Lee Chapman
What is this?
Join photographer Lee Chapman to explore Tokyo beyond the glitz, where normal Tokyoites live normal lives. Free of tourist-focused attractions, these cities within the city hold their own charm and personalities often linked to their historical origins from over a century ago.
Lee will take you through three or four distinctly different neighborhoods of Western Tokyo, depending on your pace and stamina. In each neighborhood, he'll take you to some hidden highlights and instruct you on how to capture some fleeting moments in these ever-changing environments.
Throughout the walk, Lee will share his deep knowledge of the history of these locations and give you expert tips on photographing them: composition, technique, and waiting for the decisive moment.
Along the way, pop into a small local cafe or coffee shop to enjoy a taste of the small city.
What makes this unique?
Lee has been leading tours of "regular" Tokyo for over a decade, focusing on neighborhoods rarely mentioned in guidebooks or on social media. His amiable personality has helped him make friends with total strangers, a skill that will be on display throughout your time with him.
Lee uses his familiarity with Tokyo to curate a tour through some of Western Tokyo's most interesting neighborhoods. Visit disappearing places like shopping streets, mom-and-pop grocers, and tiny bars , occasionally interacting with local residents and getting them to pose for impromptu street portraits.
If you choose to visit Tokyo for its famous attractions and incredible array of shopping, this tour will help give you a holistic experience of the city from the perspective of local residents, taking home precious photos to remember from your time with Lee.
What is the profile of the host?
Lee Chapman is a freelance photographer, long-term Tokyo resident, and self-described “lover of all things Showa and dated,” whose work has been featured in The Guardian, The Japan Times, and The Economist. Since moving to Japan in 1998, he has focused his lens on the city’s overlooked backstreets, documenting neighborhoods and lives under constant threat from Tokyo’s rapid redevelopment. His images capture the quiet resilience of its older districts, and the human stories embedded in everyday spaces, preserving fleeting moments that reveal both fragility and strength.
As an old Tokyo photowalk guide, Lee’s approach is rooted in patience and respect — he guides travelers into areas far from the glossy image of modern Tokyo, sharing insider knowledge and personal connections built over decades. Each walk is both a lesson in photography and an intimate exploration of a Tokyo that is fast disappearing but not yet forgotten.
