Wine Tasting in Lisbon exploring the secrets of Port Wine and a rare bottle-opening ritual.

What is this?

Join a certified Port Wine Educator in her Lisbon home for a private tasting dedicated entirely to Portugal’s iconic fortified wine. You’ll explore the centuries-old legacy of the Douro Valley — one of the world’s first officially demarcated wine regions — and dive into the key styles of Port, from crisp whites to rich rubies and tawnies alongside local cheese and chocolates. Along the way, you’ll learn the essentials of Port production, from fermentation techniques to aging processes. The experience also offers a rare glimpse into the ceremonial side of Port culture, including a dramatic demonstration of opening a Vintage Port bottle using traditional heated tongs — a ritual usually reserved for special occasions. You’ll leave with the confidence to choose, store, and serve Port wine at home, and with the know-how to create your own perfectly paired Port-themed evening. Book early in your stay to enjoy what you learn while dining out during the rest of your time in Portugal.

What makes this unique?

Unlike standard Port tastings, this is an intimate, ceremonial experience led by Teresa — an award-winning sommelier and Certified Port Educator — inside her Lisbon home. Dressed in the formal attire of the Port Wine Brotherhood, she welcomes you with a Port & Tonic and sets the stage for an exploration rarely seen in the capital. Port isn’t produced in Lisbon, which makes this experience particularly special: thanks to Teresa’s direct ties to the Douro and access to rare bottles, you’re able to engage with centuries-old traditions without leaving the city. You’ll taste and compare the three key styles — White, Ruby, and Tawny — while learning their profiles, aging methods, and ideal pairings. The highlight is the opening of a Vintage Port using red-hot tongs, a piece of winemaking heritage usually reserved for Brotherhood ceremonies and collectors. Best of all, the Vintage Port you open is yours to take home — a rare and personal piece of the Douro, right in the heart of Lisbon.

What is the profile of the host?

With years of hands-on experience and deep regional connections, she offers rare access to traditions and rituals typically seen only in the Douro Valley. Fluent in both Portuguese and English, she creates a relaxing atmosphere free of pretension, making even the most complex aspects of Port approachable to everyone.
