What is this?
This exclusive experience in Athens dives into the hidden and gritty history of Piraeus, exploring its underground life, the rebetiko music scene, and the city’s transformation after the war.
We'll uncover the layers of Piraeus’ rich and often controversial past, from its bustling port life to its red-light district and its role as a melting pot for refugees, sailors, and locals. Participants walk through historical streets, hear stories of the infamous Trouba neighbourhood through the eyes of a witness of those changes.
The journey highlights the origins and significance of rebetiko, a raw and emotional music genre born from hardship and resilience, and performed in secretive venues like tekké taverns. The experience culminates in a traditional-style restaurant where live rebetiko music sets the mood, immersing guests in an authentic atmosphere with food, wine, and storytelling. It’s an unforgettable blend of history, culture, and music.
What makes this unique?
What sets this experience apart is the chance to witness live rebetiko music performed by skilled artists, bringing the soulful repertoire of Piraeus’ tekké taverns to life. Unlike tours where music is pre-recorded or lightly referenced, this journey offers an authentic live performance, paired with traditional cuisine that echoes the hearty, homemade meals once served in underground venues.
This experience also highlights rarely explored facets of Piraeus’ past, reflected in iconic sites. The visit to Trouba isn't just a walk, but a recollection of first-hand experiences of one of our guides who has seen with her own eyes the changes the neighbourhood has undergone.
It’s this seamless blending of storytelling, hidden history, and live cultural performance that makes the experience unforgettable. The juxtaposition of the city's darker history with the raw beauty of its music brings Piraeus' underground culture to life in a way few have experienced.

With a degree in history and a keen interest in the concept of identity, he has spent years exploring how music, migration, and societal shifts shape the narratives of a place. His ability to dig beneath the surface allows guests to truly understand the layers of Piraeus' past, from the bustling port to the gritty streets of Trouba.
