This is a rare opportunity to learn about the ancient cultural significance and rich history of candle making in an Indigenous Zapotec community. You'll experience the creative process of a master artisan who is at the heart of reviving this traditional art form in this community. 

You'll learn how these intricate works are made and even try your hand at beeswax flower making. A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You'll also discover how these candles have long played a key role in marriage proposals and other local traditions in this village.

Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

With its whitewashed buildings, blue-shuttered windows, and maze of cobbled streets, the medina offers an unforgettable experience for culture lovers, shoppers, and photographers alike.

Essaouira Medina

Australia

Kakadu National Park is half the size of Switzerland and a real adventure. If you rent a car, you could drive along the road for weeks, camping in different places and experiencing nature in a way you can't anywhere else.

After leaving Darwin in a rented 4x4 jeep, we made the long drive to Kakadu National Park. Take plenty of drinks and snacks with you, as there aren't many stops on the road. Along the way, we visited several refreshing waterholes and waterfalls, had an open-air barbecue, and saw many birds, snakes, anthills, and farmland along the way.

At night we mostly stayed at campsites that provided tents, and the beauty of the night is incomparable. You can hear, smell, and see countless species of animals, from alligators swimming in lakes at night to dingoes howling, to weirdly chirping insects.

We hiked to a hidden waterfall and discovered some hundreds-of-years-old wooden paintings done by the ancestors of Australia's indigenous people. A must-see in Australia for sure!

Greece

Nafplio, Greece, is home to the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation Museum, one of the most renowned museums dedicated to preserving and showcasing Greek folk art, culture, and traditions. Founded in 1974 by Ioanna Papantoniou, a celebrated stage and costume designer, the museum has won the European Museum of the Year Award and features a rich collection of traditional costumes, textiles, tools, and everyday objects from across the Peloponnese. Housed in a beautiful neoclassical building, this museum offers an immersive journey through Greece’s rich cultural heritage.

1. The museum’s extensive collection of traditional Greek costumes, including intricate embroidery and elaborate jewelry, highlights the craftsmanship and regional diversity of Peloponnesian dress.

Peloponnesian Folklore Museum

If you want to explore Spain on foot, you should definitely set out on one of the pilgrimage routes through the country. All routes lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which is located in the northwest. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino de Santiago has been named a central point of cultural exchange – and a historical highlight that shows what medieval Spain looked like. We chose to follow the famous Camino Frances. The original 800km route takes 5 weeks, but we decided to get in a little later, we only had 11 days, and opted for the route starting in the Galician town of Sarria. Along the way, you'll meet many other tourist pilgrims, but you'll also be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and taste Spain's best delicacies (tapas, seafood, and Spanish Serrano ham). Be prepared for a lot of walking – and take the best walking boots you have. We’ve enjoyed every minute, but some people we met had the wrong equipment, complaining about blisters.

The “French” pilgrimage route

Cefalù, a charming coastal town on the northern coast of Sicily, Italy, is a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. With its roots dating back to the 4th century BC, Cefalù has evolved into one of Sicily's most picturesque destinations. The town is nestled between the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea and the towering La Rocca, a massive limestone cliff that dominates the skyline. Known for its medieval streets, stunning Norman architecture, and golden beaches, Cefalù offers a perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

Explore Cefalu

Portugal’s Almendres Cromlech, located near Évora in the Alentejo region, is one of the largest and oldest megalithic sites in Europe. Dating back over 7,000 years, this Neolithic stone circle predates Stonehenge and offers a fascinating glimpse into Portugal’s prehistoric past. Surrounded by rolling hills and cork oak forests, this mystical site remains a place of intrigue, believed to have been used for astronomical observations, rituals, and social gatherings.


1. Nearly 100 standing stones, arranged in elliptical and circular formations, some engraved with ancient symbols and carvings.

2. Stunning natural setting, with the Alentejo countryside providing a peaceful and remote atmosphere, ideal for quiet reflection and photography.

Almendres Cromlech

Visiting the salt pans in Olhão during summer offers a unique and scenic experience, revealing a centuries-old tradition that continues to shape the Algarve’s landscape and economy. Located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, these shimmering salt flats provide a fascinating look into the artisanal process of salt production and offer an ideal setting for observing wildlife. 

1. The salt pans are particularly striking in summer when the intense sun aids the natural evaporation process, leaving behind gleaming white salt crystals. Walking along the paths, you’ll see salt workers skillfully raking and collecting salt, a practice that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

2. These salt flats are a sanctuary for birdlife, with flamingos, storks, and avocets frequently spotted wading through the shallow pools. Summer brings an abundance of bird species to the area, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and photographers. 

3. Fleur de sel, or “flower of salt,” is one of the premium products harvested here. Known for its delicate flavor and purity, it’s collected from the surface of the salt pans and is a favorite among chefs and food enthusiasts. Many local shops in Olhão sell this prized salt, the perfect souvenir. 

4. Guided tours of the salt pans provide an informative perspective on the history and environmental significance of salt production in the Algarve. Many tours include a tasting, allowing you to sample the distinct flavors of different salt varieties while learning about the region’s sustainable practices.

5. The Ria Formosa landscape surrounding the salt pans is beautiful in summer, with contrasting shades of blue water, white salt mounds, and vibrant greenery. The tranquil setting invites relaxation and reflection.

Bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water, as the summer sun can be intense. Comfortable walking shoes and a camera are also essential to fully enjoy this unique and photogenic landscape.

Summer Visit: Olhão Salt Pans

Chile

Chile’s Laguna Cejar, located in the heart of the Atacama Desert, is a stunning saltwater lagoon where visitors can experience the unique sensation of floating effortlessly due to its high salt concentration, similar to the Dead Sea. Situated about 20 km (12 miles) from San Pedro de Atacama, this turquoise lagoon, surrounded by a stark white salt crust and the majestic Andes Mountains, offers an unforgettable natural experience and breathtaking photography opportunities.

1. Float effortlessly in the lagoon’s mineral-rich waters, known for their extreme buoyancy due to a salt concentration of over 40%.

2. Stunning color contrasts between the deep blue water, the white salt deposits, and the golden desert create a perfect setting for photography.

3. Views of the Licancabur Volcano and the Andes, especially during sunset, make this an unforgettable desert landscape.

Antalya, Turkey, is home to the Kurşunlu Waterfall Nature Park, a hidden gem nestled within a lush pine forest just 20 km (12 miles) from the city center. This enchanting natural retreat features a cascading waterfall, turquoise pools, and scenic walking trails, making it a perfect escape for nature lovers and photographers. With its tranquil atmosphere, rich wildlife, and shaded picnic areas, Kurşunlu Waterfall is an ideal spot for a relaxing break from Antalya’s bustling coastline.

1. The main waterfall, cascading from 18 meters (59 feet) into an emerald-green lagoon, creates a stunning photo opportunity and a peaceful ambiance.

2. Scenic walking trails wind through the park, leading visitors past smaller waterfalls, wooden bridges, and hidden caves.

The Triana neighborhood in Seville is a vibrant and culturally rich district that feels like a city within a city. Located across the Guadalquivir River, just a short walk from the historic center, Triana has long been known for its strong ties to Seville’s ceramic artistry and flamenco culture. Strolling through its colorful streets, you’ll discover centuries-old pottery traditions, lively taverns, and a deep sense of community that makes it one of the most authentic parts of Seville.

Highlights of Exploring Triana:

The Spanish Steps, gracefully ascending from Piazza di Spagna to Trinità dei Monti church, are a cultural symbol of Rome. Renowned for their elegant design and vibrant atmosphere, the steps offer a unique blend of architectural beauty, historical significance, and urban charm. Top 5 things to look for:

The church’s interior, though less ornate than other Roman churches, exudes a peaceful charm, complementing the lively atmosphere of the steps.
