What is this?
This private, exclusive evening unfolds entirely within the Palácio de Mateus — an iconic 18th century Baroque estate completed in 1743 and designated a National Monument in 1910. After public hours, you’ll enter through the main gate, when the palace and reflective pond lie silent. A senior guide from the Casa de Mateus Foundation will lead you through the most emblematic rooms including intricately carved chestnut wood salons, private chapel, 16th century winery, and formal gardens shaped over centuries.
Then, in a reserved dining salon, a dedicated chef prepares a five course tasting menu rooted in the Douro’s heritage. Each dish highlights regional DOP ingredients, paired with Lavradores de Feitoria wines — the palace’s own brand, named after the 2000 cooperative project it helped launch. With no other guests, this is a private celebration among national treasures. Ideal for marking a milestone — an anniversary, proposal, or significant birthday.
What makes this unique?
This is a curated evening of rarity and intimacy. Your visit begins after the palace is closed to the public, and the façade is quietly illuminated. It’s a rare privilege of access. A Foundation specialist guide opens rooms – some of which are normally off limits, sharing insights into this Baroque masterpiece by Nicolau Nasoni, the family’s lineage, and the palace’s cultural significance. At night, the estate takes on a stillness once reserved for the family themselves — quiet, romantic, and uninterrupted.
Dinner follows in a historic salon, with table set just for you. Between courses, you may wander and take photos, revisit favorite paintings, or step into the garden under the stars. The private chef and sommelier attend solely to your table, pairing each course with wines that trace Douro’s diversity.
The format— after-hours palace access, private salon dining, full estate immersion — creates an evening of exclusive elegance.
What is the profile of the host?
Your evening is hosted by Carlos de Oliveira and Paulo Baptista — known for their thoughtful hospitality in the Douro. They’ll welcome you, facilitate logistics, and ensure seamless pacing throughout the night.
Inside the palace, a Foundation specialist guide (fluent in English, French, and German) offers private access to archive rooms, explains Nasoni’s architectural vision, and reveals stories seldom shared with public audiences. A private chef, dedicated solely to your table, crafts and serves each course with regional wine pairings — creating a celebration shaped entirely around you.
