What is this?
This is an invitation to immerse yourself in the daily life of a schist village nestled in the Lousã mountains in central Portugal, where community, nature, and tradition are deeply intertwined. Departing from Lisbon or Porto, you'll drive towards Aigra Nova. Here you’ll be welcomed by locals who invite you to live as they do—walking ancient trails, preparing meals in wood-fired kitchens, and celebrating the rhythms of the seasons. You'll join a guided nature walk, witness the village’s relationship with the land, and experience a hands-on cooking session—a moment of cultural transmission. Depending on the season, you may help distill "Água-ardente" in a traditional copper alambique during the Waterfire ritual, or share roasted chestnuts and homemade jeropiga under autumn skies. You'll become a welcomed guest in the community and contribute to the village’s living heritage through shared moments, stories, and hands-on traditions.
What makes this unique?
This is a community-powered experience rooted in authenticity. Each element of this tour is designed in collaboration with local residents and their association, ensuring mutual benefit and cultural respect. You’ll prepare food in villagers’ homes, walk with those who are deeply familiar with the surrounding mountain trails, and take part in rituals passed down through generations. Seasonal activities—like the distillation of spirits or fireside autumn celebrations—aren’t scheduled performances but real community events you're invited to join. Through direct exchange with artisans, farmers, and cooks, you’ll gain insight into the village's sustainable rural life and the resilience of mountain culture. The village adapts to nature’s pace, and so does this experience, meaning no two visits are ever the same. It's a genuine invitation to connect, learn, and celebrate mountain life with the people who keep its traditions alive.
