What is this?
Holy Week in Málaga is one of the city’s most revered traditions. Each year, the streets become a living stage for devotion, history and collective memory. Over the course of the week, approximately 45 formal processions organized by over forty brotherhoods (cofradías) move through Málaga’s historic center, carrying lifelike wooden sculptures of Christ and the Virgin Mary.
This experience offers an intimate vantage point from a private balcony overlooking the processional route, allowing guests to observe the processions below while immersing themselves in the music and pageantry. Accompanied by a knowledgeable local ambassador, guests gain insight into the origins, symbolism and social meaning of Semana Santa—from the choreography of the processions to the role of faith in contemporary Málaga. Lasting approximately 60 minutes, the experience combines close observation with cultural context.
THIS ANNUAL EXPERIENCE NEXT TAKES PLACE MAR 29–APR 5, 2026, WITH LIMITED DAILY AVAILABILITY.
What makes this unique?
Semana Santa in Málaga is distinguished by the scale of its processions through the city’s narrow streets. Here, the floats—known locally as tronos—are monumental platforms bearing sculpted scenes of the Passion of Jesus Christ and images of the Virgin Mary. The tradition of carrying tronos in Málaga spans centuries. These tronos are carried by teams of hombres de trono, men who undergo extensive training to bear extraordinary weight.
From a private balcony on Calle Larios, guests witness the physical and emotional intensity of the procession at close range: the synchronized movement of the hombres de trono, the cadence of drums, and the slow advance shaped by discipline and faith. Nazarenos, dressed in robes and pointed hoods, accompany the tronos—symbols of repentance and humility rooted in medieval tradition.
In the event of rain, the experience takes place inside some of Málaga’s most significant churches, offering rare access to the sacred spaces where these floats are housed.
What is the profile of the host?
The knowledgeable and enthusiastic host is a passionate local Malagueño with a deep connection to Semana Santa. With years of growing up and observing the festival with their family, they are well-versed in the traditions of this celebration and will guide you through it in a respectful manner. Reyes will share details and introduce you to the host closer to the event.
What to bring?
Dressing appropriately is key. Locals take this celebration seriously and dressing up is a sign of respect. We suggest opting for black, elegant attire. On Thursdays, women can opt to wear a mantilla.
*Note: If you wish to witness more processions, we recommend booking two experiences at adjacent timings on the same day. Alternatively, if you're staying in Malaga for multiple days during Holy Week, consider booking experiences on different days for a fuller immersion into the festivities.
