Mexico

Just outside Oaxaca city is a community called San Andres Huayapam, that is famed as the birthplace of tejate. This thoughtfully curated experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with this tradition firsthand. You’ll explore the area where it was founded, peruse local murals, plus meet a traditional tejatera who will explain the process, ingredients and the history of this nutritious drink.

This pre-Hispanic libation was used in sowing and harvesting ceremonies and also consumed by Zapotec kings. It’s made from corn, cacao, flor de rosita, toasted mamey pits, and water in a massive clay pot. It’s traditionally served in a painted bowl known as a jícara.

We’ll then enjoy fresh tejate and a snack with this tejatera in her home. Finally, we’ll walk to a restaurant for a set sampler meal of traditional delicacies. This venue is located in the courtyard of another local family home, and sits under a canopy of branches, which are key to producing the blooms in the tejate process.

While the host has lived in Oaxaca for a decade, five of those years have been spent in this Zapotec community. Here, she has forged meaningful connections with locals and can speak to how the town voluntarily operates under Indigenous usos y costumbres law, as well as the annual tejate festival. That said, the specifics of this tradition will be shared by an expert local who has inherited her skills from a long line of tejate makers.

Located roughly 20 minutes from Oaxaca de Juárez, this scenic pueblo offers a glimpse of traditional village life—locals working the fields, burros carrying firewood, and adobe makers crafting custom earthen bricks. Essaouira is visually rich. For centuries, its economy centered on murex, a sea snail that produced a deep purple-blue dye. As Julieta will tell you, part of the fun is choosing together.

Once at Julieta's home, you will partake in Argentina’s most iconic gathering: the family asado. Previa comes first— where drinks, snacks, and conversation are shared as music plays. Together, you will prepare the meat, chop the veggies, and sip wine while the embers do their thing. And after that? You will take it easy over the sacred ritual of sobremesa concluding with coffee, Fernet, and a homemade dessert. This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Valencia, Spain, is home to Malvarrosa Beach, the city’s most famous urban beach, known for its golden sands, lively promenade, and refreshing Mediterranean waters. Located just a short distance from the city center, this wide and well-maintained beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying fresh seafood at the many restaurants along the shore. With its easy access, vibrant atmosphere, and stunning sunsets, Malvarrosa Beach offers a perfect seaside escape without leaving the city.


1. The long stretch of golden sand, lined with palm trees, provides plenty of space for sunbathing, beach games, and leisurely walks along the shore.

2. The Paseo Marítimo promenade, running parallel to the beach, is perfect for a scenic stroll, bike ride, or enjoying a meal at one of the many beachfront restaurants.

3. The calm Mediterranean waters make it an ideal spot for swimming, paddleboarding, and other water sports, with rental shops nearby.

4. Beachfront restaurants and chiringuitos serve authentic Valencian paella and fresh seafood, offering a delicious taste of the region’s cuisine with a sea view.

5. The stunning sunsets over the Mediterranean make Malvarrosa Beach a fantastic spot for photography, especially in the evening when the sky glows with warm colors.

Malvarrosa Beach

Faroe Islands

None of my map apps seem to work. After years of relying on a mechanical voice to navigate me in strange lands, I am back to poring over paper and asking for directions. I actually like driving here! 

Except when negotiating a one-lane tunnel. Then I am terrified! Unless I have right of way, I have to duck in - at just the right moment - into one of the spaces marked M, and stay there till the dark tunnel ahead is clear of oncoming headlights. This game needs nerves of steel! There are two such tunnels to get to Gásadalur, the waterfall that tumbles recklessly into the ocean.

The best photos require descending down the cliff to the beach below. There is a helpful set of concrete steps, and a big signboard in Faroese that can only be a warning, since it has a lot of exclamation marks. 

I hold on for dear life to the wobbly rusted handrail and descend half way before I realize that the rail isn’t connected to the cliff wall! The view, however, is just perfect.

Tumbling Recklessly

Australia

Kakadu National Park is half the size of Switzerland and a real adventure. If you rent a car, you could drive along the road for weeks, camping in different places and experiencing nature in a way you can't anywhere else.

After leaving Darwin in a rented 4x4 jeep, we made the long drive to Kakadu National Park. Take plenty of drinks and snacks with you, as there aren't many stops on the road. Along the way, we visited several refreshing waterholes and waterfalls, had an open-air barbecue, and saw many birds, snakes, anthills, and farmland along the way.

At night we mostly stayed at campsites that provided tents, and the beauty of the night is incomparable. You can hear, smell, and see countless species of animals, from alligators swimming in lakes at night to dingoes howling, to weirdly chirping insects.

We hiked to a hidden waterfall and discovered some hundreds-of-years-old wooden paintings done by the ancestors of Australia's indigenous people. A must-see in Australia for sure!

Camping: Kakadu National Park

Rising from the desert plains like a vision from another time, Aït Benhaddou is one of Morocco’s most iconic and well-preserved ksars (fortified villages). Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stunning earthen settlement along the former trans-Saharan trade route has been a backdrop for countless films and TV series, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. With its towering mudbrick kasbahs, labyrinthine alleys, and breathtaking mountain views, Aït Benhaddou is a must-visit for history lovers, photographers, and culture enthusiasts.

1. A walk through the ancient ksar winds past traditional mudbrick homes, narrow alleyways, and merchant stalls, offering a glimpse into centuries-old Moroccan architecture and way of life.

2. A steep climb to the granary at the top rewards visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding desert and the winding Ounila River, making it a perfect spot for photography.

3. A visit to a family home inside the ksar provides an intimate look at how locals maintain and preserve these historic structures, keeping Berber traditions alive.

4. A crossing over the shallow river on foot or by donkey adds to the adventure, especially in spring when the water level rises and the kasbah reflects beautifully in the water.

5. A golden-hour glow at sunset bathes the mudbrick walls in warm hues, creating an unforgettable scene that makes Aït Benhaddou one of the most photogenic spots in Morocco.

Tips for Visiting
The best time to visit is spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) for pleasant temperatures. Arriving early in the morning or late in the afternoon helps avoid crowds and offers the best lighting for photos. Wearing sturdy shoes is recommended for climbing the steep paths. Bringing cash is useful for small entry fees, souvenirs, and local cafés, as card payments are rarely accepted.

Located in the heart of Istanbul’s historic peninsula, Sultanahmet Park offers one of the city’s most iconic and photogenic settings. Nestled between two architectural giants—the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque—the park serves as both a peaceful resting place and a central point for exploring the city’s rich Byzantine and Ottoman heritage. With its symmetrical fountains, tree-lined paths, and flower beds that change with the seasons, the park offers locals and travelers alike a moment of calm surrounded by centuries of history.

1. In the center of Sultanahmet Park, a circular fountain draws visitors toward stunning panoramic views of both the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, especially magical at sunrise or twilight.

Buenos Aires, Argentina, is home to Plaza de Mayo, the city’s most historic and politically significant square, surrounded by iconic landmarks, including the Casa Rosada (Pink House), the seat of the Argentine government. This square has been the stage for revolutions, protests, and celebrations since Argentina’s independence. With its grand colonial architecture, historic monuments, and deep political symbolism, Plaza de Mayo is a must-visit for history lovers and photographers alike.


1. Casa Rosada, the iconic pink presidential palace, famous for its balcony, where Eva Perón (Evita) once addressed the nation.

2. The May Pyramid (Pirámide de Mayo), a symbol of Argentina’s independence, erected in 1811 and the oldest national monument in Buenos Aires.

Castelsardo, perched on a rocky promontory on Sardinia’s northern coast, is one of the island’s most picturesque medieval towns. With its stunning views of the Gulf of Asinara, cobblestone streets, and rich history, Castelsardo offers a perfect blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty. Its well-preserved castle, charming old town, and artisan traditions make it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Sardinia. 
1. The Doria Castle, dating back to the 12th century, dominates the town and offers panoramic views of the sea and surrounding countryside. Inside, the Museum of Mediterranean Weaving showcases traditional Sardinian basketry.

Castelsardo

The Chora Church, now the Kariye Mosque, is a breathtaking testament to Byzantine artistry and architecture, tucked away in the quiet Edirnekapı neighborhood of Istanbul. Siurana is a stunning medieval village perched atop a cliff in Catalonia, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. This tiny village is a haven for history buffs, climbers, and anyone seeking a serene escape.
1. The narrow cobblestone streets and stone buildings retain the village’s medieval charm.
2. Views from the cliffside are breathtaking, overlooking the Siurana Reservoir.

Medieval Village of Siurana

Casa Pilatos is one of our favorite places in Seville. Nestled in the historic Santa Cruz district, it’s a paragon of Andalusian architecture, blending Gothic, Mudéjar, and Renaissance styles into a stunning palatial residence. It’s a 16th-century edifice that serves as a living museum, showcasing the grandeur of Sevillian nobility. Today, it remains a semi-private residence, partly inhabited by the 18th Duchess of Medinaceli and her family. Here are the Top things to check out:
1. Enter through a Renaissance-style marble gate to discover a courtyard adorned with a collection of busts from Roman emperors to Spanish kings, set against the backdrop of exquisite azulejo tiles.
