What is this?
Mercado de Jamaica is Mexico City’s iconic specialty flower market—it's part flower haven, part neighborhood lifeline. It pulses with activity: 1,150 stalls overflowing with marigolds, eucalyptus, roses, herbs—alongside food vendors, fruit stands, and spice sellers. It’s a full-sensory collision of color, culture, and daily life.
On this private, curator-led tour, you’ll explore it with one of the city’s most respected florists. Along the way, you’ll uncover the cultural roots of native plants like cempasúchil, used for centuries to guide ancestors during Día de Muertos, and terciopelo, linked to rituals of love and mourning. You’ll learn how floral traditions have evolved—and how sustainable floristry is reshaping them today.
You’ll visit parts of the market most visitors never see, handle rare plants, and gain inspiration for creating your own arrangements. Beyond the spectacle and scale, this is a sensory deep-dive: you’ll be invited to see, taste, smell, touch and listen.
What makes this unique?
Raquel is a botanical storyteller. As one of Mexico City’s most creative florists, she brings this market to life in a way no guidebook can. She draws inspiration from the mountain landscapes of southern Mexico, blending native flowers like wild poppies, cosmos, and dahlias with aromatic herbs.
Raquel translates, contextualizes, and connects. She shares stories sparked by what catches her eye—how seasonal flowers carry meaning, how the market responds to holidays, what a vendor’s stall reveals about their family’s history. Her deep relationships with vendors—many from families who’ve worked these stalls for generations—grant you access to authentic conversations and corners of Mercado de Jamaica.
You’ll watch florists build arrangements in real time. You’ll taste sun-ripened fruit, smell eucalyptus and rose, and walk away with a deeper understanding of floristry, food, daily life in Mexico City, the families who grow these flowers, and the way this market breathes.
What is the profile of the host?
Raquel is the founder and head designer of Flores Rudas, a floral architecture studio rooted in botanical storytelling. After a decade in Oaxaca de Juárez, she returned to Mexico City to further explore the intersections of botany, ceramics, sustainability, interior design, and contemporary floristry.
With a background in literature, cinema, and research, Raquel brings a uniquely layered perspective to Mexican culture. She’s a published author with deep knowledge of native florals, mezcal, maíz, ceramics, and architecture—treating each as a living expression of mexicanidad. Her work blends intellectual depth with sensory craft, and she’s excited to welcome you into her home city and the world of modern Mexican floristry.
What to bring?
Wear comfortable shoes—you’ll be walking for about 1.5 hours. The market is covered, so rain or sun won’t interrupt the experience. During hotter months, consider bringing extra water to stay cool and hydrated.
