What is this?
In Essaouira, this private 4-hour experience draws you into Morocco’s living jewelry traditions. You’ll meet two master artisans, each preserving distinct jewelry techniques passed down through generations, and end the tour with a visit to a gallery showcasing handcrafted jewelry.
Begin with a visit to a Berber Mâalem (master) silversmith specializing in Deg Souiri filigree—a delicate, lace-like silverwork unique to the region. As one of the last practitioners of this ancestral art, he’ll demonstrate how fine silver threads are twisted and soldered into intricate designs, reflecting Essaouira’s rich blend of Berber, Jewish, and Andalusian heritage.
Next, you'll meet a craftsman renowned for his work with brass and semi-precious stones. Over Moroccan tea and pastries, you’ll learn the meaning behind gemstones and observe the careful techniques used to shape and embellish brass jewelry. You can even craft a simple brass ring—an opportunity to connect directly with the making process.
What makes this unique?
This experience offers rare, behind-the-scenes access to two of Essaouira’s master artisans—each representing a different, culturally significant tradition in Moroccan jewelry-making. From the near-extinct Deg Souiri filigree demonstrated by one of its last remaining practitioners, to the detailed artistry of brass and gemstone work, you'll experience jewelry as heritage.
You’ll sit with the makers in their working studios, learn how raw silver is transformed into lace-like designs, how stones are selected for meaning as well as beauty, and how generations have shaped these traditions.
This is an exploration of materials, techniques, and meaning—rooted in real conversation, and seeing the full creative arc—from first coil to final polish. And it concludes with a visit to a high-end gallery that represents Essaouira’s cultural richness of jewelry craftsmanship, which provides context into the wider ecosystem of culture and craft. You're assured of craftsmanship, not commercialism.
