What is this?
Explore life above the Blue City on this full-day trip into Chefchaouen’s surrounding mountains. Your day begins at the Spanish Mosque, then set out for a 3-hour hike through peaceful trails at the edge of the Rif Mountains. The walk leads to Mustafa’s family’s farmhouse, which offers sweeping views of the city below.
Here, you’ll learn how the family lives off the land — growing vegetables, baking bread in a clay oven, collecting spring water, and maintaining traditional farming practices. After accompanying their routines, you’ll share a homemade meal, hearing stories from three different generations. As the day winds down, watch the sun set over Chefchaouen’s blue rooftops, then witness the hills slowly shift into night, lit by the soft, golden glow of the city below.
This experience is ideal for those seeking a deeper understanding of Morocco’s rural mountain life, offering a glimpse into daily traditions and landscapes just beyond the city’s edge.
What makes this unique?
While many visit Chefchaouen for its blue-painted walls and iconic photos, few step beyond the city to understand who lives here and how. This experience offers a rare chance to see what’s beyond that postcard image. Standing above the mountains, you’ll gain an entirely different perspective on the landscape and the people who have lived here for generations.
Mustafa and his family open their home in a way few travelers ever experience. You’ll engage directly with them, ask questions, and take part in the daily practices that support their self-sufficient way of life—growing food, baking Beldi bread, and collecting water. Mustafa’s wife will prepare a homemade meal for you using locally harvested ingredients to showcase the region’s diverse culinary traditions. More than a guest, you’ll feel like a true member of a Moroccan family taking part in their routines and embracing their slow-paced lifestyle, leaving you with memories far deeper than any photo.
What is the profile of the host?
Mustafa and his wife, Oum Kalthoum, are lifelong residents of the Chefchaouen region, dedicated to preserving and sharing their rural heritage. They welcome guests into their home as family. Mustafa brings deep knowledge of the land and its stories, while Oum Kalthoum creates a calm, inviting space where visitors feel instantly at ease. Her cooking reflects the soul of the region, relying on seasonal ingredients and recipes that have been in her family for generations. Together, they offer more than a glimpse into Moroccan village life—they invite you to be part of it, if only for a day.
What to bring?
Comfortable shoes for hiking, a sunhat and sunscreen, a bottle of water and a light jacket for the evening.
