M’Angel Manovell

What is this?

When the Guggenheim Museum opened in Bilbao in 1997, it transformed the city—turning it into an international destination in a way few could have predicted. While its legacy is debated, its impact is impossible to ignore, as are its world-class permanent and temporary exhibitions. Designed by Frank Gehry and clad in titanium, the building became a global icon of 21st-century architecture. On this walking tour through Bilbao, your host, an expert in art and Basque culture who was involved in the city's urban regeneration project, will talk you through how Bilbao has changed in the past 30 years and the impact the Guggenheim has had on both the city and the arts. After understanding the context and enjoying a drink and a selection of pintxos at a hand-picked establishment in the city center, your host will take you on a private guided tour through the museum itself. Inside, you'll learn more about the building's architectural context and explore its temporary and permanent exhibitions.

What makes this unique?

The Guggenheim Museum is an iconic building and an essential stop for anyone visiting Bilbao. In fact, it may be the reason you're going there in the first place. In this private art tour, your host—a local and cultural expert—will put the museum in context with the region and with contemporary art, informed by her professional background. You'll learn how Bilbao was reimagined as a city oriented around this new form of urban design. Opened in 1997, the museum played a pivotal role in Bilbao’s economic revival, now known globally as the “Guggenheim effect.” Once inside, you'll be guided through one of the world's most important collections of contemporary art, covering movements from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art and Conceptual Art, with names such as Fujiko Nakaya and Jeff Koons, as well as a range of Basque artists including Eduardo Chillida. At the end of the experience, you're welcome to remain in the museum if you'd like more time to browse the exhibitions.
