What is this?
This private astro-tourism experience offers a magical night under the stars at 1,660 meters above sea level, where the Andean sky becomes an infinite canvas. The experience lasts three hours and includes the use of a telescope and a comprehensive talk led by an astronomer.
Departing from the small mountain town of Los Andes, Chile—a 90-minute drive from Santiago—the evening begins with a spectacular sunset that bathes the mountains in golden and reddish tones. This moment is accompanied by a glass of local wine and a platter of typical regional snacks.
As the sky darkens, you’ll settle in for a talk about how the ancient Inca and Mapuche cultures interpreted the stars and how astronomy influenced their daily lives. With expert guidance from a local astronomer, you’ll learn to recognize constellations, planets, and other celestial bodies.
What makes this unique?
Chile is home to some of the clearest skies on Earth, making it one of the world’s top destinations for stargazing. This high-altitude location offers over 300 clear nights a year—ideal for stargazing. And in Indigenous cosmology, the stars were not distant lights but active guides that shaped land, time, and ritual.
What truly sets this experience apart is Zachary's expert commentary on the Inca and Mapuche worldview. You’ll learn how these cultures interpreted the stars, shaped their agricultural calendars, and connected spiritually with the universe. It’s not just about seeing the stars, but understanding them from an ancestral perspective.
The evening is also enriched by cultural context and storytelling that frame the sky in both scientific and spiritual terms. The addition of local wine at sunset adds a sensory element that makes the experience even more memorable. Here, history, Indigenous astronomy, and nature come together in a setting that feels both intimate and profound.
