splashing into the river.
