What is this?

This tour offers a 3-hour immersive experience into the traditional crafts of Algarve, centered around the charming village of Alte. For centuries in the Algarve, people learned to use local natural resources to produce useful objects mostly for farming. Some of these people are keeping their traditions alive. In this tour, you will meet some of them. Recognized as one of Algarve’s most traditional villages, Alte's cultural tapestry is woven through its artisans. You’ll explore small, picturesque rural villages and meet with local craftspeople specializing in woodwork, cane, and vegetable fibers. You’ll see their dedication and skill in transforming natural materials into artistic and functional objects. Key Stops: (1) Artisan Workshops: Interact with local craftsmen and observe their intricate work. (2) Alte Village: Wander through the scenic village, known for its traditional charm. (3) Traditional Cake Tasting: Savor the sweet flavors of Algarve at a local bakery.

What makes this unique?

This social impact experience is a deep dive into the heart of Algarve’s traditional crafts, preserved and practiced with care by local artisans. It's important to acknowledge that some of these crafts are at risk of extinction. The Algarve Handicraft Activities Red Book identifies several crafts, including cane basketry, that require urgent safeguarding measures. This highlights the significance of preserving these crafts and passing skills on to younger generations. The tour includes a pleasant stroll through Alte village, culminating in a delightful tasting of traditional cake. Each stop on this tour is a testament to the region's rich heritage – and a reflection of João Ministro and his team’s work in finding and supporting these amazing artisans. Some of the special artisans you will meet: Three women who restored an abandoned primary school into a wood workshop. A man who transforms olive wood pieces into objects. A couple who crafts musical instruments and toys from vegetable
